rolmops replied to Chas0218's topic in Open Lake Discussion
I always buy my electronics at Semperfifishing and because I am a Hull Truth member I get an additional discount. This is the cheapest way to buy marine electronics that this cheap skate has found. Plus shipping Review: http://boatinglocal.com/reviews/si-t...e-sounder.html Hummingbird units: 858c DI Combo 7" color, Down Imaging ......$899. Fishfinder 345c DI, Down Imaging ................$295. Lowrance Elite-5 Gold, Navionics, 83/200KHz transducer .....$445. Garmin remans: GPSMAP 5208..............................$1599. -
Usually 2+2 makes 4. When egos, control issues, or politics are involved it may be any number. If the DEC is short of funds and/or manpower they should welcome any help. It occurs to me that there may be a bureaucratic issue involved which should be easily removable with a bit of political arm twisting. (if you can't beat them ,use them). Let's find out who can make political hay out of this issue and coddle him a bit. That might open some new possibilities, while still not touching Caladonia.

It might be possible and it is not a new idea. The Credit River Hatchery in Missasauga is not for profit and run by volunteers. Working together with the Canadian counterpart of the DEC they produce lots of Steelhead and Atlantic salmon. Come to think of it. I would go absolutely nuts if Powdermills could do Atlantic or king salmon and we'd have an Atlantic Salmon run into Irondeqoit creek. I can see myself drooling at the thought.

Reputable website to buy boat accessories?

To get a good answer on that question and many opinions on different products, you should really go to a website called "The Hull Truth". http://www.thehulltruth.com/ -
The DEC does allow private hatcheries do put their stock in the Lake Ontario tributaries. The Riedman Powder Mills park hatchery has been releasing brown trout into Irondeqoit Creek since forever and it is a privately owned not for profit hatchery run by a bunch of volunteers. Springs are the preferred source because they have a constant temperature and the water is not contaminated with viruses .
-
The dam is right next to the hatchery. The water intake of the hatchery is upstream of the dam and the outlets are downstream out of pipes that are not in touch with the water. Unless a fish can jump into a pipe and swim upstream in the pipe and then go past the screens it cannot get into the hatchery. If you do a Google Earth search, you will see what I mean. I much prefer the idea of an alternative site that does not endanger Caledonia. The Niagara river might be a good place, but another springfed hatchery much like Caledonia with all the same reasons why Caledonia is a great place would be a better choice. I can imagine a hatchery in Moravia in Fillmore Glenn which is well away from the Canal system and has steady temperatures.
-
The hatchery is not connected to the Erie Canal system . It is spring fed (hence the constant temperatures). The springs are a few hundred yards upstream from the hatchery and because of a dam there is no passable down stream connection.

What I understand from the DEC response is that they do not have a way to detect VHS and IPN in the salmon eggs. Knowing this, they do not want to take the risk of contaminating the Caledonia Hatchery which is as yet without any of these problems. Yes it would be nice to have an added source of salmon fingerlings, but it would be terrible to contaminate Caledonia, its brown trout hatchery and its superb cold water trout fishery. I understand the desire to have an additional source, but as long as the DEC cannot detect these pathogens in the eggs, we should go for the DO NO HARM principle. When the DEC figures out a way to make sure that the eggs are clean, then by all means, bring them to Caledonia.

First post and asks for money...... His site is called : "Go Fund Me".

Did you consider leadcore? It is a cheap way to get deep down.

The seize of your rods is directly related to the seize of your boat and the seize of your crew. When I fish the fingerlakes for lakers in a 19 foot open bow by myself I use 10 foot eagle claw light action rods (almost noodles) This softness of the rod allows me to really bend that rod when I set the rigger. That makes for a line that tightens up very fast often put tension on the line right away. That is great when fishing and steering by myself. On a larger boat with at least one other crew member you can use 8 foot rods that are a bit stiffer.

Researchers have to apply for grants. About 13% of all the grant applications are accepted and actually get money rewarded. It would be against the interest of the scientist to drag out research because he will not get additional funds and beyond that ,it will hurt his reputation. If you do not believe this, ask any researcher. The eel do not always return to their own rivers. They go to wherever the currents take them, which can also be Europe. As glass eels they are also very heavily fished by the Spanish who also sell them to Japan. Do you have any idea how many glass eels there are in a pound of eel? This is probably the biggest reason why the american eel is endangered.

Spring Casting,Bottom Bouncing
rolmops replied to reillym's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
I plan to use my 12 foot surf casting rod and cast as far as I can into the restricted zone at the power plant . I figure that with 10 pound line and favorable winds I should be able to get about 300 feet closer to the outlets......... -
Does anybody use these salt water bait rigs while ice fishing for perch?? I used them on white perch and usually I caught 5 at a time, same for sawbellies in summer.

Are you trying to make the dipsey do the job of the downrigger weight with the purpose of having the dipsey make all the noise it would normally make in the water, but once you hook up you don't have the dipsey as part of the line?

Cuomo signs law requiring boating safety courses
rolmops replied to L&M's topic in Open Lake Discussion
I too just did the test and passed. You are right Tom. It does beat shoveling snow and yes there are a lot of interesting things in there that I did not know. I heard something about ones drivers license getting added info embedded like (life time) fishing/hunting licenses. Would having completed a boating safety course also be added to ones driving license? Cornelis. -

You cannot really enforce a rule if the launches are not properly cleaned up to begin with! -
DEC proposes regs to prevent the introduction of invasive species
rolmops replied to Bigfoot's topic in Open Lake Discussion
Anyone who trailers a boat and knows what he is doing, probably does that already. Frankly,I always thought that this was a regulation since forever. The only problem is that there are always ignorant or lazy people and of course those with issues about being told what to do, who will happily keep on spreading invasive species.
