Cuomo signs law requiring boating safety courses
rolmops replied to L&M's topic in Open Lake Discussion
Congrats on passing your test. As for the fires in the dog house, you run an outboard so you're cool. There is a setup you can use that makes sense. It's a heat triggered sensor fire extinguisher that you place in the doghouse. Many soldiers owe their lives to that little gimmick -
Spray foam is not the way to go. The Bayliners of the 1980s and 1990s were spray foamed and these days they are known as bilge liners. You can buy the right stuff to redo your foam at West marine and online. But it needs to be mixed in small quantities and poured while the outside temps are around 80 degrees. I've done a few and it's a pain, but it is the right way to go. Not only does it increase floatability it also strengtens the structure ,it lessens the flexibility, supports the floor and it dulls the sound of the water while on plane (aluminum boats). It is possible to use the blue closed cell insulation boards from Lowes which is easily installed and replaced, but it does not help with structure. Besides ,it is just as costly as the poured material. If you decide to do it, lay some sort of plastic sheeting on the bottom and pour it inside the sheeting instead of right on the bottom. This keeps the water seperate from the foam. This is important because the main reason for closed cell failure is water freezing in small cracks and progressively destroying the cell walls. Once the water gets in the foam, your foam turns into ballast. Any way you look at it, it's a messy job. The good news is that, legally, you do not have to use it in hulls that are over 20 feet long

Thanks, that will help keep the iodine off my fingers!

The cold will kill a lot of ticks that are detached from the deer specially when they drop off the deer in the snow. That should increase the deer's chance of survival.

Thanks for the compliment, but Nick(lakebound) is not Rolmops.Nick is much better at engines than Rolmops. I did rebuild a 140 chevy block over the past few months and its all ready now and in the boat. But if Nick would have seen me commit all the stupidities and mistakes that I made,he would have walked out in disgust or maybe just sadly laughing.

Crows like to roost at night in a place where they can see at least a little bit. You will not find them gathered in big murders where it is pitch black at night. The reason for this is their arch enemy ,the great horned owl. Some of you may have witnessed how crows will harass these owls as they roost during the day. At night, the roles get turned around.Sometimes in the morning you can find fifty or sixty dead or maimed crows below their roosting spot. This is the result of a visit by a great horned owl which with its perfect night vision will fly through a roosting spot of the crows and slashing and pecking will do a lot of damage in a very short time. That is why crows like to roost in large trees with artificial lights nearby so they are not blind sided. As for non migratory geese. In the seventies the university of Syracuse did a research project to see whether the migratory impulse in geese is a learned behavior or an instinctive one. So they tried to see if they could convince geese not to migrate. The first experiment was a failure, all the geese took off anyway. the second experiment was a success. The rest is history By the way,I used to have tame crows. They are very intelligent. You can even teach them to talk a bit. They love shiny things and yes they will try to steal them and bring them to their nest

I know,it sounds weird, but lately my cat has been suffering of over active thyroids. This causes it to loose weight, puke all over the place and be very restless. In short, she becomes a much loved pain in the neck. A visit to the vet resulted in a $350 bill and some quite effective medicine. Next, I did some reading and it seems that one of the causes of this condition is cat food containing seafish which has a high iodine content. (research points in the direction of either too high or too low iodine content in the diet). Fresh water fish contains much less iodine, specially the better cuts. ( not the fatty parts or the head which is typically used for canned cat food). My question is,does anybody feed their cats Lake Ontario or Finger Lakes fish and if so,do they ever have any thyroid problems? I believe that the drug industry is not much interested in healing patients (they would loose income) be they people or animals, but if a change in diet can do the trick, I'm game to try.

Yes, thank you. I don't know about 2000.people without power. Driving back and forth from Buffalo to Rochester on the 23th,2000 is just about the number of power company utility trucks that I saw driving east bound. It seems that the north-east has some very serious problems at this point, although these trucks may be on their way to Canada, where from Windsor through Toronto all the way into the Saint Laurence corridor this ice storm has done tremendous damage

It's called Carhartt and yes you must wear a life preserver. I've heard a rumor that a drop shot bottle of brandy helps keep you warm and makes you care less about catching fish.
-
That sounds like it is time to count your blessings.

Good luck to all you guys on the east end and north from there. Let's hope that it is all just hype.

browns in lake O?
rolmops replied to bondouley's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
I would go a bit different. In spring ,the shallow water along the shore is usually a bit warmer, but that is not neccessarily true for this time of year. You will find 38 degree water a little bit deeper, but you must be close to a creek where there is often some warmer water as well. In my experience it is best in about 40 feet of water cutting through a scum line. While trolling for browns you will probably end up catching smallmouth and lakers as well. -
I installed trim tabs on my 19 footer. Not only does it help my boat up on plane,it also enables me to correct lack of balance at plane because of the kicker that adds 90 pounds to the starboard side

I inherited the Town of Brighton's dog catcher's net and it gives the Beckman a run for its money. The first time my brother in law saw me use it, he finally agreed that size does matter.

Small caliber bullets require great marksman ship because they do very little damage and unless the bullet is right where it should be,it does not stop the target.(exception, very soft, very high velocity rounds like nato 5.56). You wife would be better off with a large caliber lower velicity round, so even if she hits the varmin (or intruder) in a non lethal place it will do much greater damage and likely kill the coyote just because of the much more destructive impact.
