[PDF]safety standards for backyard boat builders - New ...newboatbuilders.com/docs/backyardboatbuilders.pdf U.S. Department of Transportation. United States Coast Guard. SAFETY. This PDF has some good hints as to what HP goes with what boats. But to give you an idea of weight. A 1990 2stroke 25 horse Johnson is 115 pounds and a 2015 4stroke 25 horse tohatsu is 157 pounds. I would not worry overly much about the extra 42 pounds. Moving your battery to the front of the boat will solve your problem. Moving your gas tank is less advisable because as it empties out it will change the balance. So the best place is in the back.

Let's hope this is the start of a great project that will lead to trolling for salmon in the bay when it's bumpy on the lake. It should also lead to great volunteer participation. Just think of it. You come to feed the fish and you get a beer for free for every time you feed them. The first case is on me!

On December first I went to the Captains meeting at the Irondeqoit Fish and Game Club to find out what if anything can be done to improve fishing for next season. Apart from a group of Captains and guests there was also a respectable number of DEC people including Steven Lapan. Steven Lapan informed us about a lot of the work the DEC has done this summer and came up with a lot of numbers. He also explained about the man power problems during peak stocking season and the limitations that it brings with it. He told us that the Salmon River Hatchery is staffed by six employees who maintain the hatchery, breed and feed the fish and on top of that also transport and stock all the fish into the different places around lake Ontario and other stocking spots. During peak stocking season these people do put in a lot of effort and hours. At one point I had a chance to ask if it is possible to add some pens in Irondeqoit creek or I-Bay. Steve Lapan answered that for 2016 there was no chance of doing this because only a certain number of fish is stocked yearly into the lake and deviating from these numbers may upset the balance between bait (alewives) and predators (chinooks). But then he continued and explained that according to their creel reports the pen fish are double as likely to survive to the point where they come in to spawn.compared to fish just stocked in the rivers. Bearing this in mind it is impossible to add pens for 2016 because that would likely upset the bait /predator balance. However it is a possibility for 2017. Which is just as well because we would need time to organize additional pens. I was left with the impression that the DEC fishing department is a slow and lumbering organisation not because they are not active ,but because they are extremely careful about upsetting the natural balance in the lake and all their actions are based on the information gathered during any given year, which can only be used in the next year and comparing this to additional information already available from other years. Do not expect the DEC to make sudden moves or change direction without proper scientific research.

Without a life jacket in 39 degree water you survive for maybe 10 minutes. With a life jacket you survive for up to 2 hours. Of course it is your right as a free man to die in freezing water and have a lot of people come out and search for you thereby risking their own lives while you are already dead. But why not be free and alive?

It does not look like very much water at all. dependent on how long ago these lower units were last changed,it may just be condens water. It may even be left over gunk from previous oil changes that used a different color and 90 weight oil. I would let it sit a few more days and if it does not seperate anymore it probably is not water but a different older oil.

Starting a new company to winterize boats
rolmops replied to talosboats's topic in Introduce Yourself
it seems a bit late in the season to start a winterizing company, but that is not what bugs me. It's your questionaire! You ask a lot of questions that have nothing to do with winterizing and quite frankly are non of your business. Are you sure that you are starting a winterizing business? To me it feels like a phishing expedition! -
A good place is the south end of Owasco lake in the harbor in front of the restaurant. Many people feed french fries to the carp and they hang around there hoping for hand outs.

That is completely dependent on your payload, trimtab position and weather . Presuming that you run a 350 with 260 hp, your rpm seems a bit low. But it could be because of your timing setting or the cleanliness of your hull. There really are too many things that play a role. Besides, sometimes people prefer to over prop or under prop in order to get a better rpm for trolling.

There is a switch on the market called a Perco switch. That would be your simple solution

That one sure had a some traveling under its belt. I sometimes wish that the ones that migrate be left alone and the ones that settle in the local shopping center ponds and sports fields be hunted

Some thoughts on Perch fishing etiquette and other "issues"

I always thought that the only place in NY State where commercial perch fishing is legal is on Seneca Lake Is it legal elsewhere as well? -
How do you know if a transom needs repair or replacement?
rolmops replied to Todd in NY's topic in This Old Boat
If your boat is on a trailer, raise the outboards and grab the center outboard and try to jerk it back, forth and sideways. and the same with the kicker. If you feel some give or see the transom bent in and out or sideways then you know that it is time to replace wood inside. Most transoms have never been painted by the boat maker. that is why they rot. Replacing one is quite simple ,but time consuming. You will have to remove the engines, everything that is screwed into the transom and all the bolts that hold it. Get yourself a big piece of cardboard (bigger than the transom). Now alone with some winch like thing or with a human winch (friend) work the old transom out of its spot ( a crowbar may come in handy) and ,once removed, lay it on the cardboard. Now you can draw the outline on the cardboard. As for replacement materials. There is a liquid material on the market that is expensive, but you can just pour it into the transom housing where it will harden and your new transom is ready to go. The other way is to buy 3/4 inch 8 ply plywood and glue and clamp two pieces together in order to make a standard transom thickness one and a half inch thick piece of plywood. I like to use the marine grade plywood, but it has to be a good quality material and not pressure treated.Marine plywood is very solid and has very few holes in the ply materials. There is other material on the market that is just as good. Now using your cardboard, draw the transom shape on your plywood and cut it into the measurements you need. Lower it into the transom housing to see if it fits right. Now just take it back out and seal the plywood with (quite) a few layers of paint or glass it in. If you intend to glass it in you may want to use 5/8 and 3/4 inch plywood. This will give you a bit more play so you can do heavier glassing. I found though that the material tends to soak into wood and does not really increase the thickness, unless you use 3 or 4 coats. When everything is ready to go back in, lower the by now quite heavy new transom into its place ,but make sure that there is an inch or two on the bottom that stays open so the bottom of the transom will not constantly sit in the bilge water. Now it is time to drill new holes using the holes in the aluminum frame and screw the whole thing back together. When that is all done ,start taking out some bolts at a time and seal the inside of the newly drilled holes so no water can penetrate into your new transom through those holes.I used m5200 but others glass those holes. When you have finished all that you may look at the bottom of transom and wonder why you did not do a fix on all those pesky little holes which you drilled in the bottom of the transom for the transducers and whatever else you installed there. I know that I did. But in order to prevent that, you can just buy some aluminum plating , cover it with m5200 and while the transom wood is not yet in place just stick the aluminum plate(s)inside the transom housing to cover those holes. It helps to take pictures before during and after your project. Good luck. -
Both democrats and republicans want to get rid of the ethanol subsidies, but neither party wants to quarrel with the farmers lobby which is powerful indeed.

New carbs are good, buying used ones is risky. The other possible way to go is having a professional rebuild done.

I have one that I use for leadcore. It is a good reel. The only problem (for me) is that it does not have a line counter.

I would disagree about using closed cell rigid foam boards. It leaves far too much in between space where the rigid material does not reach. I used poured (not sprayed) in foam on my Islander with the difference that instead of pouring it onto the aluminum I put in a few 1/2 inch pieces of PVC pipe on the bottom and the bottom was covered with 6 mil heavy plastic. The foam was poured onto the plastic all the way up to the floor boards which were also covered in plastic. That way the closed cell foam was sealed inside plastic and drainage existed under the foam. Mostly, the stiff structure of the poured foam gives a lot of support to the structure of the boat. Using the boards makes you loose structure support.

I just realized that this may increase the survival rate of the fingerlings because they will be in a nutrient rich environment in which they will learn to feed on the naturally occurring food sources while still being fed pellets, and their transfer to the big lake will take longer but this time is in a nutrient rich environment.
