Usually fished out there with two guys. This year a third has joined us. 2 Downriggers on the boat. How would you run the rods? I usually run two on riggers and two dipsy rods. Normally I would just stack the other two rods but I have seen alot about running four dipsys these days. Where would you add the other two lines, Downrigger or dipsys, and why? Thanks, Spike

I read here earlier that there was a chance to get three rods per person on Lake O. Did anything ever come of that? Thanks, Spike

Why when i click on the category's do I just get a comment page? Is it still under construction? Spike

Yeah I saw the factory seconds but figured with shipping they'd be the same price as a new one. Some sites have free shipping so.....I figured I'd look around a bit and see what the best deal out there is. Spike

What's the best downrigger Release?
CaptSpike replied to HOLY DIVER's topic in Tackle and Techniques
Surfing the web today I found the roemer site is back up. Looks like they are making them again! I also had problems last year with lighter line and the roemer kinking them and weakening the line. I was thinking of screwing a pinch pad release to the roemer. Reason being on my coated cable when retrieving the weight the clip on stacking pinch pad slides down the cable cutting thru the coating. A roemer just pops the cam clip and away it slides no issues with cable damage. Anyone have any other reccomendations for the coated cable for stacking that wont damage on weight retrieval? I try to stop it in time to prevent the sliding but I have mag 10's and they crank. Spike -
Where is the best place to get the otter boat planers? Looking for the best price. Also tried to log on to Fatnancy's website and it times out. Are they still in business? Spike

I didn't take into account the wave action and cavitating. I am leaning to the 25" length anyway, as stated better bite. Spike

I have an 18 lund sport angler. I ran a 5hp honda as my kicker last yr. I'm looking to upgrade to the 9.9 honda. I have heard a lot of good things about them. Question is would the 8 hp be just as good? I haven't heard much about them. Also I have a 25" transom. Should I go with the 25" kicker or could I get by with a 20". Reason I ask is I'd like to be able to use the kicker on a smaller boat from time to time but not at the risk of sacrificing performance on the 18. Spike

My thoughts exactly. Amazing that after all that they still felt compelled to put it on the air. IDIOTS is the only word that comes to mind. Yeah lets all go die for a whale. There has to be an easier way. The comment above about not knowing this still went on rings true. Who the heck is even hearing about their efforts save for the new series?? the way that Capt. operates no wonder Green Peace doesn't even want anything to do with him. A loose cannon that will likely in the future get people killed. Hope they put him away for life when that happens, just a matter of time. Spike

Down rigger cable. you may have hit the nail on the head. I had two line retrievers that I made and the diameter of the pully was only like 1/2". I noticed that week I fished Ontario that my coated cable was getting areas of break thru on the coating which I figured out to be from the retrieve I had made. I use to use the retrieve on a manual rigger with no problems but now with the mag10's it comes in pretty fast and I saw the pully moing in with the line and pinning against the DR end pully. That is probably where it pulling over a hard surface occured as the wieght retrieve pullys were not really to free wheeling. I have since replaced them with the scotty's hoping not to score the coated cable anymore. I did hope to find out why the cable might have pig tailed and I think I just did. Thanks Tbromund! If it happens again with the new wieght retrievers I have a different problem. Spike

I was thinking the same thing but at boat side they tracked ok. It was on my rigger without the probe too! Guess I'll keep an eye on it next time I have to deploy the 13lb torpedo's (next year). Spike

Subsiding to 1-3 I'd go for it. You always have the whole day Sat. too. Spike

I hope we don't ever forget. Not to get political but doesn't anyone see anything wrong with one of the canidates? I know he isn't iraq or anything but just the name and the running mates name you can make osama bin ladden out of. What is up with that???? Spike

I just went to use my DR which I haven't used since my trip to NY and the first 100 ft of the cable was coiling like a pigs tail with no tension on it. What would cause that? I was running 13lb torpedo weights in NY. It almost seems like the cable twisted thus causing it to coil??????? Anyone ever have this problem? I switched it out with the cable I had from installing a speed temp unit so all is fine now. Weird first time that ever happened to me. Spike

An evening at the boat ramp will give you plenty of mounting ides too. as boats come in check them out and see what works for yours. You can mount riggers forward but be careful not ot go too far forward where the wire will foul the props on a turn. I think it was 1/4 the length or something like that as a max distance forward. good luck you have a lot of knowledge to gain. Your in the right place to get it too. Spike

I have seen some recent catches out of Sebago, I may have to start fishing that lake next year. Spike

Wierd part is their fishing dept. is so disorganized. You could be just avbout anywhere in it find something for a different species than the area you are in. The spin docs were over by the boating equipment and downriggers not even near a lure....????? Lucky to find them. Spike

Went to Cabela's in Maine today to return two pancake weights. Browsing around I notice they have some Fishlander lures. Then I spy a bunch of 42nd fishlander lures. I scooped them all up. $2.88 each!. I also stocked up on a few other choice colors for $3.88 each!. Meandered around a bit more and found they carry spin doctors. Bought a couple colors of those that I didn't have. I was very pleased to see they were carrying NY fishing gear. We don't usually find that close to home. I was also able to pick up a net with a loooong handle (I only had a 4' handle for my last trip out). $40 on that with the coated net and all. That to me was a steal. Now I just need to find more time to fish Ontario and get some use of of this gear. Spike

Left the dock Wed and the speed temp gage was dead. Bad battery. Instead of going in to the truck for the new battery we stayed out and fished. Marked a bunch of fish west in 250' of water. Managed only two fish, a nice king and a steelhead. Thursday we realized why we should have gone in for the speed temp gage, lol. Speed was way different in different directions form the gps to the down speed. We went 6 for 12 on Thursday with some huge fish. Thursday we fished in 130' of water as the down temp was at the 70' range. Many boats fished inside of that and did well but we stayed out and away from the pack. Friday the temp was in even further. We went 6 for 6 with a slower day seeing less fish but the results were the same. Thursday's evening bite was the best they had all year so we hung in for the Friday bite. The screen lite up just as the sun was going down. We got all big fish on Friday (only one small one). Saturday was not very kind to us. We only landed one fish so we were one for one. We tried to play in the pack in 90-100 feet of water and got cut off by some jerk going the complete opposite troll from everyone else. As I slowed the weights hung and you can read the outcome in the general area post I put up giving a shout out to Jekyll. We were back in business by 3:30 and went 0-0 on the evening bite that never happened for us and most. Talked to a couple guys fishing east and Saturday was much better for them. Spike Forgot to add we ended up using just Spin docotrs with flies. Not sure of the fly names but the SD's were green (a couple different shades) and white. Green did better with most of the fish coming on wire dipseys set on 2 anywhere from 215-371 out. Green on green as most boats were calling.

The wet towel did the trick. Thanks everyone. Spike

I was fishing Oswego this Saturday and someone cut me off causing me to slow waaay down. Rigger balls dropped and hung. Lost the whole lot on the speed temp rigger but had a line hang in the cable. After what seemed like a eternity I was able to position the boat over the rigger that still had cable and retrieve the wieght and all the cable (it was a new torpedo weight so thank you lady luck). Next I only had a line that I knew was hung in the cable of the speed temp rigger. Pumped the rod up and manuvered the boat and was able to grab the cable. Manuvered some more and was able to get right over it and free it saving the gage and weight. I was now cableless and the antenna from the probe fell off into the water when the meley went down. Jekyll called for a report mid morning and I relayed my misfortune and that I was trying to chase down a cable and antenna. Jekyll then told me he had both on board and would front me them to get me back on the water. I met him at his dock and he handed the cable and antenna over. I was able to get back up and running by 3:30 and fished the evening (went 0-0 but at least I was fishing). A huge thank you to Jekyll and his kindness for saving the day. Here is a guy I met at the docks two weeks ago while waiting for a strom to pass. I found out he posts to this board and we talked a few minutes about the board and that was it. I pm'd him a few times and offered to share what I knew when he came up for the weekend. He was willing to save the day for a stranger he had met briefly and and in reality doesn't know very well. Cudo's to you Jekyll the world needs more people like you in it. I'd also like to thank Chris at St. Thomas (I think) Outfitters. He had a cannon wheel in stock that got a rigger repaired for me on Friday. Very quick turn around on a message I left him when I called from on the water. The service out in the Oswego area, from my standpoint, was outstanding. Great trip and I will be back. I'll report in the report section. Spike

What type of weight are people using?
CaptSpike replied to CaptSpike's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
I was wondering if anyone has ever tried this and what the results were. I have 10lb weights and would like to be heavier. What would happen if I had two weights on each cable? I could hang a smaller weight off the rear eye of the upper heavier weight to get the desired weight. Say and 8lb ball with a 6lb below it would give me 14lb total weight. I would think they would track ok and with your release set to the cable and not on the ball there shouldn’t be any issues. Is it worth giving it a try? Spike
