  1. A transom saver takes the weight of the engine off the transom and makes it rest on the trailer. The trim support protects the trim hydraulics but not the transom. That is fine when you don't trailer your boat long distances, but for long distance trailering you need a transom saver.
  2. A protective piece of rubber is maybe $10. A dropped outboard and broken transom is $20000+ You do the math.
  3. It might be the made in China as opposed to the made in USA thing, but I'm not sure if that is the case with these rods .
  4. I have three 1102 8.3 footers and two 1101 2 piece seven footers all brand spanking new. I'll see if I can dig them out and see what I want to part with. I did not not know that the 8.3 footers are hard to get. The 2 piece 7 footers are really hard to get
  5. 19 strand is just as flexible as most mono filament and extremely thin for its weight. On top of that it has very little water resistance. Now any leadcore or copper will continue sinking if you let out more backing. the thinner the backing the better the sink rate (unless it is some big highly water resistant backing), but in the case of weighted steel and 19 strand the sink rate remains the same. 20 feet per hundred feet. 200 weighted steel + 200 19 strand, will put you at 80 feet down. 7 strand steel wire has far more resistance in the water because of its diameter and its shape.
  6. One solution is a bracket, but how about an extra long shaft 6 horse kicker? In your picture you have a tape measure showing a length of 25 inches which is what an extra long shaft is. That way you can just flip the engine over forward when not in use. As for 4 stroke, if your main engine is a 2 stroke , a 4 stroke kicker means not only extra weight but also requires extra room for another tank. That adds another minimal 3 gallons of extra weight (24 pounds) while with a 2 stroke kicker you can just splice it into your main tank. (unless the oil for your main engine is mixed in at the carburetor inlet). You may want to look at a sailing website where extra long kickers are often advertised.
  7. According to the NOAA we will not get any decent freezing weather until the middle of January, while at the same time the water coming into the lake from rivers and streams is plentiful and in the low forties. These things put together may mean that the winter die off of alewives (and salmon) may not be as severe as other years. Could it be that winters with lousy ice fishing opportunities are in fact good salmon survival winters? I can't help thinking of that winter six or seven years ago that (at least in Rochester) was no winter to speak of, but the salmon was of spectacular size in the spring LOC derby and Niagara County Pro-Am first day had every participant boxed out by 7.30 in the morning. with record size fish. If the winter cold does not rear its ugly head, we may be in for a record summer, where we o.d. on salmon and go pan fishing for relaxation. Besides , if there is no big snow pack to melt off , there may not be so much crazy high water You guys have a happy and peaceful new year and let's work to make fishing a great joy again. Let's all raise a (virtual) glass, give thanks for last year and drink to a blessed and plentiful 2020
  8. I have a 1993 Johnson 9.9 short shaft. It has been stored since 2001 and has seen very little use. It has electric start and has the remote control setup (no tiller). I went over it in November to make sure it is still in prime condition. The price is $750 PM me if you are interested.
  9. There is one problem with an extra line to the side on a sixteen footer. Unless it is a very light setup with minimal water resistance you will find that your boat will try to change direction to the side that the extra line on the side is on. The extra line will act as a sort of rudder and the lighter the boat (aluminum?) the more pronounced it will be.
  10. If it is flexibility of depth that you are after you can try a smaller dipsy diver which will allow you to let it out farther while staying shallow, or go with 200 feet of weighted stainless wire followed with 19 strand stainless. (both are torpedo products) 100 feet of weighted wire will get you down to 20 feet, 200 to 40 and for every additional hundred feet of 19 strand you will go another 20 feet down. A levelwind convector 45 with line counter will serve you well, while the rod can be the same old dipsy rod you have already. Good luck !
  11. All of this goes to prove that sports fishing is not an exact science, but an experimental playground where opinion and wishful thinking make for lots of daydreams and great fun.Keep at it !
  12. I used to run 20 color leadcore on Keuka Lake. Not one but 2 lines and it was a royal mess. About half the time the lines would get tangled up. Besides, you get to the point where the water resistance of the line neutralizes the the sink rate and it does not go any deeper no matter how long your lines are. If you think that a copper line bird's nest is bad, try a leadcore bird's nest and you will long for copper. What I did find is that when using live bait, the trolling speed becomes much less important and greater depth can be achieved by slowing down and speeding up. This really works great with leadcore because the large diameter allows for slow sinking which gives great presentation.
  13. Right now the season tickets for the LOC Derby are $20 off for a few short days . $100 for the 3 derbies.
  14. I know that this sounds weird, but at this point in time, it is not the Feds that are protecting the cormorants. It is a decision that was made by a local judge about 4 years ago that forbade the culling of cormorants in any other way than addling the eggs. This turned over a decision allowing the culling of cormorants. The town of Brighton, NY had a severe problem with Canadian geese and in order to solve this problem, the town organized a volunteer group that went out to addle the goose eggs. They were armed with swamp gear (hip waders), umbrellas and spray bottles with some sort of oil that sealed off all air from the embryos after it was sprayed onto the eggs and the goose population was drastically reduced. Maybe just possibly we can gather some volunteers for a few Saturdays to go to cormorant colonies and addle their eggs. It is not as exiting as shooting them, but it does get the job done. If any of you good people have contact with DEC officials we might even get their support.
  15. The amount of salmon that is being stocked becomes less important every year because natural reproduction is on the rise all the time. We probably are near the tipping point where even if they stop stocking altogether the salmon population will hardly be impacted. As for the smaller size compared to some years ago, that happens in the hatchery as well as in the wild. A lot of the hatchery fry is descendant of the "wild" salmon that hatches freely in the river. It is an evolutionary thing. The smaller the lake, the smaller the fish, unless outside stock has been introduced and that outside stock usually adjusts its size after a number of generations. It is not really reasonable to expect pacific ocean size to remain in a relatively small lake Ontario. After all, in the pacific there is almost always another place to go to or food will come to you while Lake Ontario has more limited fresh supply of food (compared to the pacific). Anyway,a happy Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa or whatever you celebrate in the season.
  16. Be it far from me to call this "not sportsman like", but I do understand what you say. Your suggestion would surely separate the boys from the men. '
  17. Sorry for being a bit skeptic, but I see all that great technology and I wonder if the hunter also gets better. Could you reach the same amazing results with an old but very precise carbine with a 7.62 bullet at 400 yards? This modern -sometimes- laser guided equipment is great, but isn't the hunting sport more about learning about the prey and honing the senses of the hunter, than it is about making that technology guided shot?
  18. $500 can probably get you a fantastic used Furuno 585
  19. It is only bolted on if it is the original one. When you remove the old engine, it will give you a chance to check the wood that is inside the lengthwise aluminum stringers. It will help you very much if you first remove the engine in addition to the gear box. In addition , I very much suggest that you use a cherry picker with chain or straps going to the far port and starboard ends of the transom with big eye bolts screwed in the top of the transom. That way, you can keep the pulling pressure up while nudging the edges up and out
  20. I only fish the lake, I would not know where to start in a trib. But I do know of two ways to improve the trib fishing. First would be removal of barbs when fishing catch and release and second is to stop showing pictures or writing reports or just write negative ones. Steelhead survival will increase and the need for stricter regulations will decrease. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United

  22. The Niagara River is a river, not a funnel. When the water level in a river goes higher, it transports more cubic feet per second. In a funnel it would stay the same. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  23. No not Trump. Its the commies.
  24. The real reason for the exceptional high water is the huge amount of rainfall that fell in the upper great lakes area over the last few years. It takes about 2 years for that water to travel from lake Superior all the way down down to Lake Ontario. It will take another one or two years for that water to make it here, so the high levels will stay with us for another one or two years even with the maximum possible water allowed to go out. Commercial interest may have something to do with it but not very much. The main culprit is the weather that the North West of the USA has seen in the last few years and the time it takes for that incredible amount of water to make it here. Can you recognize climate change when you see it? We are in the middle of it and chances are that it will get worse. My suggestion is to get rid of lake property before the lake will get rid of it.
  25. Why not just add a walleye division without canning the steelhead?
