Oswego 7-27
rolmops replied to rolmops's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Most of the marks were around 75 foot down, and as the sun came up they went another 10 feet deeper. My advice would be to stay under the thermocline but , whenever a bait ball shows up, to go to the lower part of the bait ball no matter how deep or high it is. This works well with 11 inch flashers and meat -

Hardly any fleas at all -
We left the dock a little past 5 with the moon nowhere to be seen. We set up in a hundred feet of water and that proved to be magical. We did not have a chance to set a full spread because we hooked into 4 good sized kings almost at the get go. Finally by 6 we got our spread completely in the water while there were 4 kings in the box as well. Then it was quiet until around 9 o'clock when things went crazy. Within 20 minutes we were hooked into 5 fish and had to keep the lines apart. Somehow through amazing team work we netted all 5 fish without any tangles or other F--ups. For me this is a first quintuple, but it made me realize how multiple year team discipline pays of. We had a great time and this a trip that we will tell stories about.

There are four different towing packages offered, that may have something to do with it In my case the variance has to do with me probably buying some other stuff at West Marine when I renewed my towing insurance this February. I'm sure the exact price for the same service is the same all over. Before you sign up though, you should inquire whether the service is offered in your area. Lake Ontario is covered, I'm not so sure about the Finger Lakes.

What pound test is it ? -
It probably is legitimate, but aimed at the Hong Kong area market and it sometimes happens that a google search makes it pop up in the wrong parts of the world. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app

32 years is nothing for a whaler. Those rigs are built to last a hundred years

Whaler, Did that happen with your new ride?

I've had different experiences with towing people in. Once I was thanked profusely and had my fuel tank refilled. Another time the towed people just walked away without even saying thank you. Yet another time while towing somebody in, I became an involuntary witness to two guys screaming at each other in front of their wives and children about who was to blame for the boat not working as it should. A friend in need is one thing, a stranger , I don't know. I pay my yearly Boat USA membership which for $150 gives me on the water towing to home port and road side trailer towing to my home. And that is hard to beat.

That was a good idea. It was not a good time for 19 footers to be out there. We were fishing in the trough while being pushed sideways by a 19 knot wind. We had to get around on our knees for fear of banging into things. The occasional 6 footers that were mixed in did not help. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app -
We went out around 5.30 in windy weather and as we left Wrights Landing the first boat had already turned around and came back in. It did not seem very bad and in fact quite normal weather for a Sodus Pro-Am weekend. So out we went. We set up in a hundred foot of water and after about 15 minutes we had our first bruiser. Within an hour and a half the tally was four. The waves however were over 4 foot at that point. So we decided on one more and then go in. We should have known better. 5 minutes after that decision I got a hook embedded in my thumb while trying to clear up some lines. At that point we decided to go back in. On the way back, with the help of a good pair of pliers and a few choice words I got the hook back out and by 8.30 we were back on the dock. We'll try again next week.

Flies, the biting kind!!!

We saw about 5 of them between I-bay and Braddocks Bay on Friday. Most of them over 40 feet of water , but one was over a hundred feet and way out. We toyed with the idea of trying to fish close by, but with land came hungry mosquitoes and we had enough of an issue with flies, so we decided not to.

Port of Rochester or Sandy creek launches open?
rolmops replied to letsfish2day's topic in Open Lake Discussion
At first sight you would think so, but there are a lot of launches and launch services that get paid with this and the towns that have launches spend way more money on the building and maintenance than they get out of it. The truth is that we are a very small special interest group. Places like Olcot or Oswego with very good marine services are the exception rather than the rule. -

The truth is that a boat launch is not cheap to build, and it’s not a very good money maker. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app -

Go to I-boats and search for reviving old outboards. It has all the tips you need. You can also just google "reviving old outboard"

I just read your report again and the cracked fuel lines and the electric choke do point at a possible other cause. Fuel lines not only crack outside, but also inside and tiny rubber particles are swept along in the fuel towards the carburetor where they can cause trouble in 2 specific spots. The first is where the fuel comes into the bowl. That is where a little inlet control needle is held in place by the float. the second place is the high speed needle hole. I write this because the electric choke bypasses that whole setup of the carburetor and they enrich the fuel mixture straight into the horn of the carburetor.
-
Sometimes there is a tiny leak in the fuel line, small, but big enough to suck air into the system, it causes a shortage of fuel supply to the carburetors because it sucks some air instead. double check all your connections and hoses. As for speed, that may be a trim issue. If you can, do a compression test and see if the cylinders are within 10 % of each other. As for the fuel pump. It may be that the membrane is eaten up by ethanol or just gone leaky because of old age. Membranes are cheap ,so is a $20 fuel pump. They usually are at least twice that price. If you decide to take the fuel pump apart to replace the membrane, be very careful with the tiny springs and places where they are in. The suspects are false air and pump membrane.
