I run a Sitex SVS 650. But it is not so much the sonar,it is the sensitivity of the transducer and the location of the transducer under the keel. I was given a very good airmar transducer that I would never have bought myself because I considered it overkill, but since it was free,I was glad to use it.

Dependent on the quality of your transducer,you are able to see the downrigger cable and the ball. Add to this that the thermocline is clearly visible. Now when I see my torpedo below the thermocline at the bottom of my angled cable,I know exactly how deep my torpedo is. In fact,I usually check the depth of riggers on my fishfinder. When on the Horsin Around we do it with a furuno 582 and when on my Islander I use a Sitex SVS 650 which is just as good if not better than a furuno. As for your calculation of angle and distance. You are still quite a bit off. Blow back does not produce a straight line (cable) and you cannot calculate different currents and relative speed compared to the water speed at different depths. I can see my downrigger depth on my fishfinder(Furuno 582). With 15 pound torpedoes the blow back is far less than it is with 6 or 9 pound balls. But what you say would make sense with lighter balls

We do not usually take pictures, mostly because we practice catch and release and holding these fish up in the air does not improve their chanches for survival.

In the morning there were no flees at all,but later in the day they sort of came back.

Today was weird upside down fishing with a clearly defined thermocline at roughly a hundred feet down over a 180. We caught 2 decent sized browns on flasher flies well below the thermocline 120 foot down over 140. We also caught 7 kings on flasher flies ,all around a hundred feet down. The kings were above the browns.... Most boats around us caught zilch or only one or 2 while we were working on a double header. We concluded that it was dumb luck combined with more dumb luck.( there were two of us on board) We went 9 for 10 . The one we lost came off a few seconds after it hit. All in all, a great day on the water.

I was fishing that area today and the down temps were around 60 degrees 90 feet down. Lakers like it colder. You can go fish in front of the dunes at about 120 to 140 feet down. At the end of the day,your arms will feel reel tired.

You may want to consider abandoning the surge brakes and changing to electric drum brakes. That is probably cheaper and better.

Yes I have. You can scavence a similar eye from another rod or order one online. I used sowing thread and rolled it nicely over the flat sections. When it was done, I put some super glue over the thread and it worked just fine ever since,that is five years by now.

We left the dock at five o'clock this morning and went west and north until we hit 120 feet. There we set up for a complete salmon program and as we went towards 200fow we had FF lines between 60 and 140 down. We went 10 for 14 with 1 screamer getting off and another 24.11 pounds on the board.The ones that were caught were 8 salmon,one 9 pound big football brown and one 10 pound laker They were deep at 140 but also higher up in about 70 to 80 feet. Both spoons and ff took hits. Because of all sorts of reasons we could not take part in the Oswego Pro-Am,but I gather that we would have done quite well with that harvest. Hopefully,all the stars will align for next year's Pro-Am.

I always thought thar the break away cable is there in case the rigger gets caught on something (ground,rocks,tree) and the break away cable will snap instead of the main cable.It is specially designed to save your probe in case of a hangup. I make my own with 60 pound test steel leader and so far I was lucky enough not to have them tested.

Fish live in their own environment, in this case a mass of water that moves in a certain direction and the fish move right along with it as part of that water mass. They can freely move in any direction,but always relative to the speed of their water mass. Much like you and I can go anywhere on this planet and yet we move at 15000 miles per hour because our environment does. (relative to the sun). If we want to troll effectively we must make our lures move with a certain speed relative to the water mass below us and we can go in any direction that we please as long as we bear in mind to move right along with the fish carrying water mass that we target. If the current is to the west we can troll north west by compass,but our lure inside the water mass will be moving at 90 degrees of the movement of that water mass. Therefore,it does not matter which direction we troll relative to the current below us as long as our down speed is the one we go by.
