Did any of you good people ever try to put small orange or red flags on your boards? If you did, would you do it again or is it just a pain in the rear?
-
If you intend to use inline boards instead of big boards you could do that. They just will not allow you to run the heavier lines, but in spring for brown trout with just line and and stick bait they would work fine, except that they will be very hard to see which may cause some trouble with spring brown trout combat fishing.

In 2 years time atomic flies went from 6.99 to 9.99 at gander mountain. That is a 42% price hike and you don't catch 42% more fish

Three batteries is overkill. One battery for the starter and one for the electronics is plenty and then some. What you should get is a pergo battery switch so you can independently charge the battery of your choice while running your main engine. Or whenever you run the main engine both batteries get charged while when you are trolling you seperate the two with a flick of a switch.

When I had a non charging kicker, I turned on my main engine every so often and just let it idle for a few minutes to recharge the batteries. It effectively eliminated the need for an extra battery

kicker advice - short or long shaft, charger without electric
rolmops replied to youngknight's topic in This Old Boat
There are plenty 4 stroke long shaft electric start outboards that charge your battery. They are called Tohatsu. It is the company that makes the Mercury and Nissan outboards. You can buy them factory direct with free shipping. Another less desirable solution is a 2 stroke longshaft with starter and power supply. (for example a 9.9 1979 longshaft electric start Johnson for $425),but you would have an extra fuel tank on board. As for placing it on your transom, you will have to measure the space you have on your transom next to the main engine to see if it fits and still be able to have the engines turn for steering. This would be the best way to go because an adjustable kicker bracket will place the outboard a foot and a half behind the stern. When using the bracket you would have to buy the expensive EZ steer instead of the cheap Sterns connector bar ( one is $25,the other $425). You can either use a pro troll or a regular remote with box next to the steering wheel. As for batteries, you should consider having 2 batteries so one is for trolling and the other for starting. -
My wife says that I use old age as an excuse for ignorance, but she also says that it seems to be exclusive to me and she does not have that problem.

Fish that can live both in fresh and salt water are called: Eurihaline. A good example is a striped bass that can winter over in fresh water rivers in New England (Thames)

All the electronic components in boat engines are double grounded and insulated to prevent any accidental spark . Automotive parts do not have that level of safety precautions. Unless the part is safe for marine use and it says so on the packaging,do not use it on a boat.

A decent reel system seems to be easy with a simple pully from a sailing supply store. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Most pullies are made for at least 1/4 inch line. The line you use to pull your boards is way thinner and because of the movement of the boat ,specially in turns, your line is not always tout. I tried it the first year after I built my home made masts and the line got caught on the side of the pully way too often. This means having to get to where the mast is and rearranging everything only to have it happen again a little while later. The only pully made for this type of line is the Big Jon pully. Your line is guaranteed not to get caught on the side of the pully no matter what. In my opinion it is either the Big Jon pully or stainless steel eye bolts. Trying anything else is trying to reinvent the wheel.

Glass stringers with untreated wood inside. Glass cracks, water comes in and wood rots! Treated wood stringers get wet, dry up and stay good!

In most ordinary circumstances the pvc works just fine, but after a season or 2 the sun will have made it fairly brittle. Sometimes a board gets caught on a floating log which will dramatically increase the drag to one side at which point either your line or your mast (deck connection) will break. I pulled triple board riviera boards with 4 foot 3/4 inch galvanized pipe but never more than 150 pound test line so the weakest point in the system is always the one that is the cheapest and easiest to repair while on the water. As for boards,my favorite is double keeled otter boards. Last summer I accidentally crossed lines with some amish outfitter boards and the most amazing thing happened. Because the line hookup on my boards was much lower than the amish hookup ,my line went under the amish boards and came out on the back without any inconvenience whatsoever

From Wilson to Port Dalhouse is 23.2 miles. You can bring it down to 22.5 if you go really close to the Welland Canal outlet. This is according to the Garmin maps on my gps

This early in the year is too early, but in a few weeks when it warms up a bit there is the Seneca River at Montezuma park. The warmish water of the swamp loaded with nutrients will start flowing out of the overflow pipes into the river and the carp will try to get into the swamp which is impossible for them because of protective fencing in the water. When you go to one of these overflow outlets you will see a solid dark brown wall of carp backs at the surface of the water gathered around the pipe. This wall can be about 30 feet long, 12 feet wide and probably all the way down to the bottom of the river. If you cannot get to that point, there is the boat launch opposite the entrance to Montezuma park just south of the bridge. you can fish from shore into a small creek just south of the launch. Sitting there you will see the carp jumping a small wooden dam in the creek A few years ago,the world champion ship in carp fishing took place in the Seneca river.

Sometimes when I fish alone I put little bells on the tip of my brown rods ,so I can concentrate on steering my rig as close to shore as possible without falling out of line

One is a Grady White the other a Bayliner with a Force engine. The only thing in favor of the Bayliner is that it has an outboard even if it is a Force. If the Grady had an outboard, the Grady would be my favorite.

For Sale : USA Brand New Victrola
rolmops replied to SCUBASLIM's topic in Classifieds - Buy, Sell, Trade or Rent
I once tried to make a "modern version" Victrola using an 18 volt drill with a reel. It worked real well except that when it started rolling up the wire, it gave such a strong initial pull that it jerked out of my hand into Owasco Lake. So if any of you guys pulls out an 18 volt Dewalt drill with a copper spool on it , it's mine. -
I have a couple of 49 super mariners that I used when going deep down shark fishing. They are strong and hold a lot of line. Once you are used to them ,you will see how you can let line out in a very controlled way. They are very good when fighting a big fish who wants to stay down, or hauling up heavy cod. For salmon fishing they are not so great

DEC proposes regs to prevent the introduction of invasive species
rolmops replied to Bigfoot's topic in Open Lake Discussion
In Quabbin Reservoir in Massachussets these regulations have been strictly enforced for well over 20 years and today there still are no zebra mussels in the reservoir. Over there, unless you have a Quabbin sticker you will have to have your rig steam cleaned before you can enter the water
