  1. The lakers still have to recuperate from 2 years of intensive fishing by charters because of the lack of kings. That is a slow process. Any charter boat captain (specially those on the east en) who is anti laker should remember that they probably saved his business a few years ago. So please do not curse the lakers. Also going with the wild succes of this year's salmon fisheries it seems to me that the DEC fish people are quite spot on and the "stock more salmon crowd" not so much. To me , the DEC has the science to back up their decisions while the anti DEC arguments are mostly based on opinion and short range business interest. All of you anti DEC Science folks should take a trip to Gloucester and have a good look at what politically and business motivated decisions have done to the fisheries.
  2. 20% sounds like a lot, but natural reproduction will probably be up this season, because the spawning salmon are well fed this year. The controlled stockings are less significant every year. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  3. I did the course together with my son who at the time was 12 years old and used to be my constant fishing companion. ( girls changed that). I did another course online that is available through west marine. This one is way more thorough then the classroom course which was presided over by a volunteer non professional. Although both courses taught me a lot, I do not believe that they improve boater's behavior. They will only teach those who would try to behave the proper way to begin with. For the rest they would be an inconvenient delay in getting on the water, where their other character traits would take over anyway. The best way to teach these rules is by imposing fines comparable to traffic tickets and /or jail time for outright dangerous acts and DWI . Just ask some Canadian boaters how much improper behavior on the water can cost.
  4. No, I am not turning this on you. What I am saying is that if it is peaceful and quiet fishing that you desire, you do your best to stay away from potential a$$hole concentrations.
  5. So you went fishing in front of a state park that has a ton of recreational boaters on what is possibly the last nice weekend of the year. You were right about complaining, but it was not wise to pick that spot on a weekend. There is what should be and there is reality. For a relaxing fishing trip you should take reality into account and act accordingly.
  6. What really matters is the placement and quality of the transducer. That is the part that actually registers all the things that you can later see on the screen. So I would get the best transducer I can afford and combine it with a monitor that can handle all the information. ( a Furuno)
  7. We are all just prisoners here of our own device
  8. This year was great everywhere. Don't get used to it. But you may want to consider additional parameter. How far do you have to run on the water to reach the fishing grounds! On that one, Oswego out of Wrights Landing is only 5 to 10 minutes. Another pro for Oswego is the very large area inside the Break Walls. You can actually fish protected from the waves and be succesful inside the break wall area.

  10. There is another reason why I do not like the goods that are shipped from China. It is the postage price. The Chinese businessman buys a stamp to pay for the shipping and the cost of it is cheaper than mailing local in town in the USA. That is because the "Last Mile " cost ( the inside the USA shipping) is carried by the USPS while they never receive any compensation for this service. This is because of antiquated postal legislation on international mail. What it means is that the USPS is in fact subsidizing mail order imports from China. This is unfair competition.
  11. They may be cheaper, but the local guy usually has the better service Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  12. Same here. that MMSI # is for free and it is a must
  13. I would not worry about the waves as much as I would worry about the traditional labor day weekend combat fishing in the general Salmon river staging areas.
  14. sounds to me that the bilge pump grounds out when it gets wet or hot and creates a false ground sucking all the juice away from the system. Disconnect the bilge from the system and see if that solves your problem
  15. Price drop. $200
  16. Pm me so we can make arrangements
  17. I travel a lot between Oswego, Moravia and Rochester, so meeting places in that triangle can be arranged.
  18. I am located in Brighton (Rochester) ,no they do not have mounts,I bought them a few months ago with the intention to use them for walleye fishing ,but I never got around to it. They came as you see them in the picture. I presume that they were rebuilt, but before I got them.I do have one old mount that I can throw into the deal.
  19. A have for sale a set of cannon down riggers in good working condition. They come with one 8 pound down rigger ball, one Michigan Stinger 10 pound pancake, one Chamberlain line clamp, weight retrievers and terminal clips. $150 for the pair
  20. I disagree with the need for a tandem setup. The 22 foot sylvan is made of aluminum and weighs less than 3000 pounds even if it has an I/O. So a good single with surge or electric brakes will do fine.
  21. The weight and horse power restrictions on boats are decided upon by a set of calculations provided by the US coast guard. If you google information about backyard boat building you will find these calculations in he coastguard backyard boat building manual. Insurance companies use these regulations when they work on claims. So your boat insurance agent should have the information you need as well.
  22. Yes, about 4 feet difference. Also a different weight distribution with much less weight on the tongue , which would make for an interesting drive. In order to drive safely you must have at least 80 pounds of weight on the tongue It is not a good idea.
  23. I believe that the horse power rating for a 1995 boat is at least partly based on engine weight. 2 strokes do weigh considerably less than 4 strokes. Before deciding on a larger 4 stroke engine you might want to consider finding out what 4 stroke engine your boat is rated for. An engine sales man is not the right person to ask.
  24. spoons at 70 and 50 feet
