I had side scan on my previous fish finder. It was great when fishing next to a steep upcoming bottom and real close to shore (100 feet). When using it in the middle of the lake my readings turned into snow because the reading became indefinite together with surface clutter. In short a mess. This was a humminbird unit.

What really amazes me is that we talk about the engine as if it is just inside a car. This thing is in a boat and if it sets up or worse, there is no side of the road to move to. Instead, the people inside the boat are dependent on other people's good will to go out (possibly in bad weather)and get the passengers out of trouble.

Fall Browns
rolmops replied to Sam N. Slayer's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
It is not that simple. During this time of year when the lake may be warm or freezing ,dependent on the wind, it is important to fish in front of a creek that flows strong enough to attract browns planning to spawn and creates some scum lines in the water which are marking vertical temperature differences. I get most of my fish in 40 to 50 feet at about 35 down. As the season advances the larger browns will go into streams while the smaller ones will stay in the lake. It is important to release these 2 or 3 pounders so they can become 12 pounders. Most of my catches are on scorpions -

still fishing?
rolmops replied to Chinook Chaser's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
This is my favorite time of the year. The crisp morning air and the steam rising off the water. The fishing is quiet and fairly close to shore. It is mostly browns ,but small mouth will hit the lures and so will the 6 pound lakers. For me it is all catch and release this time of year because the water is cold enough for the lakers to easily survive.Weather permitting I will fish until thanksgiving. -
Usually government agencies are secretive about their research results so it can be used for whatever political interest there may be and to insulate the agency from political pressure from special interest. Given the DEC's yearly budget and their willingness to show the results and admitting the weak spots in their information gathering, it is clear to me that the DEC has no political agenda and that they are truly working in the interest of the health of the lake (not necessarily in the commercial interest of groups or individuals). Thank you DEC for keeping your eyes on our environment.

I have an idea to build a speed and temp probe
rolmops replied to bruceleogould's topic in Open Lake Discussion
"Just get a Fish Hawk and spend your time and energy fishing instead of monkeying with some cobjob." Whether it works well or not is a mute point because of the logistics involved, but it sure helped me understand the basic principles of a speed and temperature probe. It shows that it is not a great new technology but just a different use of existing technology while using different packaging. Besides, it is because of people puttering around and trying different ways to get something done that we can use a chatroom today. Keep up the good work!!! -

Wanted WTB kicker motor 9.9 to 15hp what do you got?
rolmops replied to dpiazza22's topic in Classifieds - Buy, Sell, Trade or Rent
It is a 9.9 2 stroke. It's been sitting on the boat for long time without me ever using it. Ever since I put a smaller propeller on the main engine I can troll at 1.9 while running 800rpm which is some years ago. -

you might want to look for a 19 or 22 starcraft islander or a Sylvan Offshore ( exact same boat out of the same factory but with a different name) There are outboard driven ones of the size that you want and they are aluminum and cost anywhere between 3 and 5 thousand.

You have a pm -
I can understand why you may think that yours has the wrong sequence, but in a distributor the #1 cylinder is usually at the right hand bottom, while pap's picture shows #1 at the right hand top. At the same time it really does not matter where you put the #1 in the sequence as long as you make sure that the spot on the distributor that you use is where the ignition at tdcd -8 for #1 is at.That the engine fires up is a sign that the sequence is correct, or it would have backfired if it started at all. Also, the rotation is clockwise.

Ah, the smell of 2 stroke in the morning....

2 strokes will always accelerate faster than a 4 stroke. This is simply because it is every second stroke a power stroke against every fourth stroke a power stroke. Add to that the extra weight that a 4 stroke has compared to a 2 stroke and the 2 stroke will get you out of the hole faster than a 4 stroke. If you are willing to give up some hole shot you will be rewarded with great fuel savings with a 4 stroke. There is also the pollution that a 2 stroke produces compared to the relatively cleaner 4 stroke. The e-tech is the best of 2 wordls. That is why e-techs are so popular (and expensive).

I would measure this Johnson shaft. The older Johnsons had a 23 inch long and an 18 inch short shaft. If yours is 23 inch long and on a 15 inch transom you are not only filling up the back of your boat with water, but the length of the shaft also creates a lot of unwanted resistance that lowers the performance of your boat.
