  1. I used them for years with twilly tips. Never a problem. The only thing that made me change them out was the length(10 feet) I now use 8 foot Taloras
  2. I have Penn Senator 112s and Penn Senator 113s would that be your size?
  3. The Chinese government has been doing exactly this idea ,with mosquitoes. Every few weeks they release several millions of genetically altered mosquitoes in order to fight ZIKA in their areas. They are actively mating but sterile. So far this is very successful and far less dangerous for the environment than chemical spraying.
  4. It sounds very good. Specially the efforts being made to prevent unintended side effects. Maybe some experiments can be done in a few lakes that are not connected to any other lakes,so the experiment is insulated and can be controlled.
  5. Maybe it's time to give Hank a call. He can fix cracks if they aren't too big. You may just ask him too repair the engine. That way you will not have to discover any more problems. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  6. Are there any good parts on the hull? How about the trailer? Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  7. Going over this thread, I see a few comments about kings successfully reproducing in the Genny . To the best of my knowledge, there is no such thing. Did something change or are people misinformed? Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  8. It means that you are absotively and possolutely a mollycoddling abhorrentor. But Molly loves to be coddled so it is all good
  9. Which is it? Have you ever gone over the speed limit? Did you ever drive home with one too many in your belly? Did you ever ignore a do not trespass sign. If you have not than you are holier than an angel. I hate seeing all that good fish going to waste and I would much rather see it being used. This is not comparable to stealing cigarettes ,because cigarettes are not on the verge of dying and rotting. There is no good solution within the way the laws are written today. As for law enforcement ,please let them do it where it matters. In the small tributaries that are being raped as we speak. But wasting precious resources on dying salmon? That is really not worth the effort.
  10. My point is that we should not be holier than thou. As for breaking the law. When rich people intend to break the law, they change the law to make sure that their crimes become legalized. Poor people do not have that luxury. But I agree that breaking the law must be punished. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  11. Yes it is illegal and yes the DEC is absent although they know that it is happening. But salmon do not reproduce in the Genny and all these pounds of fish that otherwise would just die and rot are at least being eaten (in sushi ?). Anyway,my point is that we who call ourselves sports fisherman are very self righteous about the "ethics" of the sport because we stick to certain rules in our pursuit of chasing and often killing these very same fish while not even eating them. We often talk about the economic value of our fishery. What happens down at the falls also has economic value. For the inner city people it is an economic windfall. This yearly event at the falls should not be compared to the yearly rape at many tributaries done by people who have no respect for a scarce resource that is threatened by their misbehavior. The good part of this event is that for now at least the salmon have come back in large numbers. Were they all Chinese and Russians and Others (aliens?)? I think that the DEC should be down there not so much to stop the taking of fish but to make sure that these people at least have paid for a fishing license. Ok now take up your pen and condemn me
  12. Thanks for the heads up. My GPS is hard wired into my dash so there's no problem there. Anyway, with 9 mph southern winds and 70 degrees there is not much chance of fog
  13. The spring points to a seal. What worries me is the fact that this seal is not doing what it is supposed to do and seals do not usually fall apart unless they are bone dry or have dry rot. That does not often happen if the part where the seal is was greased
  14. It looks like part of a broken bearing. The outdrive is giving you a warning of more broken parts not yet discovered.
  15. I tried to launch at the I-Bay launch this morning ,but it looked very iffy. So I drove to the Genny where the launches are always deep enough and from there we turned west. This proved to be a waste of time so we picked up and went east until we ended up east of I-Bay. There the browns were cooperating. We fished in 50 foot water with 2 dipsies (46 and 70) 2 riggers (27 and 43) and 2 8 color cores off the boards at about 2.5 mph. We used dream weaver super slims with superman lures, the riggers with stinger scorpion and chicken wing and some other bright colors. 8 browns later we called it a day. Probably the last day this year. Next week I'll be fishing under the Golden Gate Bridge.
  16. I may be wrong ,but I was left with the impression that they do not know that what they do it is illegal.
  17. It is coyote or dog. The small molars in the rear behind the large molars are typical for coyotes and dogs. The final answer should come from drlfc also known as doctor Lou
  18. I remember that
  19. Finger Lakes Marine Repair 4918 Tellier Rd , Newark, NY 14513 (315) 331-7749 This is the address and phone of Gene. I have no interest or opinion about him. I do know that he usually has some stuff.
  20. When you go to another outdrive it should come with the gimbal housing and transom plate. I do not think that the hole in the transom is any different. As for different or larger engines..., Your boat was constructed with certain weight and power limitations in mind. Changing to a heavier engine is not a good idea because you will have to change other things to accommodate that. As for ford,OMC used them a bit. Just ask yourself why mercruisers are still around and liked. The only other popular one is Volvo-Penta. As for $250.. you get what you pay for.
  21. If you are changing the engine you should try and get away from all that older material. The 181 inch (3 liter) 4 cylinder engines of the 90s and early 2000s have a higher compression rating and electronic ignition. They are more fuel efficient and very trust worthy. Do try and stay away from the 4 cylinder 165 and 170 engines because they are prone to trouble (of the expensive kind). Having to change the outdrive is not a bad thing. there is not a whole lot of common sense in trying to keep going with a unit that has all the accumulated wear and tear of 50 years. You have all winter to get a good thing going. I do not usually promote Harbor Freight gear, but given the price and the fact that you probably will use it only once or twice, you may want to buy a harbor freight cherry picker and engine stand to make working on your engine easier and safer.
  22. There is this guy called "Gene" in Newark who has a little store selling boat parts and used engines and outdrives which he takes out of old boats. He often advertises on Craig's list
  23. If you guys keep on going that way ,poor Hank will no longer fit in his own boots.
  24. For the past year ,my wife complained about my trailered boat stinking of gasoline and she was right. It was the sweet smell of 2stroke. I thought it was maybe a leaky connection or the fuel tank getting over pressurized and the fumes escaping. Just last week I finally decided to investigate the matter. It turned out that the float pin in the carburetor was worn out and allowed gas to pass through, effectively also flooding the engine when first time starting but not enough to flood the engine again within ,say, an hour. When I cleaned the carburetor I saw signs of leakage. I replaced the float and the pin and now there are no more fuel fumes. That was an easy solution to a stinky problem.
  25. Go with the DEC proposed cuts for now. The DEC has the most information about the state of the lake. But at the same time increase the lamprey treatment and start working seriously on mussel eradication instead of watching them increase and wringing our hands.
