My son and I fished there on Friday. The fog was really bad, even up until noon hour. We landed 6 Kings and 1 Bow. Best salmon was 13 lbs and Bow was 13.40 lbs. Had a few other trips on the dipsy and releases on the riggers. Seems like with the wind the way it was and the rains earlier, most fish were closer to shore than norm. Salmon were down deep and not really marked around 90 ft and smaller shakers were in with the bows around 35' in about 140' of water. Best bet is to head for the cooler waters until the thermocline sets up or look for the scum lines. Cut bait clean and Black on Green flies seems to work better now than small NK's. Oh and by the way, lake freighters are whole different story in the fog. Your little horn is not much but a laugh for the men on that ship. They operate them ships with precision in the fog. You will find that when you fish alot everyday, the weight of the rod and reel becomes very important. To enjoy a full days of fishing, being it casting, jigging, float fishing, drifting...I would recommend the lightest of each and the best warranty/guarantee provided. When you do have an accident with the rod or when the reel stops turning, you will feel alot better that your gear will be replaced or repaired. To try and find a reel and a rod to fish all species is very tough to do. Most people have a few rods and reels to adjust for each days fishing. Loomis has a 9' GL2 graphite 2 piece pole that can be used for many species. If you do choose to use a baitcaster, I would recommend the Shimano Calais. You can cast a country mile, jig, float fish and drift with this casting reel. I use the above setup to catch everything from Salmon, Lakers, Bows, Muskie and even Gobies (lol). I was lucky and got my reel from Ebay for $250 shipped. I got the pole from your local tackle store and if you do ask, you can get a good price. Good Luck there!

I had only caught one Salmon in Lake Ontario in a boat until I read all of your info here on how to catch 'em. Today, I finally set myself up with Dipsey and wire. Wow! It was finally fun out there. Thx for the info on rod, reel, wire, backing, twilli, knots, swivels, fluorocarbon, depth info and flasher/fly. It all came together like a dream. Sure was funny though when I hit bottom the first time with the Dipsey out. Found out when loading boat up to go home that it was on a #1 setting instead of a #2. All of you guy's should get free equipment or something 'cause your info is priceless and my tackle shop sure does love ya now...lol.

The best fishing store near Niagara Falls, Ontario is in St. Catharines near Port Dalhousie. Peter's Bait & Tackle on Secord Drive. This is about a 15 to 20 min. drive from the Falls. They carry top of the line fishing equipment and bait. Take the Lake Street exit off the Q.E.W. and turn left at the lights. Follow down towards the lake about 3 sets of lights and turn right onto Secord Drive. Hopes this helps you. Rob!
