  1. I am toying with buying either a Sub Troll,a Depth Raider or a new type Fish Hawk. What in your experience is the better gear and what gives the most bang for my buck? Thank you for your help and opinions, Cornelis.
  2. IF I learned anything from you guys this Sunday it is that I have to be outside the harbor on the lake well before six in the morning.that way I can just follow "the fleet" to the rich grounds which were much closer than my wild goose chases. Just Fishin, I will remember your Well Craft. It looks like a very well set up rig.
  3. So that's where the steelhead went. Nice fishing, you must have enjoyed. We must have come in together.I'm in the Sylvan with the rods up front. Cornelis.

Fishing Report Your Name / Boat Name:rolmops ============== TRIP OVERVIEW ============== Date(s):8-16 Time on Water:6am-1pm Weather/Temp:hazy and hot Wind Speed/Direction:light Waves: none Surface Temp: 75 Location:14 miles north east of ibay due north of route#102 LAT/LONG (GPS Cords): N21 W 19 =============== FISHING RESULTS =============== Total Hits: 8 Total Boated:5 Species Breakdown:Kings Hot Lure: spin doctor with pink and blue dots with mountain dew fly Trolling Speed: 2.3-2.8 Down Speed: unknown Boat Depth: 450 to 500 Lure Depth: 90 feet ==================== SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS I decided to go after the steel head that Reeljerks had mentioned on these coordinates only to find out that they were long gone. There was some bait around at 80 feet so I lowered a spin doctor with a mountain dew fly and sure enough, after only 10 minutes it fired. It turned out to be a 23 pound king.A few minutes after it was brought to heel there was another hit and it went on that way for almost 4 hours. All the fish were well over 20 pounds.Except for one that I could not revive everyone was released. After 10 in the morning thing went dead. This sure beats washing lures ====================
  5. Fishing Report Your Name / Boat Name:Rolmops ============== TRIP OVERVIEW ============== Date(s):8-14-09 Time on Water:noon until 5 pm Weather/Temp:85 Wind Speed/Direction:east light Waves: around noon very light, around 5 a nice chop Surface Temp: 75 Location:north of Ibay LAT/LON:N 16/23 w 31/35 =============== FISHING RESULTS =============== Total Hits: 0 Total Boated:0 Species Breakdown: Hot Lure: Trolling Speed: 2.3/2.9 Down Speed: Boat Depth: from 60fow to 500 fow Lure Depth: just about everywhere ==================== SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS Started out in 60 fow, lots of bait lots of fish and it stayed that way till about 90 feet.I threw everything at them including 6 inch storm shad(soft plastic) and the kitchen sink. I went out north at 6mph and did not mark any fish until about 350 fow. From there on until 500 there were scattered fish at 50 feet down that did not hit and lots of fish on the bottom, but I did not bring my deep sea gear. Next time I will fish either the sun rise or the sunset, but not the midday sun ====================
  6. Although it is possible,it may not be wise to take a 15 footer out on lake Ontario. You may want to consider going for lake trout and Landlocked (Atlantic) salmon in Seneca or Cayuga lake.I do a lot of lake, brown and rainbow trout fishing in Keuka and Owasco lake and although admittedly it is not as exiting as Lake Ontario it also is not as dangerous.
  7. I would start with the cheap things first.Take the cowling off and put the muffs on when it is dark start the engine and check to see if your plug wire grounds out and sparks elsewhere toward the engine.Buy a spark tester in a car parts store put it in the line and see if the spark is ok.replace the plug. As for the sputtering engine, that is a fuel supply problem. The easy thing to do there is buying a can of seafoam, pour it into the fuel tank and take the boat for a nice long ride (1/2 hour) that should clean out the jets and other passages. The problems you describe sound like small maintenance issues and not one big problem so the best way to go is by getting the maintenance things done and only afterward look for a possible big ticket item. You can also go to a website called: http://www.iboats.com. once you are in there go the boating forums and choose the mercury forum. You can register and ask your question.Although the website is commercial these forums are strictly non commercial and they probably are the best engine trouble forums you will be able to find I am a member of these forums and so is Longline.
  8. I tried a W spoon but all it got me was a water boarded lamprey.
  9. Sorry to hear about your probe. It is an expensive toy to loose and without it you miss out on a lot of important info. Thanks for that move to 500 feet.I followed you and it got me into some nice fish
  10. Fishing Report Your Name / Boat Name:Rolmops ============== TRIP OVERVIEW ============== Date(s):8-8 Time on Water:7.30 am-2 pm Weather/Temp:nice Wind Speed/Direction:east/calm Waves: early 2 feet, later calm Surface Temp: 69 Location:14 miles north of Ibay LAT/LONG (GPS Cords): 31-32 =============== FISHING RESULTS =============== Total Hits: 4 Total Boated:4 Species Breakdown:1king,3 bows Hot Lure: early on dreamweaver ss kevorkian later spin doctor pulling nk 28 green and white dots Trolling Speed: 2,2-2.8 Down Speed: unknown Boat Depth: 565 fow Lure Depth: 90 feet ==================== SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS Early on there was some action on the screen in 160 fow and right on the surface where I picked up a small bow then it dried up and I saw some boats far out north.I joined them at 500 fow and trolled north with the rigger down at 90 feet. The king hit and gave a dancing show.It was a bit tricky to bring the other line in and in my exitement I brought the rigger up way to fast and bumped the rigger pole hard enough to break the wire and I lost a nice 10 pound stinger pancake weight. That is the price for being alone in a boat.Anyway, it turned out to be an eighteen pound fish so I can't really complain. The other bows were in the 6 pound range. ====================
  11. Aluminum does not have the same density that water has and so far there are no transducers that will go through aluminum and give a reading.Fiberglass on the other hand has no problems at all and the transducer can be a through hull.
  12. I have seen them in Gander mountain and in the store on route 104 near the wind mill in Webster.
  13. Congratulations on your catch. God willing ,it was your father's spirit who guided this fish to you.
  14. I own a 19 foot riveted aluminum Starcraft in MA that is exclusively used in salt water and knock on wood,so far no problems at all.Take care not to get to deep into the water when you launch because the salt will eat up your brakes(not next week but 3 months from now). Also make extra sure to have enough grease in your trailer wheel bearings because if salt water gets in there it will destroy the bearings. When you are done fishing, hose down your rods and reels and then wash them with a light soap and rinse them again. The salt will get into everything including your tackle boxes so just take what you need and leave the rest. Make sure at what hours you can lauch or retrieve your boat. A lot of launches are closed for 2 or 3 hours around low tide because the water is too shallow. If you fish anywhere close to lobster pots do not use down riggers or you will loose your balls. Stripers are federally protected. You can catch them inside the 3 mile zone state waters anything over 3 miles makes them an illegal catch.
  15. Rolmops : Fishing Report ============== TRIP OVERVIEW ============== Date(s): 7-24 Time on Water: 11.30 am-4.30 pm Temp/Weather: 75°F and sunny, overcast, rain, Wind Speed/Direction: south west Waves: 1-2 Footers Surface Temp: 69°F Location: North west of Ibay 80 to 120fow LAT/LONG: 31/34 =============== FISHING RESULTS =============== Total Hits: 6 Total Boated: 6 Species Breakdown: 2 Kings, 1 Bow, 3 Lake Trout Hot Lure: (NK28, White Spindoctor with dreamweaver ss lime icicle Trolling Speed: 2.1 /3.5 mph Down Speed: unknown Boat Depth: 80 to 120 Lure Depth: 80 ft 57ft ==================== SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS =================== Came out late because of engine trouble on the big engine but for reasons I don't understand it fixed itself,I suspect fuel pick up in tank. I picked up a few fair lakers in 70 feet of water and then as I got close to the east side of the sewer line a few hundred yards south of where it splits up I found this hole with great structure. It drops from 80 to a 100 in no time and it was full of fish all roughly 20 feet above the bottom. The first pass through there gave me my first king,a 15 pounder, and the second pass got me the second one which was slightly smaller. They must have made a lot of noise down there because the third pass showed an empty screen. Later on my way to 120 feet I picked up a nice steelhead which will be on the table tomorrow. There was a very strong deep down current going east By a quarter to four a dirty looking cloud started delivering lightning, thunder and rain so I packed up and went back to shoot the bull with old Bill Mayer at the marina. Tomorrow I will tear the fuel pump apart and check the fuel supply system for air leaks.
  16. The impact driver works like a charm every time. They are available for less than $10 at harbor freight.
  17. When do they start to disappear? I don't know when they start to disappear, but it seems they they cannot grab on to the flea flicker line. My idea is that the fleas are active in the warm upper layers of water and they are blown around with the surface water. With strong southern or south eastern winds, the warm flea inhabited water is blown away from our shore and replaced with colder water from down deeper which does not have that many fleas, until it warms up and then the fleas come back. These spiny fleas reproduce by cloning themselves lots of times when the environment is ideal for them.Only towards fall when the light becomes less and the water gets colder do they reproduce sexually and die.Their eggs sink to the bottom where they wait till next year
  18. I replaced my lines with flea flicker (20 #) and I have not seen a flea since.
  19. Wait, that monster was just a warm up,next year you'll catch an even bigger one. Congrats on your win and more power to you for being able to tame that monster!!
  20. (Your Name) :rolmops ============== TRIP OVERVIEW ============== Date(s): 7-17 Time on Water: 5pm-8pm Temp/Weather: 70something overcast, light rain Wind Speed/Direction: north east, very light Waves: Calm Surface Temp: 66 Location: north east of Ibay LAT/LONG: did not pay attention =============== FISHING RESULTS =============== Total Hits: 7 Total Boated: 5 Species Breakdown: 2 Kings, 2 Lake Trout,1 atlantic Hot Lure: green dream weaver/lime icicle/kevorkian Trolling Speed: 2.1-2.8 mph) Down Speed: one of these days Boat Depth: 150ft -90ft Lure Depth: 80 ft ==================== SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS ================= I ran solo for just a few hours this evening and a great evening it was.Started out at about 150 feet but apart from some big lakers the screen was dead.I dropped one ball down to 150 feet but they were not interested. So back to shore I went and over 110 feet of water there were some bait pods with company so I set the riggers at 70 and 85. This brought in the 2 lakers who were not on the bottom but traveling with a bait pod. Both were decent fish in the 12/14 pound range.I trolled up to 90 feet and there both my riggers fired at almost the same time.and both had fish on.I lost both and gained a big bird's nest which took about 10 minutes to unravel.I like to think that they were both very ,very big fish. I stayed in that area for another half hour and in that half hour the riggers fired again but this time I got lucky and one after the other I caught a very nice looking young king, then an atlantic and to put cream on the pie a big king. All of these hit on the same rigger and dream weaver. It made for a beautiful evening on the water.
  21. trailers are very simple and any of your local auto repair shops can take care of them. The inspection can be done by any registered repair shop that has a licensed technician.
  22. Sorry to hear that your trip was cut short. There will be better days! I hope your newcomer friend had the decency to puke over the side and not on your nice clean deck.
  23. (Your Name) : Fishing Report ============== TRIP OVERVIEW ============== Date(s): 7-10 Time on Water: 6am until 1 pm Temp/Weather: sunny and balmy Wind Speed/Direction: southeast Waves: 1-2 Footers Surface Temp: 69/70 Location: around the dumping ground and at the 200 fow LAT/LONG: 31 34 =============== FISHING RESULTS =============== Total Hits: 2 Total Boated: 2 Species Breakdown: 1 King, 1 Bow Hot Lure: green dream weaver ss, purple ss dream weaver Trolling Speed: 2.1/2.8 mph Down Speed: unknown Boat Depth: 200 ft and 80 ft Lure Depth: 54ft and 35ft ==================== SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS ==================== We left Ibay with a southern breeze behind us and headed towards the river. In 80 feet of water the screen lit up and we dropped 2 leadcores one with 7 lengths and the other with 5. After about 10 minutes a steelhead took the higher one and we boarded a nice five pounder. He was served with white wine and asperges in a cream sauce about 2 hours ago. A short while later we decided to join a few boats that were in about 180 fow at the 34 line, we dropped the riggers and set the leadcore again but the only fish around was right on the bottom,so we moved into deeper water and then something interesting showed up on the screen. At exactly 54ft (over 190fow)there was this long row of fish, one after the other so we brought one rigger up to that exact depth and within a minute we hooked into a nice 2 year old salmon. We boarded and released it but after that we had no more hits. We went back to the dumping ground approaching from the west and for about 3 miles at around 80 feet there was fish on the screen ,but none took our offerings. All in all a beautiful day on the lake.
  24. I use a Humminbird 575 with triple frequency and I believe it is the best invention since sliced bread. It gives you an idea of what is happening to the sides and not just one or two relatively narrow beams underneath. This gives great information specially when you run leadcore or copper wire. When you see fish to the side you turn a bit here or there and your line goes right through the fish.
  25. You had best check out first what you can reasonably tow with your vehicle and then see what trailer comes with the brakes that you will need, either surge or electric. Lake Champlain and lake George both have a lot of fairly high hills to cross until you see the water.... If you are limited in your tow capacity then Aluminum would be your best bet. Big outboards tend to do damage to transoms when they get banged around on the roads even with transom savers. You might want to look at some I/Os,besides inboard/ outboard engines do not easily get stolen. As for hard tops, they give you the luxury of being able to lock things up and you will not have to drag everything back and forth all the time. A hard top combined with an I/O gives you the potential of heating and air conditioning. Just my 2 cents.
