Rich said: " I assumed (and wrong)about the lakers.. I was informed about the hatchery and funding problems on lake trout.. Also was told their reproduction (LT) rate is low which is shocking to me.. It was said the lake management is trying to bring their levels up to a sustainable level with the increased pressure and lower survival .." Rich About 12 years ago, there was a National geographic article about Lake trout being the ultimate test fish for PCBs. They are extremely sensitive to PCBs. where usually contaminants are measured in parts per million (ppm) lake trout fry will die when there are even only a few parts per billion (ppb) of PCBs in the water. The only place where good natural laker reproduction takes place in the Great Lakes is in northern Lake Superior.

Both are proper. I just cannot get used to the use of "that" instead of "who" where the subject is a person and not a thing.

It does not quite sound like proper English, but I came up with :Work is a disorder for people that want to go fishing

The lake invironment changes all the time. Yesteryears invasive species are todays main weapons in the fight against todays invaders. A few years ago we were advised to kill and destroy the gobie. Today it is the invader that is capable of controlling the zebra and the quaga invaders while at the same time being the preferred food of bass and brown. Before too long the entire Lake Ontario ecosystem will have morphed into the Caspian sea ecosystem with pacific salmon on top of the piramid.Maybe we should ask the Iranians and Russians to come populate the shore and fish for Asian carp It seems to me that we completely screwed up our lake

Please explain this a bit more. I have no idea what you mean. As for me "insinuating" that money is the driving factor in putting pressure on the DEC, that is not what I wrote. I mentioned this as a possibility and a question worth asking. The only reason for singling out Vince as an example is that he comes up with very clear ideas, opinions, and suggested solutions based on his experience. My main argument for trying to keep the politicians far away from the DEC is based on what happened to the cod in the Gulf Of Maine. Politicians started trying to get more votes and donations by undermining the Massachussetts department of the environment and allowing the different fishing industry groups to destroy what was left. As a result the cod stocks are now severely depleted and The Gulf Of Maine is closed for the Cod fishery

The golden rule in research through statistics is isolating one factor . This can only be done while leaving all other factors unchanged. In 1975 the alewives were where they are now too. so they have always underestimated them. I agree that the changes made by nature should be addressed, but in co-operation with the DEC not against them. The DEC should be reactive (but fast). In this case being pro-active can be disastrous. If in co-operation with the DEC we can change their policy, that would be great. If we go head to head against the ones who are supposed to the guardians of our lake ,that would not be very good at all.

Following this thread there are a few things that are not clear. It seems that most contributors think that the DEC is supposed to make Lake Ontario into a huge source of income for the fishing, chartering and tourism industry. But what happens if conservation of the health of the lake does not increase or maybe even lowers the value of the lake as a source of income? Does that mean that the DEC or the Government is lazy or evil or hates upstaters or whatever? Or does it mean that maybe the DEC does exactly what it is supposed to do,but it hurts a certain industry? As for Lake Ontario powering a huge tourism industry of a billion dollars revenue (not profit) or maybe more. Well that is very nice, but, In the overall NYS budget that is really just spit in a bucket. Accusing the DEC of not doing its job, requires a specific definition of what the DEC is supposed to do and not an opinion about what it is supposed to do. It also requires factual information and proof of these facts. At this point in time the DEC has a lot of information which it tries to work with in order to make the right decisions. Vince may have his observations and he may have his opinions about these observations. He may be spot on,but without the proper backup of proof, he may be drawing the wrong conclusions. I think that instead of attacking the DEC and accusing them of being politicised we should try to work with them and help as much as we can instead of attacking them. Mainly because these attacks will push the DEC into the arms of politicians, where the DEC should be far away from politics doing what it is supposed to do. Peace, also to people who like to stare at baboon rear ends

All that money for the Parkway may have gone to our very own "Tunnel to Nowhere" just north of Rochester Airport right along the 390. Nobody ever uses that example of politicians being in bed with local developers and yet,the lights shine in there every day. I would be amazed if even fifty cars go through there in a week! The same group of people who stole your money for that tunnel are stealing the money that should go to repairing the Parkway and they are using it to give each other plum jobs like for instance "commisioner of the Water authority" or give it to their developer patrons so they can create other boondoggles like "Renaissance Squaire" or another throughway exit in Chili or of course "The Fast Fairy(ferry)" They don't live in New york City. They are right here in Upstate. The only time you have a bit of a chance to change things is during election time. Remember, politicians are like diapers. They need to be changed often and before they start smelling bad. Thanks for reading my rant, I feel better now.

I hate the thought of them bouncing around while hanging where they can fall in the water. Mine go in the storage box.

Originally lake trout fed heavily on ciscos. At night the ciscos would come up to the surface to feed and the lake trout would come up right with them to feed on these ciscos. As Sk8man said, they are opportunists

The price of pellets will probably go way up in the near future. This is because the German government is encouraging renewable energy for power plants. A number of German power plants are now burning pellets imported from the USA. Pellets used to made from saw dust and other leftover products from the wood industry. Now the pellet producers are buying up trees to turn into pellets. This is an energy form that will become more expensive in the near future.

We gave it another try this morning. We left the dock at 5.30 and reached the shallow waters in front of the Salmon River well before sunrise. Compared to 2 weeks ago there were few boats out and they were all fishing in the 20 foot waters. We fished outside the crowd in 30 to 40 feet waters. Just around sunrise we hooked into our first king, using a Yozuri stick bait which is really meant for off shore tuna fishing but it has enough action to make an angry salmon strike. 15 minutes later number 2 came knocking on our door, this one on a more traditional j-plug. Both fish,a male and a female looked ready to start their final trip up the river and after their encounter with first our lures and then our net, may just make it up to altmar. They both swam away in a strong manner and, with a bad after taste of strange looking fish in their mouth they probably will not try another lure for a few days. 2 for 2 is not that bad ,but it seems that we were amongst the most succesful this morning. We saw only one other boat hooking up (they lost it). A few rigs were out over 60 feet without succes and a few more were out deep trying for cohos which probably are staging in 150 feet of water. Maybe one more run out to the east end next week, but after that, it will be coho and steelhead out of Rochester, probably in Longline's stomping grounds and in November I'll be working the browns as they start gathering in front of the creeks. So far the catching season has been very disappointing ,but the fishing season has been great! Let's hope that this winter will be mild and that next spring will bring a better season filled with more and bigger kings. For the meantime,we can all enjoy ourselves with maintaining our boats and getting them ready for next year.

How rough is to rough for a good time?
rolmops replied to Mossyhorns's topic in Open Lake Discussion
Somebody may ask you why you had to come all the way out to Lake Ontario to puke over the deck railing while you could easily have done that from the deck railing behind your house..... -

That would be a bit too late, unless you are in a submarine. -
Does anybody here know of a vinyl decal maker who can make the large blue decals that can be found on Starcraft Islanders? Thank you, Cornelis.
