I run a 250 main outboard ad 9.9 kicker I'm a fan of trolling with small kickers many reasons mentioned above. Put a 250-300 on it and a 15hp kicker

Right...and it's a huge misconception that a fully rigged aluminum boat weighs less than glass, they usually weigh about the same. However not all glass boats are considered equal either. If you compare a 28 Carolina to a 28 Baha Cruiser you'll find they they are tons off from each other. My buddy has a 32 carolina that weight 24,000 buddy has a 29 baha weighs 12,500. A Quality built aluminum boat isn't light. Ranger and Lund walleye boats weight the same.

Yep, I'll be plugging it in soon and I'll take a couple screen shots. From what I saw on Erie you only get 1ft contours around reef, shoals and structure not on open water, that would be annoying if you did. I'll take a look at Onieda for you and report back really soon.

fishfinders
K Gonefishin replied to ironangler222's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
Correction. Airmar does make quality transducers for many makes of sonar, but they do not make the Lowrance 83/200 or 50/200 or the 200 kHz transducers that ship as OEM transducers. The P-66 T/M and the P-319 Thru-Hull (mine) are excellent upgrades to your Lowrance HDS units or the legacy units with the Broadband Sonar black box. Edd Which ones do they make? -

K Gonefishin replied to ironangler222's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
Airmar makes Lowrance transducers BTW, they have improved the quality of them but used to have alot of problems with them on the X series units and LCX series units, many that shipped with the 10 inch scree for whatever reason. The HDS series 83/200 are very solid ducers that perform well on Erie and Ontario the broadband also helps substantially. -
I just picked up Hotmaps Platnium East yesterday, the charts for Erie are awesome, they let me check it out at BPS before buying it, if you can wait a little bit next time I'm at my boat (it's in storage) I can take some pictures of what Oneida looks like. I didn't look at Ontario but I'm sure it looks just like Erie. Great chip and your covered anywhere you go as it's the whole East region.

I start trolling cranks as soon as I get the boat out in early spring off Cleveland, far far far away from where the spawning action is going on in the western basin. Anyplace you find nearshore structure you'll find walleye, not all walleye migrate west you'll find resident fish all over the warm water shores of lake erie in the spring, any humps, drop off, ledges, breakwalls, current points will hold walleye even if subtle. Try Reef Runners or Deep Husky Jerks from 1.2.-1.7 mph.

Don't buy a boat with wood in it. 100% glass!

July is a great time to fish offshore on lake ontario, I guess I'm lucky most times in July when I come up from Ohio to fish in July we are usually greated with really nice hot summer weather and light winds, we boogie out 6-10 miles and start catching, no different than any other fishing trip, keep your eye on the forcast and radar and you'll be good, if something appears questionable or wind starts to pick up or forcast is calling for a blow get out of dodge but don't wait, the lake can get ugly in a hurry.

Lowrance/Lowrance wiring compatability?
K Gonefishin replied to Fish Hunter's topic in This Old Boat
No problem. I currently own 5 lowrance products, Ice 68c, HDS-7, GlobalMap 4800, LCX38HD and X-135 and have owned X19 two X18's and another global map so I know all about compatibility. I know alot of the walleye pro staff as well and all of my friends usually have 1-4 mounted on their tourney rigs so you tend to learn about what's what. I'm even starting to pick up a little about the Birds! I'm an electronics nerd it's cool stuff. One of these days we will see our speed n temp on our Fishfinders through NMEA network. COUNT ON IT! -
Lowrance/Lowrance wiring compatability?
K Gonefishin replied to Fish Hunter's topic in This Old Boat
Assuming you have an LCX-111 any of the other LCX units will work, since you want a big screen any of the units with blue connectors will work, models you will want to look for are. http://www.lowrance.com/Products/Legacy ... CX-Series/ The ones with HD at the end like your 111 have the hard drive with the built in maps. walleyefirst and walleyecentral in the classifieds used units pop up, ebay, bass boat central, craigslist, thehulltruth, just keep your eyes peeled they do popp up. I have a 38HD which is the 8 inch screen however I just purchased a new HDS unit and they are also plug and play so if you find the right deal on a HDS 7, HDS-8 or HDS-10 it will also work. -
Vex make a great unit I like them better than the Marcum. If you go with Vex I say go Fl-18 or Fl-20, the zoom feature is really great regardless of depth, really helps you key in on your bait and fish alot better, Fl-18 and up units also have bottom lock so if your winter or early spring jigging from the boat it really helps and would make it almost impossible without that option. I myself actually run a Lowrance m68, I got a good deal on used one and I don't think I would go back to a flasher, it's unbelievable for bottom hugging fish and I think you can get a better idea of how the fish are reacting to your jigging due to the fact that you can see a history on the LCD screen versus a flasher. I also like the fact that I can adjust the depth range extremely well, it's super bright with alot of screen adjustments when it comes to brightness, sensitivity, split screen zoom, and it's silent. Some guys say LCD's aren't instant, I call BS you move your bait and the bait moves on the screen with it. I also think the screen is less confusing when you have a couple fish going and you can tell what's what especially when you have a couple hot fish and two guys working them, on a flasher the lights just go crazy and the separation and color gets all mixed up when they are about to hit and you end up losing some bites because of it. I just got my 68 last year and only used it for on Erie but I smacked the perch and caught some walleye with it, it's retarded sensitive when set on 4x zoom on the bottom I could tell when the perch stole my bait off my buckshot and I was only using half a minnow and they were belly in the mud in deep water. They ALL work and well, I suggest fishing both LCD and Flasher with a friend before you make up your mind but one thing for sure is if you go flasher don't buy the cheapest you will end up upgrading eventually just as you would most every other piece of fishing equipment, the bottom line units get your feet wet but you get what you pay for when it comes to features and functionality.

14#2oz walleye a couple nights ago in Lake Erie from shore
K Gonefishin replied to jimski2's topic in Walleye
This one was caught on 12/29 from shore. The one above was caught from a boat off Cleveland. Lots of huge fish came of Cleveland this fall/early winter, the action was really good. -
Just return it and find another store that has an HDS-7 in stocks so you can get the 200.00 rebate. I purchased an HDS-7 from cabelas in November and just filled my rebate out last night actually it was a great deal. The new gen2 units biggest thing is structure map and speed, which for the lake ontario troller won't do you much good so I suggest just finding a great deal on a gen1 unit and putting that extra coin into a map chip or your pocket. You can check BBG Marine or Bass Pro Shops or just Google HDS-7 under Google Shopping. You'll find one BTW- BIG time screen difference between the 5 and 7 just as there is between 7, 8 and 10.

Mark's a pimp you guys just didn't know it. he's a blast to have on the boat too. When I come up to fish Ontario he is a permanant fixture on my boat, always a ton of fun.

Mounting a new kicker motor with power tilt.
K Gonefishin replied to retsey's topic in This Old Boat
Having it mounted dead center of the boat is good and bad. Although not a cheap solution but without a doubt the best solution would be a TR-1 Auto pilot. It's a Auto Pilot made to be mounted to kicker motors alot of guys run them on Erie (and probably on Ontario) they are sweet. If your running a full inboard not much else you can do, no system made for outboards is going to help you. https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=11573 -
Defintely have to run one on 50 and the other on 200. This is where the newer models LCX and HDS shine where you can run one transducer and display and share data across your network. You can also pick and choose what you want to show on each unit. Waypoint sharing is nice as well.

K Gonefishin replied to hawkeye625's topic in Tackle and Techniques
I wouldn't switch power pro is about as good as it gets. depending on how much you have on your spool and how much of it you have used common practice on Erie is just just flip the line around, tie off the end onto an empty reel and use what was burried deep into your reel. it's like spooling fresh why waste all that good line. -

I wouldn't hesitate. Since this system has come out all Ranger boats come pre-rigged from the factory with this new system and my dealer has sold a ton of the including a few to pro staff friends not one compliant yet. Seastar makes bulletproof stuff and they don't put out junk and their customer service is 2nd to none. My Ranger came pre rigged with a tie bar as pictured below but when my kicker is tilted up so high my steering gets tight mainly in harbors and around launch ramps so I am going to upgrade to this new system as well. I can't wait to have full lock to lock turning and no bar to worry about breaking, I've broken mine twice already (where it connects to the kicker bolt) and had to get it welded, sucks thank god I have tiller and auto pilot on the bow mount. If you look behind my buddy you can see the bar that ties mine together, don't get me wrong it works great and all but in the 4 years I've owned the boat it's broke twice and this systems cost 250.00 all stainless etc. What model hydro is that? my buddy has a 2300 rigged with a yamaha 15hp 4 stroke with a bracket and ezsteer. if you scroll down you'll see a picture of his boat with the kicker http://fishcrazycharters.com/Night-Trol ... w-How.html -

FYI- if you have hydraulic steering teleflex has a new kicker steering cable out, it's the cats meow. I have some fancy 250.00 stainless steel bar but I've broke the connection point on my kicker twice I think I'm moving to this new system no bars at all. I had a panther power lift on my last boat, worked great. I have a static plate now with power trim/tilt build into my pro kicker. I like it itegrated better, eventually the solenoids on the panther wear out. Those manual brackets aren't that great, I know guys with them, they hate em. http://www.teleflexmarine.com/products/ ... ar_kicker/ http://www.teleflexmarine.com/wp-conten ... ie-bar.pdf -
How many over 11 you guys get?
