I have always bought Penn gear for just everything in my boat and naturally this includes manual downriggers with swivel bases. Fishing mostly by myself,I find it quite hard to go in a straight line while being away from the steering wheel in order to lower or lift the down riggers. After having seen on Pike Hunter's rig how easily electric downriggers operate I have decided that I really want the same for my boat. Does any of you good people have experience with Penn electric riggers and how do they stack up compared to the other stuff on the market? I use 13 pound A-Tom-Mik torpedoes for weights Any answer and advice is highly appreciated. Thank you,Cornelis.

"American Sportfishing Assn: Oppose lead ban"
rolmops replied to Matthew's topic in Open Lake Discussion
Tom all of what you say makes sense and is generally accepted, but it does not take a lot of other things in consideration. Let's start with the guys who like to make their own weights. They heat up the lead and pour it in shapes and forms often inhaling the fumes. Most people do this outside but some people do it in the kitchen on the gas range......... The journey that lead sinkers make from the mine to the store takes it through stores where it is kept in small plastic bags which are often fingered by children. Then when you take your little kids fishing, they will handle that lead while it is wet. I remember my oldest son play with the little lead ball sinkers and stick one in his nose where it got stuck. We had to take him to the emergency room to have it removed from his nose. We like to take our kids out in nature and teach them how to fish, while at the same time we expose them to lead far more then we would at home. There are many alternatives to lead which deserve consideration. -
"American Sportfishing Assn: Oppose lead ban"

This says it all.It is not about dangerous or poisonous. It is about the money big business makes selling lead products. There are quite a few lead mines in Arizona. Are you willing to defend and help the companies that are poisoning the world around you just because it has been done that way for a long long time?. -

The asbestos industry lobby fought for years to keep using asbestos and they claimed that it did not cause any sickness. They knew that it causes cancer, but it made them a lot of money. I think that everybody knows about the tobacco industry and the way they claimed that tobacco is harmless while their own scientists already knew about the dangers of smoking. Tobacco made them a lot of money. Now the lead industry is using the exact same strategy that the asbestos and tobacco industry used before. They have armies of lobbyists and lawyers and hundreds of millions in dollars to convince lead users that there is nothing wrong with lead. Their desire for profit is a lot stronger than their conscience. -
I jigged and trolled around Ensenora point these last few days.(Its just a few hundred yards south of my cottage). Going down the road from Scipio Center to the lake you will find a fair but not great launch site on the south side of the point. The down currents from the south are good and the fish are stacked. More browns than lakers on the north side and the lakers are closer to the hole and the south side.

Needed, complete carb for a 1965 9.5 Evinrude
rolmops replied to BOBBY D's topic in Classifieds - Buy, Sell, Trade or Rent
http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=438822 The link I gave you has a large number of salvage yards.Every one of those guys can help you and not just with carburetors. If you want to stay close by, Bill Mayer at Mayers Marina can probably help you.He is on the Webster side of the Irondequoit Bay outlet. His number is 323-1010 -
It may be as simple as having to trim your prop a bit higher and it may be as bad as having your foam waterlogged making for a very heavy boat. Start by trimming up and checking your bilge pump.Do you have one up front?.Then remove heavy gear from the front end. Also see if you can catch a ride on a similar boat and see how it feels. If none of these things make a difference your foam may be waterlogged.

I caught one of those last year at the mouth of the Gennie and it looked like a striped bass hybrid.

A slip bobber has the line running right through the center and not on the side of the boober. When you rig your line you first put a light weight bead on the line that is slightly bigger that the hole in the top of the bobber shaft that your line goes through, then the bobber goes on the line after which you can put the hook on. Now above the bead you wind a small piece of thread around the line and make a tight knot around but NOT in your line.If done right you can move this wire up and down your line, but it will be tight enough to stay in place if you don't pull it hard. This is your bobber stopper.I like to use dental floss because the wax really makes it go smoothly through the eyes of your rod.If you want the bait to be fifteen feet below the bobber you just slide the stopper fifteen feet along your line and reel the line along with the knot back on to your reel. The bobber and bead should slide freely along the line. When you cast, the bobber is very close to the hook, but when the line is in the water, the bobber will allow the line to slide through its center until it is stopped by the stopper knot. Here is an example: http://www.catchingcrappie.com/slipbobber.html http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid ... 224492285#

The real question is:Will they be in Lake Ontario and will they bite twice as much and will they fight twice as good?

If you want them,Stinger has 15 and 24 pound pancakes. The 24 pounders are $60 a piece. Here is where they sell them. http://www.auroralitestackle.com/stingerdivebomb.htm I used to run the pancakes but the A-Tom-Mik torpedoes run much better than the pancakes.

Happy Birthday Hank. May you reach 120 years of age in good health. -
You had better keep that place secret,or some Japanese troller will drop 30 miles of gill net in the area and destroy everything there in the name of profits.

You should get in touch with Cremer. He lives in Horseheads and he has a very mean looking dog. As for making them work. Not a good idea. Not only would you have to do everything they do all over again, you would also have to repair the damage they cause while working and worst of all, they would stake out your property and come back later to take whatever they fancy.

I know that Cuomo likes fishing for striped bass. -
You do not have to buy and try.Look at this: http://www.propmd.com/t-propellerexchange.aspx This is only one company that does this, there are many more. Many marinas with service stores will let you try different used propellers until you find what you need.Courtesy obliges you to buy from them as well, even though they are usually a bit more expensive.

Last year I caught a few 30+ inchers in November in the eastern arm close to the eastern shoreline in 14 feet of water on the edge of the weed line with live bait. I presume that it holds big ones. I have no idea if there are any muskies.

It's been fun but its time to move on......

It is my feeling that in a few years the urge will be back and a boat will not be far behind. Good luck on your new adventure. -
Your wide open throttle rpm should be closer to 4400. Lower rpm at WOT means that your engine is working too hard and cannot get up to the ideal rpm for WOT. The 17 pitch may be a good choice but you can also drop down to a 14 inch with 17 or 19 pitch this will give you less of a hole shot but it will get your rpm up to where it should be. Here is a website that will give you a lot of info about props. When you open it it seems like just advertisement but when you scroll down you will find a sea of information. http://www.propline.com/Propeller-Gener ... _Wheel.pdf

Just got back from Keuka Lake This time I tried something different.Fishing the North end toward Penn Yan I put out the otter boards and in 20/30 feet of water, roughly at the edge of the weed line and over weed islands, I pulled live bait (mooneyes) on 3 colors of leadcore with 30 feet leaders and an 8 inch steel leader at roughly 1 to 2 mph about 50 feet off to the side. I caught nothing spectacular but in 3 hours it gave me 9 pike and 4 bass. Does anybody else here ever troll for pike?
