Fishing is a reel tough job, but many tackle it.

You must go get it welded. Anything less than a good thick weld will just wear through again. Gluvit will stop leaks because it gets in between pieces and is flexible ( Think silicone paint for aluminum) but it needs nice warm weather to properly adhere.

The 22 foot Sylvan is a different version of the 22 foot Starcraft. Made in the same factory, but owned by a different family member of the starcraft owners family. They are good strong boats that give you everything a starcraft gives you. And nicer colors to boot. If you are used to an outboard, the I/O will be a bit of a change, mostly your season will become a bit shorter because of the cracked/frozen block issue. Unlike an outboard, you will have to drain the water from your block when it gets cold and often you will do that earlier rather than too late. A 3.7 liter engine is probably around 170 horse which is very strong for a 22 footer. At that price (unless there is a hidden problem) you should seriously consider it.

The thing about evinrude and mercury is not valid,I like evinrude better than mercury ,but both have to be treated right. Winterizing is done to prevent the damage done by engines that sit around too long such as fuel going bad and clogging the carbs or rust forming in the crank case and cylinders. If you use your outboard without 5 to 6 month intervals, you don't need to winterize ,regular maintenance should be enough.
-
That's because you bought an Evinrude and not a Merc. Besides,I suspect that you use that engine until very late in the season and then again very early.

Keep it vertical. Not halfway up or sideways. Rainwater or melting snow can get into the exhaust housing and freeze. Then in spring even though you did everything correct, you still have a cracked lower unit

Say goodbye to codfish for awhile in the northeast
rolmops replied to Sk8man's topic in Open Lake Discussion
I just had a thought....The goverment supports farmers when they have a bad season why can't they support the fishermen and recreational Charter boats (full timers of course) guys when they restrict them from fishing? Small time commercial fisherman do get government subsidies to encourage them to find a new way of life. ( To stop fishing is much much more than changing jobs). The charter boats are a different story. Their income is not dependent on one species and they are more flexible in changing target fish. It is very hard to find out the truth about the stocks of cod and haddock. It seems that commercial, political, charters and scientists all have their own interests and they all have their numbers when it comes to deciding what to fish where. One thing is for clear. Most of the cod live on the continental plateau which is completely inside the 200 mile commercial zone. That means that we cannot accuse the foreign fleets of stealing our fish. We do it to ourselves! -

The ones to blame for the cod collapse are really not only the commercial or the sports fishing guys. It is also the politicians who want to get re-elected. One year we went out off Gloucester. By pure coincidence it was the first day of gill net fishing season. The sea was full of plastic barrels and floats all marking the gill nets. It turned out that there are a lot of people in Gloucester, MA who have permits ,often grand fathered in, who will go out and drop their nets. About 5000 of them in all and each a few hundred yards long. The fish never stood a chance and the sea was emptied out in a few hours. In the end everybody is guilty. One good thing for the future is that the Norwegians have figured out how to breed cod fish and they are working on developing cod fish farms in their Northern Fjords. As for "the other species" wolf fish tastes great. Pollock is plentiful tastes good and is a great fighter. Cod has no fight at all and haddock apart from being a very poor fighter has very soft lips so you have to be super careful when you haul them up. I think that we will see that the charter boats will go after pollock and they will go for cod near long Island. -
I like the gyrating interns.

He might have lost his trout. But with a life jacket and having survived the first shock of cold water he would have made it to shore.

For Sale : USA 1954 Evinrude 15hp Antique Motor
rolmops replied to jeaninemason's topic in Classifieds - Buy, Sell, Trade or Rent
These are very nice engines,but..... You will have to run them with with a 1:16 mix (sae30) or 1-24 with TCW3 oil. That is because it does not have needle bearings. It needs a pressure tank and it is very thirsty. They are not very antique or rare. In fact, there are a ton of them still around. ( They are good little engines). If you live near Rochester, you can always go to Bill mayer from Mayers Marina. He was fixing and selling these engines when they first came out. He still fixes and sells them 60 years later! He has all the spare parts! -

Whenever I fish out of Olcot, I make it a point to buy some stuff in the Slippery Sinker and on the way back to Rochester I hit Captains Cove and Narby's.All my trolling rods were bought in Oak Orchard and they all cost less than the big box stores would charge.

Soon enough they will be another sportsy clothing and shoe store, but I did get a few Northern King lures out of there.
