  1. A new guy took over his website and he now owns a bait shop in Huron Ohio. I'll do some diggin and try and find his contact info, I'm a local Erie guy. Update: This guy is a member of a Ohio fishing site called Ohio Game Fishing, I tracked down a thread he posted on and sent him an email with the link to your post. Hopefully he will straighten this out for you. I do not have direct access to his email. just trying to help. I have Dave's cell number but it's not going to do you any good.
  2. Does anyone know how the weeds have been on Chautauque this year. I was thinking about a November trip. do they usually die off by then?
  3. Yeah really. Looks sweet.
  4. I had luck on 25 and 26 inch leads on our trip to Ontario this year.
  5. I use a similair box, from the guys who offer the spoon caddy. I cut the names of the flies off the back of the package then just slide them in, although they fell all over the boat, probably going to tape them to the outside with packing tape. http://olepetestackle.com/34%20tube%20box%20a.jpg http://olepetestackle.com/Tackle%20Storage.htm
  6. 8 backed worked for me this weekend.
  7. Fished Olcott the 19th thru the 24th am- First time salmon fishing out of my own boat and only salmon fished one other time and it is a blast, the weather was great and the laughs were pletiful. Wednesday Am- Fished in front 60-120 FOW took two rips but no fish, headed to 470’s, boxed 4 steelies biggest around 7 pounds a couple on wire couple on riggers mostly spoons one came on a spinny and fly carmel dolphin SS super slim took can’t remember the others, took a nice brown on 450 copper with a black NK 28 white back black front with purple tape. PM trip, jumped on my buddies boat for the evening trip since we had two boats up with only 2 guys on each boat, daytime buddy went home he’s local. Fished out in front 65-78 FOW near the red barn, took a 23 pounder on a mountain dew spinny/green crinkle a tom mik parked at 47 down on the rigger 20 back from the ball, fished peeled over 250, 30 minutes later we hit a 15 pounder on a bloody nose moonshine 86 back on wire on a 2 setting that fish ripped about 160, that same spoon took a nice rip but didn’t buckle up, caught them both in opposite directions. Thursday- Took a few steelies biggest around 6 pounds, Pm bite, couple rips no hookups, had a couple shakers throughout the day. Friday Am, started a in 42 ft of water worked the inside the whole morning trip, 20 minutes into it as the sun just came up the wire fired 77 back on a 2 setting white crush glow with a atomic mirage fly took a 17 pounder. During the day we let go a couple small ones around 20 inches, one on gold stinger 42nd and lemon ice mag stinger. PM trip. Fished the same spot as the evening before, took a low teens fish on the rigger 35 back from the ball R&R deep cup white glow back, one other rip and a couple releases but no hookups. Saturday- AM, one steelie on lead core 10 colors knot to the water, 42nd 8 inch pro troll Michigan stinger with 42nd A tom mik fly fish was 6-7 pounds. PM- lost a 10 pounder just shy of the net in 74 FOW on a DW Mag glow bloody nose off wire 86 back, 20 minutes later had a sick rip that cleaned my spoon off, the marks and bait where awesome figured it would be a great spot to start the next day. Sunday AM--last day of the trip and I was determined to get my brother and best friend a nice king so we headed to the same spot as Saturday evening in 55-78 FOW about 1 mile west of the barn where we left off the night before the bait was thicker and the marks were from 30 all the way to the bottom and very consistent, lake was flat as can be around 8 or so we popped a 5 pounder on the rigger tossed him back he was green still and released really well. Late morning in the 9:00 hour in 74 FOW the rigger fires 42 down emerald shiner chrome series spinny with either a pro/am or big fin A tom mik, 8 back from the ball, fished ripped off 350 ft of line, fish was a monster and weighed 28 ½ . Got all set back up again 20 minutes later same spot the wire fires hard 86 back with a hammer time spinny with hammer fly, fished took off hard and had us clearing lines once again as it came up to the surface quick and bee lined toward shore, 20 minutes later after the craziest battle I’ve ever seen we landed it, the fish went 27 pounds, with two big ones in the box we broke down the rods and headed back to Cleveland happy. All 3 majors and all 3 teens came at 3.2 GPS on top when on my friends boat 3.2 on top meant 2.7 at the ball so we stuck with that with no speed and temp on my boat and it worked, the fly leaders where either 25 or 26 inches on all the fish that hit spinny/fly combo’s It was a great first trip and I can’t wait to do it again I might be able to make it back up for one last trip in early September. Thanks for the help on the questions I’ve posted a lot of good knowledge that paid off.
  8. You will see MWC boats in Barcelona, the last MWC was won there. I know 5 boats that are fishing up there for the tourney and they all plan on checking it out. The weather is going to be good for them, pre fishing that's a different story. I was suppose to fish it but going salmon fishing instead I think there is around 50 boats so I'm sure they will all be spread out.
  9. No it's fishing line but it's made of wire. Malin is a pretty popular brand in 30 pound, spool up a large lineounter as full as it would go. 1000 ft spools are what most guys buy. The line allows great stregth, depth, and it resists water fleas from building up on the line.
  10. I'm leaving for Olcott after work to fish for 5 days, I know it's been blowing hard up there, what is the usual pattern for Kings after a hard N-NE blow? is the inside area going to be any good or a complete waste, head offshore? I have some boats to cover water and work with but figured I'll see what some of you guys have to say. Thanks
  11. *Chomp*... There goes the paint... Haha...LOL they work great though.
  12. I agree, but for guys like me who are from out of state (ohio) most of our local shops (walleye gear) they do not carry to much salmon gear, I always purchase from local shops if they do have stuff in stock but alot of the spoons, fly's and flashers and dodgers aren't available. The shop I run out of ordered stuff for me and he does carry a limited selection of spin docs and spoons for salmon, hardware, beads, hooks and flouro for leaders which I did buy locally. When I get up to Point Breeze/Olcott next tuesday I'll be sure to leave a couple hundred Ohio dollars in the local shops I'm sure of it. Gotta support the local shop!! I hit the web as last resort plus from out of state no sales tax and free shipping. I spent over 500 with gloutdoors if I would have gotten all that stuff through local shops it would have cost over 600, no cabelas or bass pro for me.
  13. http://www.loc.org/derby/registration/derbyrules.asp When I clicked rules I got the rules page. ???
  14. That's what I thought...thanks againg guys.
  15. Thanks guys, much appreciated. Has anyone used the Offshore SST boards?, I have a ton of the yellow ones but the newer orange ones are geard toward Salmon fishing, different releases etc. Jekyll or anyone else, do you slide the keel weight in the church board to get it to ride better with all the weight behind it.
  16. I have a couple church boards that I might take salmon fishing with me next week question is I have a 10 color leadcore and a copper setup my buddy is letting me borrow. How much copper and leadcore have you guys ran off of a church board without any issues. I think the copper my buddy is letting me borrow is 450 of copper. How do you rig the boards and with what release, I assume you let them slide down after a fish hits? Do most guys connect the line to the backing after letting out however much line. Any tips on running these boards for salmon would be helpful. My other alternative is just run one or the other down the chute with no boards. Thanks
  17. Sure is you'll be fine. I had a 16 ft tiller at one time and would always go out on Erie which can be a little worse than Ontario as far as snottyness of rough water, choppier vs wider wave span. Just watch the weather and go out on a 2ft or less day and you'll be just fine, make sure you have all saftey gear and having a VHF marine band radio...just in case and don't go alone.
  18. I've placed 3 orders with GLoutdoors.com and am very happy with Captain Scott's service, on my 3rd large order within a 5 week period I got a free Dreamweaver hat and even some personal emails from Scott asking how I found out about them etc. We sent some emails back and forth, very nice guy and very helpful as well. I've told alot of my buddy's about his store and he will get my business again in the future. Prices are great as well and I got free shipping all 3 times. (order's over 100.00) can't beat that!!!
  19. I'm new at Salmon fishing but I'm going to enter anyways since I'll be up there, plus I'm pretty lucky I'd rather be Lucky than good LOL. I'll be fishing both Olcott and out of the Oak the 19th thru the 24th. Where ever they are going better I'll be fishing there but staying in Olcott.
  20. Anybody use them and what do you think of them, on a local site someone is selling a set of them for real cheap, figured I'd see if anyone has used them and what you think of them? Thanks
  21. It very well could be the strain, here on Erie we get the manistee strain from Michigan waters that are stocked in our tribs every spring, these fish are spring run fish vs Skamania strain which I believe are fall run fish, the skamania strain are a longer slender fish, the manistee strain fish are a little thicker and more stout. We do get stray skaminia fish in Erie and we see a few caught each season, they look like super models compared to the normal steelies we catch all the time.
  22. Now that's what you call bad luck, the article said 1 in 1 billion. more like that will probably never happen again like that. What a shame to get killed fishing.
  23. Yeah I use slider on Erie for Steelies all the time so I do make sure of that, the ones I picked up in Dreamweavers and Sampo's are two different sizes, both heavy duty but the sampo's are bigger.
  24. Speaking of spin docs, what are most guys running of 10 colors down the chute? most of the guys I talked with said spoons and leave the spin docs for riggers and wire. What are you guys running.
  25. I picked up some 60 pound cross lock ball bearing sampo's are these sufficient in strength for sliders and to attach spoons to dipsey leaders? I'll be pulling wire for dispeys and 30 pound mono for riggers. What about connection points for attaching spin docs. I got some DW ones as well. thanks
