I'm with @rolmops on the Oswego buoy but also someone recently told me about the 'fishweather" app. Which I now also like. It has ability to show you current and predicted winds but also a full lake wind-field view all for free. The have a premium also but I have not tried that yet.

You are so he high point in the area regardless of hull material so i would say no. I left early today seeing a storm west. I saw it just slightly decrease in size but pick up anyway after fishing only half of the morning It kept getting smaller and ultimately dissipated but i dont regret coming in. I dont want to come in with the crowd, get soaked or get zapped. I have had the pants scared off of me a few times. I dont play around with this lake. I was on another where we had rods buzzing and the lines we were setting were picking up off the water and holding in the air (bait too). Granted light line and very small trolled baits for land locks but it was a moment i dont want to repeat. Bolt hit a tree on an island 1/4 mile from us. Dragging the bottom?
Fat Trout replied to lfoster607's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
I recommend you dont try to hit the bottom unless you really know what your doing. Ive had my rigger balls drag either trying to anticipate blowback while fishing clos e and or not realizing how fast the bottom came up. Fortunately I had no issues and think the bottom was sandy but it would scare the hell out of me to hang a rigger ball onnthe bottom. Ive heard of people who had their rigger ripped right off. It looks to me as though its down as was kind of expected given the loss of the 2 year classes and the inevitable age out loss of the prior big year classes we had been living off of to a larger extent. We have also had 2 bumper crops in a row of kings. Sent from my Pixel 2 using Lake Ontario United mobile app

Small Boat, Late Summer Trolling Diagram
Fat Trout replied to amerinah's topic in Tackle and Techniques
Cool drawing, and I'm an engineer too so I can appreciate it. My problem is I've been fishing the lake so long that I know you almost never get to troll that straight in a small boat so when you start crab walking to one side due to the wind or being in a turn a rigger fish goes under 2 divers or the inside diver goes under the outside diver and copper.....and then the fun really begins I tend to go with less is more. -
Terrible, inept,EXPENSIVE outboard service rant
Fat Trout replied to bulletbob's topic in This Old Boat
I wont disagree with your frustration but the reality is there is a lot more tech in newer motors. I imagine with lets say a 25yo motor shops are struggling to have people who handle both old tech and new. I had the same problem with a 2003 25hp but that was in 2008...fuel pump couldnt handle the ethanol that became more prevalent. Diaphragm got stiff. Diagnosed pretty quickly as that was a common problem at the time. Shops that cant handle the old should turn away the work or better frame the expectations. Todays morning forecast always was south or southwest 5-10 or less than 10. Other than light and variable thats the best you are gonna see. The weatherman lies a lot though so sometimes you either have to bail or make the best of it with a backup plan. Like fishing much close to shore and shallower than you wanted or switching to bass even for the same reason. Even a south wind will make chop and get rough if you are far enough out. I run a 20' aluminum and have to change my thinking all the time after getting on the lake. The oswego and other weather bouys are always good for current info. https://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/station_page.php?station=osgn6 There are no universal rules. When wind comes off a shoreline or is blocked by a point etc that can help but all bets are off once you get a few miles out. Even a 10mph wind will give you a solid chop. If you have sensitive young kids....keep as tight to the shore the wind comes off of as you can. I should add that if they are predicting W or NW or NE its almost always going to be a potential problem. There is usually no such thing as a "light" West or NW wind and when it is light it is often after being heavy for a while so it might have residual waves. from my Pixel 2 using Lake Ontario United mobile app

Inevitable true but the estimated natural reproduction numbers and rate of increase were astounding. I attributed that to the more northern location of streams, presumably lower stream temps at key times of the year. Regardless....natural reproduction is both a blessing and a curse depending on the prey fish populations. Going from zero one year to bumper crop the next makes it hard to manage Sent from my Pixel 2 using Lake Ontario United mobile app

While natural reproduction is nice you dont want to have so much that you cant manage the fishery. I had read about the Huron crash. Natural reproduction stream quality was so good it ramped up to unsustainable levels and crashed the fishery. Sent from my Pixel 2 using Lake Ontario United mobile app

Much sarcasm in my brain but I'll just go with....if it looks too good to be true...it is. There are places that discount motors...but half off? You have to ask yourself why. Plus. Unless its a small motor or you are fully capable of rigging a large outboard yourself good luck getting a good marine shop to rig and deal with your sale motor in the way you would want. Good luck. I towed someone thinking it was "my turn". I was an 18' he was a 23' or so with an outdrive and couldn't steer to save his ass. All went well but I added some grey hairs coming in the inlet and going up the river and won't do that again. I was fortunate to have 2 on board with me to assist, but don't always. The boat I towed was poorly maintained IMO and in retrospect I'm aggravated about it. I have Boat US myself, all should have a contingency. I run a 20' boat now and I'm not unwilling to help but I'm going to think it through in a different if there is a next time including making a call to the CG vs towing. My boat/crew safety and potential damage / injury to others is primary. I feel I was lucky nothing bad happened in retrospect.

Mexico 7/10
Fat Trout replied to Offshore IV's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
I just bought a spool of it a couple weeks ago from either fat Nancy's or all season sports If not there I would think gander outdoors down in Cicero. If I were you I would just run your main line straight to the flasher I run leaders mostly because I'm running flea flicker 30 lb for main line and it's almost a white color Sent from my Pixel 2 using Lake Ontario United mobile app -

Fat Trout replied to Offshore IV's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
For what its worth i run 30# seguar fluoro leaders for anything pulling a flasher. 20# for spoons. I figure out he 30# is more or less insurance since those rigs have a bit more drag in the water and the fish really shouldn't care since theres so much going on there anyway. Oswego Got 3+ Inches of Rain Yesterday
Fat Trout replied to Todd in NY's topic in Open Lake Discussion
Well id like some answers on why they cut flows so drastically in January when they were already 8" or so above average then continued that until it was too late to do anything because if the Ottawa river. Look at the ijc site and the charts of the last 3 years. That 8" is a would make a big difference....hell 4" lower would be a workd of difference. Thats why i blame plan 2014 Sent from my Pixel 2 using Lake Ontario United mobile app -
