  1. I did some trolling under a full moon with fluorescent lures. Mostly, the bait was higher up and so was the salmon and specially the lakers. I remember catching a laker on a junk line with a #9 rapala. The problem is that when the bite dies down, so does your motivation to stay awake.
  2. Given the proper shape, cast iron would not have much more blow back, even if it is bigger. A lot of the blow back is created by the downrigger wire. I don't think that anybody really did any in depth research on downrigger hydro dynamics. Heck, wouldn't you love a self propelled downrigger weight?
  3. For convenience, you should first introduce yourself,
  4. We use cowbells fishing for striped bass, but mostly as a decoy for blue fish. we lower the cowbells to about 20 foot down and 60 foot back. The blues will attack them and that gives us a chance to lower our eels down to 40 or 50 foot without having them destroyed by the blues.
  5. I have seen perch for sale in our local Tops Supermarket.
  6. I would bring a bright flashlight and a pointy knife and crawl into the boat stern. Clear away whatever it is so you can see the inside of the transom. See if you can stick the knife into the wood with ease which is bad or if it is hard which is good and look at the wood to see if there is any visible rot. As for the outside, try and move the engine back and forth and sideways. If you feel a lot of give, you have a rotten transom. The 1985 starcraft Islanders are 19 footers, the 18 footers are Holidays. If this one has an outboard it probably is a Holiday
  7. I have been looking around for a canvas top that tacks on to the top of the front window and is supported by a fold up frame. The one I have right now is really for a 22 footer and it is starting to fall apart. Do you guys know of any laying around gathering dust or about anybody making them and if so,what would be a ballpark price? Thank ,Cornelis.
  8. You can get marine grade plywood at the carpentry shop in Schoens Place in Pittsford. But for a floor it is a waste of money. Any 3/4 inch plywood that has been painted a few times with regular or epoxy paint will do fine.
  9. Make sure that you fit under the bridge
  10. I use Interstate on my boat and my cars.
  11. I have a few Penn Senator 113 and 114 reels. They are big and strong. They do not have line counters which is fine for leadcore, but they are not level wind reels. You will have to guide the line with your thumb. The reels are quite big and you should count on putting a lot of backing on them.
  12. you can connect a waterline and run the engine. The thing you do want to do is a block pressure test in order to find out if there are any hairline cracks in the block. You should also get in touch with Hank (L&M) . He makes cracked blocks whole again.
  13. I like the Penn 330 level winds
  14. I have fished both the east and the west side of the Islands at the entrance of the Seaway when my daughter in law attended Queens University in Kingston. The east side is usually a bit better in early spring. I think that it has to do with the water being protected from the cold water hitting the west shores as it passes into the St. Laurens. What I mostly remember about Wolfe Island is "swoosh swoosh swoosh".
  15. You will learn a lot about the boat by checking the attitude of the captain. For the past 2 years we had a charter boat in the dock next to ours that looked like something the cat dragged home and so did the captain. A few docks down there are three charter boats in a row that all have close to twenty years of heavy use on them. but the captains spend a lot of time taking care of their "babies" and they are rigs to be proud of.
  16. Let us all post negative reports or no reports at all. Maybe some bad pollution rumor including fish with cancerous growths may lessen the pressure. Heck ,we should post some negative stuff about the health effects of our fish on a Russian or Ukrainian language website. Add to that some cooked up stories of fish poachers being badly beaten up and thrown in the freezing water by local vigilantes and we may make a difference.
  17. Ok reality check: This is the volume of a 10 foot by 1 inch hose V = 3.14 × 0.5 in × 0.5 in × 120 in =94.2 cubic inch. that makes about 0.4 gallons. Not 1.5 to 2 gallons. Ask any fire fighter to do the math for you and they will come up with these numbers.
  18. Yes,and the next guy to use the pump gets your expensive gas
  19. Thank you very much for that piece of information.
  20. Sounds like serious cabin fever. After last years pitiful salmon harvest,we really do not need big commercial interest to make a bad situation worse.
  21. Yes ,some kids will do anything to have "fun".

    Ditch Bag

Given the high improbability that you will ever need one,I strongly suggest the addition of a six pack or two.
  23. Pequod, I think you may want to check the way you put up that picture. I just looked at your Alaska/halibut trip, but it opens up to practically all your saved pictures.

I would add one item for daylight signaling. Floating blue or green smoke signal flares/grenades. We always used them to bring med-evac choppers in because they were the best visible markers in daylight specially in bright sunlight
  25. I just read this again and I am wondering. Usually a propeller is marked with the diameter first and the pitch last. In your case that would mean that you have a 17 inch diameter and a 15 pitch. This would make for a work boat pushing prop. Most Penn yans would have a 15 inch diameter prop.
