Oswego 8/19
CaptSpike replied to CaptSpike's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
8/22 update. Dropped a fish on our first pass right at the back of the boat. Hook tangled in the net and he shook and straightened it out. Next fish shook free 20' from the boat, it was either a big brown or ho tough to tell in the waves. We then got squeezed in too shallow so we picked up and moved outside. Heading back against the waves the dippy fires and we finally boat one. After landing that fish the boat next to us hooked up and while battling that fish we got pushed out with them and never got back into the "good" water. The we had to wait for tug and tow to enter the harbor before we could head back down wind. That troll produced nothing for us. Wind started to lighten up and we headed back west. Finally hook and landed another fish. Then another. Things were looking up until we saw the radar. Huge storm coming across the lake. We high tailed it out of there. Overall pretty good trip. We have had better trips, but weather wise we got to fish everyday except today so that is a bonus. Started the trip fishing 150' ended fishing as shallow as 90. Seems like a really early run. I do better when the fish are out deeper. When they hit the shallow water I seem to strugle to get them to go. Should I be dragging the mud or what? Oh well, not enough time to figure out all the nuances involved with the lake. Keeps you on your toes. Thanks for letting us enjoy your great fishery, Spike -

Sorry late report. Might have a picture of the ho but can't put it up till I get home. This fishing is consuming my time. We did well last night. To tell the truth I forgot what we finished with. We lost 3 fish then landed the rest. Dusk the lake was on fire. Funniest thing is I was pulling a rigger and at 20 down the release pops and the battle was on. Big king. Must have followed it up and slammed it lol. A first for us. Today we got out later as last night was midnight by the time we ate and shopped. This morning we dropped a fish and landed another ho. It was a while before the next bite but it was a good one. A 10lb steelhead. Followed by a 9lb bow. Then it was king time. We boxed out with a trip high 29lber and released a few more. As we entered wrights we had two salmon jump so they are in the river. Back at it tomorrow. Adk I thought I saw you yesterday but thought you were only up for the weekend. If you see a black Lund sport angler say hi we are here till Friday leaving Saturday Spike -

One the water around 1 first rod down 100 rod pops. I figured the release set wrong. Line starts screaming 27.5 lb king. Long wait for second fish on dipsy out 312 on 3 setting. 26lb king. Then pulling lines last dipsy fire after it was triped and reeling in. Fish lost when fly swivel opened up. No fly when doctor came in. Going hard tomorrow. Spike

Read? Who has time for that, lol. I figured it was just like last yr. Guess that explains the mystery. Thanks for the answers. Spike

Ordered mine 7/16/13 and haven't got it yet. I know the receipt is just as good but I was wondering if anyone else experienced a delay in getting the ticket? Thanks, Spike

I guess the question in general would provide a general answer of freshwater boats would be better if all things were equal. that being said they are not equal. Different owners care for their boats differently. Yes saltwater can have adverse effects on boats and no matter how well you care for them this can happen just to the saltwater enviorment. Same as cars owned by people living on the coats tend to rust faster than cars owned by people that live off the coast. Salt is in the air and salt leads to corrosion. That being said I have seen some really nice older boats that were well taken care of. So this is where the answer is flawed. typically a good saltwater boat owner will wash his boat down after each use with fresh water. Normal maintainence will prevent engine problems (which goes for fresh water boats as well). If you use corrosion guard on exposed surfaces and wiring the adverse effects are delayed. I wouldn't hesitate looking at a saltwater boat, your eyes will know immediately if it was well cared for or not. In 19901 I bought a 25' Sea Ox with 350 hrs on it for 19K. This boat had twin Johnson 150's and sold new for over 50K. The boat had previous engine issues with carbon build up behind the rings (sign that the owner used cheaper grade oil), but I had it checked out prior to purchase and all was well. At that pirce I couldn't go wrong. So you can see how different factors come into play. I fished that boat, putting over 300 hrs per yr, until I had my lobster boat built in 2000. I did have to replace the power heads twice. The first time one engine failed so I figured the other wasn't far behind and replaced both (yup I was using cheaper oil). Second time all the signs were there but I didn't heed them quickly enough and took out the 1 cylinder on one of the engines. At that point I only replaced the one power head. So all issues were not related to salt vs fresh but to a new boat owner that learned a lot for owning boats, as we all do. As far as electronics failing due to salt vs fresh I saw no indication of that in my units. I actually transfered my Sitex FF, radio, loran and radar to the lobsterboat and they were still working on it when I sold it in 2008. On the sea ox I did get resistance build up on the connection at the panel on the dash which drained the battery faster than it normally would. All switches worked but I couldn't anchor up with lights on and electronics running without risking running the battery down. Adding a battery solved the risk but I never got around to cleaning all the connection to solve the problem (there were a lot of connection on that panel, lol). Hope this helped a little. There are a ton of boats out there that are bought new with good intentions and then not used half as much as the owner anticipated. Once they start seeing slip fees, spring and fall service and storage they bail on the boat. That is when you want to pick it up. Good luck in your search and if you don't know your way around a boat a survey is your friend. Looks for references as surveyors are like home inspectors, some are good and some well not so good. Good to know. Thanks for warming them up for us Willy-c. We have been pretty lucky thru the yrs considering blow off's. We have met people who were out all week and only gotten out once before. Never had that happen and hope it doesn't ever happen, but if it's too rough it is always good to have a plan B, unless you want to sit in a bar. Since my bar sitting days are behind me and I'm there to fish then my plan B is to find an alternate lake.LOL. Thought about Onieda for eyes but would like to only bring certain rods and reels too much stuff it becomes a hassle and reeling in smaller fish on king gear isn't too apealing so we head to Cayuga for lakers, landlocks and the other trouts. Bringing Ugly stick light rods this yr so the switch won't be so bad as far as rod class goes. hope it doesn't hurt us boat side handling kings, lol. Should be fun either way. Look for us going the other way on the highway, lol. Spike

Yes it does look good for the weekend. I'll be up mid day Sunday and fishing the week so I need a back up just in case. If you see a 18 Lund Sport angler from NH at Wrights stop by to say hi. We are usually out early and in late but since we arrive mid day Sunday maybe our paths will cross. Spike
-
So it sounds like with a NW or N blow Senneca wouldn't be an option. Guess I'll hit Cayuga again as a plan B. Have done well there in the past. Maybe research Owasco a bit as recommended. Thanks for the info, Spike
-
Heading out to Oswego for kings next week but usually have a plan B if we get blown off. We usually hit Cayuga but I figured this yr to see what other options would be out there. Assuming the wind is NW or N what would be the best finger lakes to hit coming from Oswego? I'd rather not drive to the bottom of a lake to launch to keep out of wind. We have launched out of Deans when blown off from the NW wind and had Cayuga get sloppy once when the wind decided to veer Northrly for a while, lol. Looking at Seneca as an alternative (or other) since it looks like a launch at the north end. Figure with NW wind you could sneak over to the west side and fish down the lake? Not sure which is why I'm looking for some local advice. Thanks in advance, Spike

I probably should have added that my motor is not an older motor, it's a 2008. I believe a lot of the problems are with older engines. I'm sure newer engines run better on non-ethanol too but without general supply it is hard to do. I'll see if I can find where I saw switching back and forth could cause problems. Spike
-
I read you can have problems running ethanol gas and then going back to non-ethanol. Anyone experience problems doing this? I have only had access to ethanol gas and so far using Startron or Seafoam no issues. Spike

I was told yrs ago and I may not be remembering it correctly that the plate was turned if you felt pull in the steering wheel while underway. As for moving the plate be careful not to correct a problem at trolling speed to have another show up at cruising speed. Then again I had an outboard not an I/O so maybe the effects are different???? 2007-2012 is how long my marathons lasted, well one of them anyway. Had complete blow out on the highway which took out the plastic fender and its mount on the trailer. In the morning while towing I thought it felt "different" I should have looked closer as it probably had a sidewall break or something like that. I know better now. As for miles it is hard to say. A couple trips a yr to NY would put about 750 miles per trip and every weekend I put about 180 miles on it. Rough estimate about 7k +/- miles trailering a season. So under 35k before the one failed. Boat was bought new leftover in 2008 so the first yr of the tires was sitting in the marina parking lot. I didn't get the whole 2012 yr out of them as the tire blew last week of June. Like I said probably a bubble sidewall issue that I didn't see. Spike

I bought new last yr and went with Maxis. From all the reviews I read (boat and RV) they seemed to get the nod. I did have marathons on prior to that and they were fine up till last yr. (2007 - 2012). So i can't knock them. One thing I did notice was that some yrs one brand performed great and other yrs not so good. i went with what seemed to have minimal issues posted about them. I gotta tell ya the only requirement I have is to be able to get out and fish. The rest is just frosting on the cake. That lake is great and it sucks when you can't get out so I set my sights on a successful trip if I get the oportunity to get out and fish. As shadster says just go. I look for recent reports to get my blood pumping for when I arrive. Love to see reports. I am on count down now and I can't wait. I also hope the winds are good to us this yr. Spike -
Dipsey depth chart 2nd try
CaptSpike replied to CaptSpike's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
Well that was easier than finding it the first time lol. I'll link the picture page and you can get to the thread from there. I don't usually post links to other forums on forums. I don't think it is frown upon here but I generally do not do it (well except for the fat laker post I linked to, lol). Which is why I didn't say I never post links, lol. Here it is anyway: http://www.google.com/imgres?client=firefox-a&hs=5x0&sa=X&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&channel=fflb&biw=1536&bih=738&tbm=isch&tbnid=bSwu5ln7SPZTxM:&imgrefurl=http://www.spoonpullers.com/index.php%3Ftopic%3D15370.0&docid=L9eaxGGKXr2LJM&imgurl=http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v705/silveradosheriff/Dipsy.jpg&w=451&h=362&ei=9Ff4UeLdCc3B4APp14GwAQ&zoom=1&ved=1t:3588,r:15,s:0,i:126&iact=rc&page=1&tbnh=171&tbnw=214&start=0&ndsp=22&tx=71&ty=77 -
Dipsey depth chart 2nd try
CaptSpike replied to CaptSpike's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
To be honest I don't know. I was cruising fishing sites with Lake Ontario info filling my head with as much info as I can get and came across a thread with a picture posted in it. It might be from a book about trolling Lake Ontario with that kind of information. If I can find the thread I'll post it up. Let me see if I can find it, I promise nothing lol. Spike -
XD with Chamberlain Release
CaptSpike replied to djw13cwru's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
Good points. I wonder if you could just thread the cable thru the wire lead of the Chamberlain and use the snap to hold it in place by running it thru the cable terminating snap. I'll have to check out all options before committing. Spike
