I was in a jam last week and was due to come out and fish alone. I contacted Rod (Fishtails)about jumping on his boat and Tim (Jekyl) about fishing with him. Both had room for me. I ended up fishing with Rod the first day, blown off the second and fished with Tim the other two days. I learned much in my trips and felt comfortable fishing with both guys. This site is great where you can meet other fishermen and help each other out. I only get out that way twice a year and to be able to fish with people on their boats and not solo on my own made for a great trip. Tim also landed a fish to weigh in the LOC. Hopefully it holds for him. I'll have pictures of my trip on my site when I get some free time. Again guys thanks for getting me out and I really appreciate it. Mark CaptSpike

On the coast if there was as much chatter, never mind the language just the chatter on the radio it gets nipped in the bud and fast. Yes there are times a few people get long winded but nothing like on the Lake. I hear more "cell phone" conversations when fishing Lake Ontario than anywhere else. I lost every fish I fought while my buddy landed his. Wednesday we fished sun up to sun down. Had some flurries but couldn't keep a consistent bite when everyone else was catching. Tried everything we had, 80-100 was best depth if you could get into it (lots of boats out). Thursday everything changed temp wise and fish were scattered. We picked thru the day and quit early, 150- in and out as fish were at every depth but not piled up. Friday was another wait for the wind to die day. 5am left the river to 4-5'ers, turned and went back in. Sat at the dock until 9 and went back out. Better, but not great. It was suppose to calm down so we toughed it out. Lost a bunch of fish again. Was very slow mid day but lit up as the sun was going down. 150-100 as the sun went down we moved in. Green dot spinny was our best lure for the trip. Be back next week to fish on a couple other boats. Will likely learn a lot. Twice a year trip makes it hard to figure out when the going gets tough.

Poking around the net I see some good news reports for the east end of Ontario. Is this site just a little behind the news scoop or is it kept hush hush? heading out next week I hope it is true and not just rumours...... Spike

Thanks for the replies. I don't usually stack out on Ontario because it is usually just me and 1 other. Home or Champlain I stack often with only two riggers. I stack both riggers and run two core rods. Just looking for other stacker options. I like the mono tag end idea. I'll have to try that out. Spike

The boats should add some self installed security. We call them Sabaki rigs. String a few of them head high around the boat and you'll find the culprits. They will need medical attention to get the hooks removed. Just remember that they are there before you go in or you may self inflict some major pain. Spike

What do you use and why is it the best? I used to like Roemers but now that I'm getting older leaning out over the boat to hold it while I drop the first line down is a pain. I also have Scotty clip on's that are great. they use a long line clip to hold the release on the cable. Problem is sometimes I get cable kink due to the clip or I get coated cable damage from someone pulling the cable up and not stopping the cable at the release to remove it (auto up). Then the Scotty release slides down the cable to the first release and it damages the cable. Sometimes the retriever will knock the long line clip too and it almost falls off (happens with the lighter versions I use when fishing near home). I just tried the Chamberlain stacker this past weekend and they too you need to hold while dropping the first set up. I wasn't impressed with the method method they lock to the cable with either. It would be nice if we had a stacker you could put on easy , like the Scotty long line ones, and not worry about cable damage upon weight retrieval, like how the Roemers release and slide down. Is there an answer out there already I don't know about? Spike

Probably couldn't go wrong with any of them these days. I have Mag10 HS's and haven't had any problems (bought in 2008). Prior to that I was a manual man like yourself. I picked the HS for the speed of retrieve. Why not have the fastest if you can??? Anyweay that is what I based my opinion on. I did read a lot about Scotty's being well liked, lower profile (which is nice) and Big Jon's have been around a long time. Like I said I picked the mag 10 HS's because of the speed and I had cannon manuals without issues for years so I went that route. Spike

Anyone using these on a wire line set up? I wasn't sure how the diver would do sliding down the wire, if it would get damaged or if the wire would get damaged??? anyone try it? Concept seems good but without wire I'm not sure you could get deep enough for the August kings. Thanks, Spike

As Stoneyxc stated you can be prechecked and just show the paper work when stopped. Save a lot of time. Spike

I only got the magda's as a cheap reel and didn't expect much. I also bought some of the smaller ones for Ontario as I only go a couple times a yr so if they blow up I don't care. I'd get a better brand if I went more often. Spike

I have a couple I use for lead core. No problems so far. Drag isn't very sensitive so if your fishing light line they could be a problem. Spike

I run tag lines off the planer line to the working part of the boat. This way when you want to set a line just pull the tag line to you and the planer line is now at the back for you to attach the release and send it out. release the tag line and the planer line returns to it's normal operating position. Spike

I just made a quick disconnect on the power connection to the boat. Since my display mounted back next to the rigger I unplug the display and carry the whole wire assy with the rigger to store it. This way there is no quick disconnect to the antenna. I suppose the quick connect to the antenna would be fine, I just chose not to mess with an already delicate circuit. Power is power, but if you loose signal you'll be wondering is it the connector or the unit or something else?? I could get pictures but sounds like you need ASAP and I don't think I could get them up in the time you need it by. Spike

Has anyone tried trolling a sluggo way out back flat lined? We used them for tuna last summer and hammered them. I couldn't believe that a sluggo trolled on the surface with such a minute profile would take 5 of the 6 hits we had that day. I was thinking it might be worth trying on freshwater lakes early season. Spike

Thanks to everyone for the responses and pm's. I have passed the information on and obviously his condition will dictate the rest. I wish it was May right now so he could get this trip in. Not so sure he'll be able to get it done in a month or two. He's been battling Cancer for about a year and a half now. They found some new tumors and are trying some different treatments. I asked him if they had given him a time estimate and he said they hadn't but he knew it wouldn't be long as he is weak. Since that conversation he ran into my sister at the hospital and told her they gave him 3 months. He still hasn't told me that information and until he does I'm not going to let on I know. I just hope to share some quality time before we part our ways on earth. Saddest part is he is only 51 yrs old. Way to young.............. Mark CaptSpike

My buddy who has terminal cancer is looking to set up a trip before his time comes. Asked me about fishing in Ontario April to May. I recommended Brown trout fishing but would like to hear some other options. I am only familiar with the East end and know of a couple of Captains I'd recommend to him from what I know. Can anyone help me point him to some other options that may or may not be on the East end? He loves fishing and wants to experience something he never has before. Years ago we would come out and fish the fall run from my boat. I'm not confident I could put him on fish any other time of the year without some trial and error. Has anyone tried vertical jigging for them when they are that deep? I would think it would work. It works on Tuna and they swim fast. Why not salmon? Mark

Several more kings hooked and lost with one steelhead landed. All fish on spin doc's and flys. Day two: Started early and no bites until 8 am. The 305 out wire went again. Slowed down quite a bit until around two when we got into a couple fish that got off and a stocker bow. Then just before sun set we got into two more kings on a mtndew spin with a hammer down 65 on the rigger. Bing bang then nothing. Day three: Not one bite all morning. Went to eat and check the dopler. Weather looked OK so we launched again around 4:30. Made a pass east and reversed to head west. Got back about 3/4 of the way and headed to shore due to a storm fast approaching. Storm ended up breaking up and passing us. We decided to stay in since there was only going to be about an hour left to fish and it hadn't been good for most people out there. Day four: Fishing by 5:30 great picture, no fish. Tons of boats everywhere. Picked a coho on a silver protroll and packer fly. That was our only fish. Got off the water at 8:30 pm. Hoping for a late bite. Boats beside us got fish behind us got fish we couldn't buy a second hit. We had all the right lures in the spread (yeah spread, four rods, lol). Changed distance off the ball up down and around but no bites. Saw quite a few fish shoot up to look at the ball and head off with out hitting. Overall not a bad trip as we had two days where we had some action. Just wish the action was a little more prolonged rather than the half hour bite then nothing. Our largest fish this trip was 27lbs. I heard a lot of names on the radio from this site. Didn't meet anyone that I know of anyway. Things I learned from this trip. 1. more rods in the water is a good thing. We were limited in the water we could cover with four. 2. I don't have enough lures to match what the salmon may be hitting at any particular time. I did research this site and have the most popular lures. When those don't work I'm dead in the water. 3. I heard on the radio with a SE or SW wind that the deeper you go the bumpyer it gets. I liked that one and found it to be true. 4. The lake can lay right down real fast and get back up just as fast. 5. Listen to the locals. When they say weather is coming and they run to the barn you better be right behind them. 6. I should have bought a green protroll, but I wasn't sure what type of taping should have been on it...................Too many choices. 7. I got lucky getting out all 8 days that I planned to fish this year. That doesn't happen to everyone. 8. I saved $25 by not entering the LOC derby. Heading to lake Ontario for Wed.-Sunday. Looks like we may get blown off Fri-Sat. Any suggestions on an alternate lake to fish? I talked to a guy last week that said Seneca would be a blow off if Ontario is one, so not sure where to head after that. We are fishing out of a 18' Lund. Mark

I have a couple socks but I had a greenie on board so I couldn't experiment too much. It was tough enough just to get lines in and keep the boat straight and at the right speed. Next trip I have a little more experience on board with me and should be able to play a little more. I will likely drop the socks out and see if that gets me in the zone and save my wrist from constant throttle adjustment. I do see a kicker/control king in the future. I have a 5hp but it is so much louder than the 150, lol. You can't even hear the 150 running. Mark
