  1. The fish hawk people have a nice clear plastic cover for the X4 display screen. It is quite big and it will fit fish finders and the like. It is about $15.
  2. Lately I worry a lot about loosing a fish along with 450 feet of copper because of poor choice in connecting the backing to the copper. I wonder what you all use and what you think about ball bearing swivels with a haywire twist covered with electric heat shrink cover. Thank you,Cornelis.
  3. Great news. Anybody entering the Pro-Ams this year had better get used to being defeated by the Spoonfed, its captain and crew!!
  4. I launched out of the Gennie this week to check some stuff on my boat and made a run to ship builders and back. Both around the river outlet and the creek at ship builders I marked fish but there is a lot of trees and other half submerged stuff floating around where the clear water meets the colored water.
  5. I have used my Penn Senators 112 and 113 with copper and single strand monel wire, mostly trolling/jigging for striped bass in Cape Cod Bay. It is just a matter of getting used to,but the level wind is a lot easier to work with.
  6. It sounds like you must turn sensitivity down a bit. On my 575 which is fairly similar to your 565 I always start at default settings and play around a bit until there is a good reading. At higher speeds, when scouting out an area,I usually lower the sensitivity a bit in order to prevent information overload. It also works a bit better when you just use the 20 degree beam at higher trolling speed and only use the wider beam once you are slowed down.
  7. That is true, but I would happily empty the garbage cans just so the professionals don't have to be bogged down by the daily nitty gritty and instead can concentrate their efforts on the highly sensitive work that they are capable of doing.
  8. With all the budget cuts that are happening all over NY,I would like to help out and volunteer in a Hatchery or some other sports fishing related activity that is in danger of being cut out of the budget. Does any of you good people know of a way to get in touch with any type of volunteering for the DEC?
  9. I love my fish hawk X4,but there is a lot to be said for the Moor Sub troll with the coated cable. The X4 digital has a slight delay(I don't know why) transferring the info, while the Sub troll has a very clear analog display and with proper maintenance of the cable connections it is just as good as the X4. Last years amateur winner of the pro-ams used a subtroll. The one you feel most comfortable with is the one you should buy.
  10. There is a lot of natural gas under Seneca lake. It is famous for "burping",but LPG is Liquid Petroleum Gas and you don't want that to leach into the lake. Any engine that runs on gasoline can easily be converted to run on LPG.In Europe this is very popular because LPG costs about half of what gasoline costs.Around here it seems that LPG costs more per gallon than regular gasoline.
  11. It seems like a good time to find at least one other partner to go fishing with. I used to drive from Rochester to Wilson and fish there. The overall fuel use is about 30 gallons per trip. Sharing this between 2 or 3 people makes it ok. Going out by myself becomes just too much.
  12. I drove by the Genesee river dam in Letchworth State Park today and I have never seen it that high.Probably the other rivers are the same.My guess is that when the thaw sets in the lake level will go up a few feet.
  13. Wow,you guys sound like all for government control like you have in socialist countries. It must be Obama's fault.
  14. I am interested in being an observer. If interested pm me
  15. Improbable though it sounds, Obama wanted to do away with the entire ethanol thing, because it is economically very unsound. During the vote last December about continued subsidies for the Ethanol industry,it was the mostly mid western republican corn producing farmers lobby that pushed it down our throats.
  16. As of December 2010 it is no longer legal to sell ethanol free gasoline in NY state. The latest plan is to increase the percentage of ethanol in gasoline to 15%.
  17. I have tried both the 8 pound Stinger pancakes and the 13 pound torpedoes (A-Tom-Mik).When going anywhere over 2 mph the torpedoes are a better solution. The torpedoes are much better streamlined in comparison to pancakes or balls.
  18. Thanks to all you good people who organized the event. It was great to be able to meet and talk to people who share the same interest in the lake. All in all a great event and well worth the drive to Lockport.
  19. I did some reading on Gluvit and I like the idea. Can you please describe how you used it and what problems, if any, you had while applying it? Thanks,Cornelis.
  20. My information is from the dealer where I bought my humminbird 3 years ago. Obviously I was misinformed.
  21. the humminbird sonars and the Airmar transducers do not work well together at all.First of all, humminbird does not use the 50KHz frequency, but also, the airmar uses a bit more power than the humminbird and it is known to blow the humminbirds. If you want a through hull transducer, stick with a humminbird.
  22. I have used my X4 and my Humminbird quad beam 575 which uses 3 different frequencies together and there has never been a problem. The 575 and the 957C use the same frequencies. The X4 uses a 70 KHz frequency while the Humminbird quadbeams use 200kHz,83KHz and 455KHz,so there is no worry about 50KHz. Just don't put the 2 triducers side by side.My triducers are about 3 foot apart on the transom.
  23. I repaired some leaks in my 1961 Duratech (The same type as used by the CIA in the Bay Of Pigs incident) by getting an oversized piece of fairly heavy aluminum plating and instead of using rivets I used stainless steel truss headed phillips bolts with one side dipped in M5200 and on the inside of the boat nuts(with nylon inside)and washers.Using these bolts you can literally replace every rivet on your boat and repair every leak caused by old rivets.I squirted some M5200 on the plate that I "riveted" over the cracks and today 10 years later it still holds just fine.
  24. Too much to mention, but it is probably several paychecks yearly.
  25. Does that mean that stick baits are a better lure for lakers, since usually we troll at a slower speed for lakers?
