Ouch! Not a good start. Let's hope that this trip marks the end of all bad luck for you this season How did Anthony get out of having to reel those 820 feet back in?? As for the buoy. This Wednesday I saw the Seth Green dropping some gill nets near Olcot. They may have done the same around here. It sure sounds like you ended up getting caught in a gill net. Maybe a call to the DEC can clarify the situation and with a bit of luck get you some of your gear back. (The Seth Green is stationed in Cape Vincent) May all your troubles be behind you. Cornelis

There is an easy and very good solution. Take it to hank! It's only 40 minutes from I-Bay on the 104

Sandy Creek Parking Lot Break-in 5/9
rolmops replied to Traveling Circus's topic in Open Lake Discussion
Do you have to pay to park there? If so,they should at least have a security patrol every so often. -
Good news. The Buoy 30 miles north of Rochester went online! If you go to weather forecast and click on current wind map you'll see her. I love that current wind map. It may be available to professionals only, but it is a very good reason to become professional

It was a beautiful day with beautiful weather. It was great to be with good friends and the fishing was lousy. We went 3 for five. The first one a laker, the second one, a 12 pound king, came in from about 130 down caught on a lure dragged along by a 12 inch paddle and the third ,a 16 pound king, hit a dipsey with a spin doctor and fly designed by doctor Lou . The hits we lost were probably from the sliders. We cruised with a down speed between 2 and 2.5 first north west in 90 feet but later in large circles between 120 and 200. Before we launched I passed by Vince's rig and saw him checking what looked like cut bait in a cooler and I asked myself whether there is a new secret weapon in the upcoming tournaments, or whether I witnessed the beginning of a cod fishing trip, targetting lakers instead of cod. Our trip was cut short by a down pour which thoroughly soaked us. Cornelis.

She does look good. I suggest that you attach a chain to the outboard,so that if -god forbid- she shakes loose off your bracket she does not sink never to be seen again. It seems to happen more than you would think. With those Garelick brackets the kicker ends up quite a distance from the stern. in flat water that does not matter but when it gets to be a bit wavy this causes the kicker to come out of the water so always run it at the lowest bracket position possible. Just the normal 1:50. Don't worry about ethanol, with a 2001 all your hoses are alcohol resistant. Just make it a habit to always refill your fuel tank at the end of a trip. I have run 1957 35 horse engines, a 1964 9.5 Evinrude (my previous kicker) ,1985 50 horse engines and a 1984 75 horse merc on ethanol laced fuel (10 %) and never had a spot of trouble. The problems start if you leave a half full tank sitting around for months with hot days and cold nights.

5-4-13 Shakedown
rolmops replied to LongLine's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Thanks for the report. It will help me tomorrow (I hope). Cornelis. -
That is just like my Islander. In order to keep the 2 stroke mix tank out of the way I made a bracket on the stern above the kicker.

Are you trying to stay away from sharp hooks?

Remember, you get what you pay for. That is why I only have Interstate both starter and deep cycle with a Perko switch system. Lady Ontario is unpredictable and saving money on safety issues like being able to start is not money wisely saved.

If you start listening to the experts you will need to put out another 50 rods ,because that is how many different expert opinions you will get

Is it a 2 stroke or a 4 stroke

I know Silvertip and he knows his stuff. Take a good look at his picture and you will see that he uses ONLY the first battery for 12 volts.

To have the daughter of a New Foundland cod fisherman onboard is just about the best thing any fisherman could wish for. I suspect that she can teach you a trick or two

Too late now,but these engines are very easy to fix. Compared to all the other mostly bad advice that was posted here,it was the best idea to take it to a mechanic. Your problem was that there is no cooling water coming to the engine block.

If you connect the riggers to the first battery in the series you will get 12 volts ,but if you connect to the second one it will be 24. As for wiring up your cannon riggers, The riggers themselves should come with wiring that has a special plug and a second piece of wiring that has the receiving end of that special plug and this should have the fuses installed inline. These plugs are made so they are water thight..From these wires you can run 12 or 10 gauge wire to your battery and you can use wiring cord that is normally used for outside in your garden or the heavy duty yellow construction cable. I buy the yellow heavy duty construction cords which I buy at Lowes and then cut to the size I need. This gives me very good water protection and usually, this way you get it cheaper than when you buy individual lines.

Out of I-Bay
rolmops replied to rolmops's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
There are lots of early kings this year. It may be the result of last year's easy winter which probably increased survival rates and size. -

So we went out of I-Bay at 6 AM for a shake down on my Islander (Engine runs great, thank you Hank!) .The day started with a flat tire right on the ramp. After that was fixed we went east. There was some nice water in front of the bay with good temps but after one small brown and then nothing we went east towards Hedges. The water temp dropped down to 40 and stayed there until we closed in on Webster park where it went up to 45 but by then the place had been fished out. So we decided to go deep and look for lakers. Out we went to 150 feet and set up for lakers with flashers and flies, running at about 1.7 mph. After about 15 minutes and a good swig of beer one of the riggers popped and game was on,but not a laker. It turned out to be a very hard fighting and beautiful female king(Queen?) She took 4 runs and 20 minutes until she gave up. She weighed in at 20.5 pounds and so made up for a too quiet morning. Shortly afterwards the wind picked up and we decided to call it a day. My new Sitex svs 650 fishfinder turned out to be very nice indeed. With the airmar p66 on the transom right next to the fish hawk ducer I had good readings at 25mps. The 600 watt unit is very energy hungry,so much so that I had the main engine running to prevent the battery from going flat. Cornelis

The 2 part epoxy is a bit pricey but it will seal the wood for at least ten years and probably 20. Whenever I rebuild a transom that is the stuff to use.
