Out of I-Bay
rolmops replied to rolmops's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Yes, all the ones we caught today had lost their silvery colors and were turning reddish -
Fishing Report Your Name / Boat Name:Rolmops ============== TRIP OVERVIEW ============== Date(s):8/21 Time on Water:06.00-13.30 Weather/Temp:warm with intermittent rain early on later it turned almost sunny and even later a monster thunderstorm showed up Wind Speed/Direction:about 10 knots mostly from the north west Waves: between 2 and 3 early on down to less than 1 towards noon Surface Temp:72 Location:out to 500 feet nort-east of I-Bay,later at 180 feet in north east of the Genny LAT/LONG (GPS Cords): =============== FISHING RESULTS =============== Total Hits: 11 Total Boated:8 Species Breakdown:kings and one steelie Hot Lure: glow froggy, Spin doctor(nuclear??) with blueish flies Trolling Speed: between 2.5 and 3.4 Down Speed: roughly between 2.4 and 2.8 Boat Depth: various Lure Depth: between 95 and 70 ==================== SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS We left the Bay around six in the morning and went out to 160 feet where we set up at a break line around 60 feet down which proved to hold only skippies. After this we trolled north and east out to 500 feet ,but it was just covering empty space and wasted time.We picked up our lines and set a course for the area in front of Slaters creek, but on the way there in about 200 feet the screen started to show some big fish that were on top of big bait balls so we dropped our lines there and the thermocline was pretty steady at 90 feet until we hit all sorts of currents and breaks at different depths, probably the out flow of the Genny. There the fun started. They started hitting the dipsy with the fly,the copper with a mag glow lemon ice and the glow frog. All were in the low twenty pound range and all were quite red. I think that the staging has started and from here on they will just get closer in. the steel head was a 7 pounder. Around twelve thirty by sheer luck I turned on channel 2 for some weather info and there was a severe thunder storm warning with a storm coming from the west, so that cut our day short. But they are there and they are staging. ====================

3 ROD / PERSON...............PASSED IN BOTH HOUSES
rolmops replied to lyteline's topic in Open Lake Discussion
I second that. So now that it has become legal to run 3 rods,we will see how much more fishing gear will be sold to fishermen who try to run solo with 3 rods and loose a lot of gear because of bird's nests and other small disasters because they have to do too many things all at once. Oh well, now I can at least legally make a mess while trying to do too many things at once. -
3 ROD / PERSON...............PASSED IN BOTH HOUSES
rolmops replied to lyteline's topic in Open Lake Discussion
Those are your conclusions not mine. But I would not at all be amazed if you are right. It is a bit far reaching to claim that this 3 rod rule impacts the entire fresh water fishery of New York State. -
3 ROD / PERSON...............PASSED IN BOTH HOUSES
rolmops replied to lyteline's topic in Open Lake Discussion
That would be nice, but it shows that you think that this Cuomo guy from NY City actually knows about what's going on north of the Tappan Zee bridge. -
Thanks, but it was not me who caught that monster. As for the shirt, whats wrong with selling red socks?

This afternoon I saw a sign advertizing ethanol free 91 octane gas at the Valero gas station on the corner of East Henrieta road and Westfall road in Rochester. Cornelis.

Last week in the Long Island Sound a striper weighing 81.88 pounds was caught. It was weighed in 12 hours after it was caught. If recognized, this striper will beat the 29 year old world record by almost 4 pounds. http://www.onthewater.com/fishing/exclu ... d-striper/

HELP, what does 29n mean?
rolmops replied to john2005's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
The 29 line would put you roughly 17 miles due north of Irondeqoit bay over about 530 feet of water. This is Latitude North 43-29-441/Longtitude West 77-30.769. This area also happens to be a military exercise area -
Speed is the difference in velocity between objects. It is quite possible that your GPS speed and your X4 speed were quite different, yet both correct. One is relative to the ground and the other is relative to the water ,which may have its own currents. Your down speed is only correct when it is at the same depth as your lures.

Still for sale. -
I know a veterinarian fisherman who says a Hail Mary and sprinkles some anisette scented holy water on every person on board before lowering the first lure in the water. He uses "Lunker Juice" on all of his lures. I don't know if it is the spiritual juice or the lunker juice, but he does quite well, although he will tell you that he is "Just Horsing Around".

I have the Blacks on one rigger and the Scotty Power grip Plus on the other. both are nice but the Scotty with the 18 or 24 inch line shows shakers a lot better. The scotty never gets twisted around the rigger cable but even if it does, the clip still works fine and your line is always well away from the rigger cable, but with the blacks it sometimes happens that your line gets twisted around the rigger cable.

berts ratcheting rod holders
rolmops replied to dewey123's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
I just broke a Scotty rod holder that seemed to do just fine for a dipsy diver rod. Plastic is not metal. If it is for a rod that goes to a planer board line you should be fine,if it is an inline board you should not risk the rod, reel and fish -
Fishing Report Your Name / Boat Name:Rolmops ============== TRIP OVERVIEW ============== Date(s):8/7 Time on Water:from 5 till 2 Weather/Temp:foggy,rainy,hot, very humid ,high seventies Wind Speed/Direction:no wind in the morning, later some wind from the north Waves: hardly any Surface Temp: 77 Location:in front of Slaters Creek LAT/LONG (GPS Cords): =============== FISHING RESULTS =============== Total Hits: 15 Total Boated:14 Species Breakdown:1 big brown,5 steelies, 9 kings. Hot Lure: everything worked Trolling Speed: between 2.3 and 3.5 Down Speed: between 2.4 and 2.9 Boat Depth: from 90 till 365 Lure Depth: between 25 and 60 ==================== SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS ==================== I started out in the dark and set up just before sun rise in 90 feet with 50 degrees at about 55 down. Around 130 feet there was bait and I missed a skippy there but 2 minutes later I got a nice big brown. I trolled out to about 360 feet while all the time the thermocline was steady at about 55 feet down. There was a steady slow pick mostly on spoons. There were no takers for the dipsy with spin doctors and fly at 180 feet of wire. The downrigger with a glow frog kept busy ,although nothing big was caught. On the troll back to the south,it started raining .I shortened the dipsy to 100 feet and that started firing too. at 350 feet it was mostly steel head but around 120 feet there were salmon in the top 40 feet. Nothing really big though. The lessons learned while prefishing and observing definitely made a huge difference. On the troll back in,the thermocline came up to 33 foot with all the fish above the 50 degree line. Cornelis

Dead Saw Bellies

There were quite a few dead seagulls around Sodus Point a few weeks ago. We were joking about floating white chickens. -

I use the 20 pound test flea flicker, it has fewer problems than the 30 pound line. Today at the Oak there were no fleas at all.

Piranha on Steroids (aka African Giant Tigerfish)
rolmops replied to BlueEye's topic in Fishing Pictures
How about dumping a few of those babies in the Mississippi river? They will probably make short work of the Asian carp, besides, I would love to see a You-tube of some southern hicks Tiger fish noodling. -
One morning on the Spoonfed I lost 3 fish in a row,so I asked captain Glen what my mistake could be. He told me that brown trout and lakers have a very soft mouth and horsing the fish in or setting the hook hard causes the mouth to tear open. Every hard jerk will make that tear larger and in the end the hole will be so big that the lip will tear open on one side or the hook slip out of the hole. The secret is in patience and steady pressure without rash movements. Kings have a hard mouth and they are much better fit for a hard fight and it is easy to recognize a king when it hits your spoon.

It is a good thing that you made it out of there in one piece. You might want to consider investing in a flare gun, that usually gets some attention.
