That goes to show that there are interests in the lake beyond fishing. My main worry is that big business is getting ready to make pipelines in order to pump water out of the lakes and transport it to California, or tanker ships that will load up in Lake Ontario and transport the water to Saudi Arabia. That last one was tried before and stopped at the last moment. But it's business so its good for America and some of us might dream about the trickle down effect happening in Lala Land.

Maybe, but let me enlighten you. A Carnegie Mellon is a research grant handed out by the Carnegie Mellon foundation. In fact, less than a week ago the U of R (Meloria!!) was rewarded one million dollars for their humanities research. You will read about it in the papers not so long from now.

Sold / Closed e-z steer for sale
rolmops replied to obxfish's topic in Classifieds - Buy, Sell, Trade or Rent
Is this the one with 2 spring loaded sliding bar holders or does it have just the one? -
Does anybody apart from Gator and me actually know what a Carnegie Mellon is?

Whoever voted for him is responsible for the destruction and pollution that will soon be with us. I wonder how many people working for government agencies and research facilities will soon be added to the unemployment lines. Gator, I wish you lots of strength trying to get another NHA grant. It is a good thing that Carnegie-Mellon is still around. The Lakes will loose out for sure. The biggest winners are China and India because this is where the great and inventive research will be happening.

You might want to save that picture. With the intended 17% cut in the NOAA budget, this service might very soon become a thing of the past.

If I did not have the Penn available I would have gone that way as well.

I use a Penn 345 level wind. It holds 250 feet of weighted wire backed by 300 feet of 19 strand and another 400 feet of 80# power pro. The full 300 did fit, but it was close. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United I did color mark the line every 50 feet.

Copper will go farther down as well, because of the weight of the 19 strand wire, but not as much. That's because copper wire isn't as tightly woven as stainless and its resistance in the water is a bit higher. All sinking rates of leadcore, copper and stainless are measured with the high end of the material at surface or just below. The sinking will continue as more backing is let out until the point where increased resistance of the backing (amount let out) and /or the speed of the line relative to the surrounding water column. (not boat speed) will cause the line to stay level or even come back up higher. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United

Marine plywood is nice and expensive. In this case any bcx plywood will do. The B and the C are the quality level of finish on each side and the X stands for exterior. That means that the glue that is used to glue the plies together is water proof so the plies do not come apart. If you paint the boards and the edges with a good oil based base a couple of times and then finish it off with rustoleum oil based paint in order to seal it you should be ok. The side that you want to go against the shell surface should not be painted. Instead you must paint it with fiberglass resin (with hardener) and also put some resin onto the fiber glass itself. You can bolt it in as well. The resin will penetrate into the wood and act as a glue between wood and fiberglass. If you do it that way,you will not have to deal with vibration noise.

The restriction of gobi as a baitfish is the result of an effort to stop the spread of invasive species. I remember reading in the regulations that whenever you catch a gobi you have to kill it and it cannot be returned to the water. Anyway, they are a bit tricky to use because they do not have a swim bladder and they are very poor swimmers. Most of the time they lay on the bottom and they move swimming upward and sinking back down a few feet away from where they started. Not a very good pattern for trolling, but a great idea for jigging .

Bottom paint is supposed to come off. The idea is that the growth on the hull is not actually slowed down ,but minuscule layers of the bottom paint come off together with the growth that gets onto the bottom. The end result is a clean bottom ,but the paint has to be replenished every so often. If your boat is kept on a trailer year round the process will be much slower and you will not have to repaint as often.

When the water out of the creeks starts flowing in at a good clip it will create pockets of warmer water near shore that will attract bait. you will find the lakers mixed in with the browns chasing the bait. In my experience it is the best time of year for fishing with live bait with spin casting methods.

Herring
rolmops replied to cabezon99's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
We mostly use strips of cut bait/herring and troll with it sometimes by itself, sometimes with a flasher . I sometimes use live herring and troll for lakers at speeds of less than 2 mph. Maybe the system you you used in Puget sound works here just fine. Try and let us know. -
Best place to buy tackle online?
rolmops replied to fishmaster13184's topic in Tackle and Techniques
S&R is a great little store. A family store as well. Many of you guys do remember the dad and maybe 12 or so years ago the son took it over. I try to buy everything I need from there. Just remember that it is a strictly cash only store. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United -
Big John Otter boat the best planar ?
rolmops replied to muskie magnet's topic in Tackle and Techniques
The shape of otterboats rounded. I didn't really value that until one day two springs ago, my boards and those of another boat crossed each other. The line of the other boat just slid underneath my boards, the boat dipped forward and the line slid under through. Boards with bolts sticking out or with sharp angles will catch the rigger line and cause havoc. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United -
The 19 strand wire is light enough to stay in the air, although if the distance from the boat to clip gets very long it will drag a bit more than mono. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United

There may be a problem with the wire getting damaged by the clips. Mathew of Torpedo recognizes this and suggests using rubber bands.

I have patched the steel with a combination of 3 barrel crimps, hay twists in between and heat shrink (3/32) covering it all. It still goes through the levelwind guide easily. With 1/8 heat shrink it tends to start hanging up.

Did the mall security people come to take you away?

knots in steel wire I did some experimenting with the 19 strand wire and how to connect it to other line. The first thing I did with a new 1000 foot 19 strand roll was a line test. I took a big empty reel and while reeling the wire from one reel to the other I let it run between my fingers. That was a smart thing to do because I found three damaged sections on a brand new $43 roll of 19 strand line. I cut them out and retied the line. I knotted it back together with tiny spro 50 pound test swivels using a mix between a palomar and a hay twist covered with 3/64 heat shrink tubing to prevent the twists from untwisting. So far so good. Although I am not at all happy with the poor quality control on the 19 strand wire.Next I connected the 19 strand to the weighted steel line ,using an 80 pound barrel swivel that will easily go through the guides. First I tried the knot with the heat shrink tubing that Torpedo has on its website, but although the knot is strong and holds well it has a problem going through the levelwind guide on my penn 345 levelwind. So I just used some barrel crimps (three in a row) with twisted wire in between and covered these with 3/32 heat shrink tubing. It holds well and goes easily through the guides. That is as far as I got. I'll inform you guys how it holds up with a salmon on the other end.

That is exactly what I thought, but between the weight and the very thin diameter of the 19 strand it does exactly that.

The torpedo weighted steel line comes in either 200 foot or 300 foot rolls. the 200 foot goes down 40 feet and the 300 is 60. If you use 19 strand 30 pound wire behind it, the sinking rate will remain the same. So 200 feet of weighted steel plus 200 feet of 19 strand will get you down to 80 feet and so on. Four hundred feet of copper is usually quite a job to reel back in, but this setup is lighter and easier to reel in. On the other hand, the fish will fight harder because they don't have to fight the heavier copper.
