  1. I did not tie it to the hook itself. While making the rig I used to slip a bit of orange rubber from a teaser around the line and then stick the little light stick in. You can get them at K-mart. By the way, where are your teasers?
  2. There used to be a lot,but unlike cod they do not migrate. In the eighties when the cod population was fished into near extinction the halibut population was almost completely destroyed. A small amount survived higher up north in the canadian waters.Later the State of Maine started a repopulation program which, although slowly, is beginning to have some effect. Yes,they are as big as the pacific ones. There used to be a student at RIT whose screen name was "Deaf Fisherman" who wrote a report about catching one a few years ago
  3. I just looked at the picture again and it made me feel a little proud. It was in 2001 while fishing with Kayman Charters (6 person boat) That I pulled out some green 1 inch long glowsticks, the type you tie to your rod tip when still fishing at night, and tied them next to the hook. The captain schratched his head and made some fun of me. After 18 cod within the hour ,he no longer laughed. Now I see it has become part of the standard setup.
  4. That sounds great. You may be going to Cashes Ledge about eighty miles off shore Every time I go fishing for cod and haddock we use only the dropper loop. This is specially important when you are on a head boat with another 50 guys. When you get tangled with other lines (it happens all the time) it is very easy to take your hook and line off and get out of the tangle. The charter boats commonly use 80 pound test and dropper loops. it helps you to have your line in the water most of the time instead of wasting time on untangling. The charter people will tel you to drop your line to the bottom and then bring it two feet back up. This is not because the cod is 2 feet above the bottom,it is to take the stretch out of your line. You should realize that you will be fishing to 300 feet down and with mono you will be hard pressed to feel any bite at all and the thickness of the line makes it drift. If you use 80 pound test braid you will have no stretch and you will be able to see every nibble and you do not have to bring your line 2 feet up. You can also use less weight. Just let your weight sink to the bottom and then jig it back up until you feel your sinker resistance. Braid will help you catch 3 times as much as the others around you. Just be prepared to have to cut your line in case of tangles. Get a spot on the bow or the rear ,there are less tangles .
  5. Garmin has 2 map sets. One is the blue chart and the other is Fishing hotspots. They have a conflict with each other and when you have both in your system, they do not properly overlap and strange things happen.
  6. It will take stained water away and it will be replaced by more stained water.
  7. If you cannot find a manual, there is always Youtube. There are a lot of videos on there showing exactly what you want to do. The best idea is to take it to L&M in Port bay and have Hank do it for you while you watch. He is quite friendly and he will teach you the right way to do it. It is worth the trip and the money you pay Hank.
  8. It all depends on far off to the side you hang the bracket. It is important to remember that the cavitation plate of the kicker can be higher than the bottom of the transom. That will give you some room to play
  9. Herb's fasteners has everything you need advice on how to use it. Aluminum is quite soft and if it is not thick enough rivets will pull right through them and that includes rivet nuts.
  10. Good to see you back on the water. Hopefully next I'll get my poly urethane and I'll be able to pour fresh foam to replace the soggy stuff. If everything goes well I'll join you in another 2 weeks
  11. I was hoping that it would be less. I cannot haul it around with my little truck. I saw your new ride with the big 25 horse kicker over at Hank's today. That looks like a very strong and sturdy rig. May you use it in good health.
  12. The large planer boards work very well, specially when fishing solo. They really help going straight lines
  13. Gil is just about the most trustworthy guy there is to help you find what is right for you. He runs Semperfi fishing. He was a marine fighter plane pilot in the Vietnam war (Phantom)
  14. I own a starcraft Islander in that footage. It is true that they lay higher on the water and because of it they do get pushed a bit more by side winds, but once you figure out the different forces you can easily go in a straight line by compensating against the wind. You can also put some weight in the cuddy. This will make her ride a bit deeper into the waves instead of going on top.
  15. There are always a bunch that winter on the south shore and they will soon be targeted and caught.
  16. It looks very much like a standard starcraft islander top
  17. See if a radiator cap fits
  18. I have a casting net (12 or 16 foot diameter) which was bought 4 years ago. I never got the hang of it. It's for sale for $10. The 2 starters are for mid 1980s 140 mercruisers. They go for $20 a piece. The 2 wiring harnesses are also for the same mercruisers they too go for $20 each. Cornelis
  19. I have a new pertronics 1146A conversion kit for sale. It is a flamethrower coil and the replacement parts that go on instead of the points. I bought it last year but I never used it. The first $50 gets it. Cornelis. http://vintageperformance.com/retrorockets/mercruis.htm All 4 110, 120, 140, 165, 170, 180, 190 All 1146A $85.00
  20. I am interested, but I will have to trailer it a lot. What is the weight of boat + trailer? Cornelis.
  21. And when the sawbellies are gone they will go for whatever else is in the lake, which because of their longevity may turn in a real problem
  22. Strippers? Where? Are they any good? As for stripers, I have often thought about it. It might be nice, but it would cause a lot of competition at the top of the food pyramid. As for commercial value, they are less predictable than salmon, so that would mean another learning curve that might not be worth the bother.
  23. That rig might cause a bidding war!!
  24. there is a picture somewhere on this board of a competition boat with a banana stuck into every rodholder on board
  25. The banana bad luck started when banana boats started bringing the fruit up from central america to NY. These boats often had a real problem with spider, scorpion and snake bites. The critters came on board hidden in the bunches of bananas. Sailors were bitten on these boats while sleeping in their bunks and banana boats soon became very unpopular work places. That's how the banana bad luck thing started and grew into a superstition.
