I posted a thread a week or so ago about this topic- Being a younger Angler (23 years old) I have heard about the scale in high school/college art classes- but never followed it when fishing. I never really followed it in Lake Erie because its pretty shallow and I dont fish waters over 35-40 feet often. However in Ontario I paid a little more attention to the scale- the next time I am fishing Ontario I will follow it more closely. Just remember when a lure company makes a lure color/pattern it has to appeal to a fishermans eyes too- lure company's gotta make their money.

If your fishing any lake with a large flea population, do not use braid! but if your fishing waters without fleas braid is a very good type of line, i like 30lb test

I just purchased a Lite Bite Slide Diver. I have a couple of questions for people that are familiar with them; What works better for mono and braid- The spring coil, or the clear vinyl tube? It just seems to me that the spring might cause some wear and tear to the line. I have heard of people using 40lb flurocarbon 3-6 inches before the release arm, and 12 inches past the silver lite bite arm. They claim the heavier line works better for the diver, where braid might slide, even with the small surgical plastic tubing any other advice for the Lite Bite? Thanks guys

Last year we struggled with our riggers, we only get to fish ontario for one week a year, in past years though they were firing. This past year we tried everything on the riggers and I think we only had several releases all week. So i did research on this website and through word of mouth for some good info. I agree with legacy- We have 3 people so use 6 poles. The 2 dipsy's are always spin docs with flies. We have 2 riggers and run 2 poles off each. My advice is to either run a fixed spoon at the ball with a cheater spoon above it, OR run a flasher fly at the ball, and if your like us run your stacker with cheater, just make sure there is enough room between the flasher/fly and stacker set-up to avoid a big mess, if you do choose to stack riggers.

I think I have taken right around the same amount of fish with e-chips and without e-chips in the past. An E-chip will not call a fish in from 100 yards away, like a doe estrus scent could for a buck- but it could provide a spark of curiosity to some fish and that could be all it takes. I have only used Siggs flies with E-chips, and a few I tied myself that were set up like Siggs... I believe an Echip is an Echip though, regardless the brand of fly it is attached to.

Long Line Yes, that is true and I agree with you- I had no doubt that fish somehow knew that a bait fish/lure was present. I suppose the better question would be does anyone know if there are colors fish see beter than other colors in water.

I have tied several flies with E-chips- but i prefer to buy them. I tie mine between the skirt and beads. I like the tip of the skirt covering the E-chip... Just my 2 cents

This is a question I have had on my mind for a while. The deeper your spoon is in the water, the less light available- there is no color without light. So at what depth does light begin to fade and quit? I researched this topic a little bit and looked for answers, but I could only find biology reports that well over my head- I found one chart, but of course everything on the internet cannot always be trusted. The chart shows Blue visible up to 120 feet, yellows and purples visible up to 65 fow, yellow at 45, and reds/oranges only around 20 fow. http://www.aquasonic.com.au/brochures/i ... page20.pdf several factors decide light penetration into water. first, fresh or salt water. how much phytoplankton is in the water and how much zoo plankton is present. Phytoplankton and zoo plankton are said to absorb over 60% of light. Any thoughts???? light penetration or spoon colors and light in fow? fish bite, so they have to see/sense something...

We use the "zipper" technique to get the mud vein out of the fillets- and as gambler mentioned trim the brown meat off the filet.

A few years ago we started snipping the gills of the fish we catch. Does anyone here snip the gills of their fish? It eliminates almost all the brown meat on the filets, and the fish seems to taste much fresher.

Dave- The best advice I can give is to ask many questions, take note of the answers. It may be a good idea to take notes after each fish caught- time, location, fow, set-up, direction of troll, etc. And do not get frustrated. Do not plan to have a catch of a lifetime, or a great fishing trip your very first time out- things will go wrong, but that is part of the journey!

Marinate your fish with 1/4 part orange juice, 1/4 part Italian dressing, and 1/2 water for 2 hours. Place your filets on a broiler pan with lightly coated pam or olive oil. Use Lawry's season salt, cilantro, parsley, pepper, and lemon pepper. Add lemon slices on top if desired. Place on a hot grill 400+ for 10-17 mins depending on the thickness of the filets. my favorite way to cook/eat fish... unless its sushi!

I like using Okuma rods and reels. My dipsy reels are "Magda Line Counter" and rods are 10 foot "Convector" dispy diver rod. I like the 10 foot poles because it makes it much easier to net fish. I have used 8 foot poles before with divers on lake erie for walleye- but I will shorten my leader to 5-6 feet.

Jax- I actually do not own a #50 diver; I have never seen one in stores, would have to order it online. I do own many 20, 30, and 40 sizes though. I checked your website out, very nicely put together! Chowder- Last year a guy who owns his own tackle shop right outside of Cleveland (http://www.erieoutfitters.com) lent us his wire dipsey set-up. He actually has his own Stinger Spoon pattern (Craigs Christmas, Craigs Christmas reverse) To be honest didnt pull one fish while using it- All of our fish that came from divers came off #30 mono on a 1 setting with the 42 combo or green crush spindoc with Siggs bluegreen and green hypnotists. We are going to give wire another try though this year. Chinook- I have heard the boat name Night Crawler mentioned before over the radio, but I have never met him. There is a boat named Prowler that fishes the Oak every year and stays at North of the Ridge; I met him while staying at the campground this past year. Prowler's home port is Vermillion, OH. He is the only guy I have met that fishes the same waters around my home port and the Oak outside of my family.

I kind of expected that to be the case. They are popular on Erie when the reef runners are dead off the boards. I havent decided yet If I am going to invest in copper or lead core for basically one week of fishing a year- If I dont pick up copper or lead I suppose the Jet could come in handy when the fish are a little higher. This past summer I caught 2 steels while using a Jet diver & an SS tranny off a walleye board. I have not heard any talk of Jets on this website or from locals when visiting the Oak. The #50 Jet will reach depths of 48-52 feet. Anyone ever give them a try?

thanks for the info on the slide divers- I went to http://www.slidediver.com and watched the video. I will for certian try one. what size slide diver and what size weight is a common use? i believe the video said 2 and 4 were availiable. thanks

Gray fox- I have heard of a wire slide diver, exactly how do they work, and how do you set one up? Our leaders are 8 feet between the diver/spin doc.

Thank you for the advice chinook, rail bird. DoubleD, that sounds great I will let you know closer to the date when I head out there- We were in and out of Captains Cove often last year. On several evenings we would take our boat down the river and fish for bass right around the cove- great time all around.

Living 30 miles west of Cleveland Ohio- I am a Browns fan-I know, I know, enough said I also am a fan of any team that plays the Stillers... GO CARDS!! Speedy Willie showed last week that he can be contained avg. only 1.8yds/carry. The cardinal D is peaking at the right time, and the Stiller O has shown to be par at times. Fitzgerald is a beast, but if Labeau can get constant pressure on Warner, It'll be trouble for the high power passing attack of the Cards. I'm rooting for the Cards, but make no mistake they'll have to play pretty good and play better at least 3 of the four quaters in order to beat the stillers. Cards by 3

I have cabin fever- from fishing in general. Bowhunting is fun, but it seems that winter and early spring takes too damn long. The lake erie steelhead havent made it into the rivers around my house yet, so thats still a no go. I decided to begin planning my 09 summer trip to Point Breeze. What are generally the better times of the year to go to slam Kings. We usually go between the last week in July or first week of august. Should I stick with that time frame or make it earlier- I cannot go later because I coach football and even getting around August 6th or 7th is pushing it. I stay at North of the Ridge Campground usually. any ideas on anything will help- this is the first time I have used the forum for planning a trip, so i figured I would take advantage of that and get some input from some you guys.. thanks!
