  1. It may even go farther. By netting the lamprey in these select few streams before they spawn, the population can be brought even farther down. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  2. There are big changes about to happen in the fight against lampreys. Google "dead lamprey scent" and read how it already used in the treatment. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  3. My favorite way to prepare small lakers is poaching in aluminum foil. Clean the fish but do not filet it. Drizzle some olive oil on aluminum foil and lay the laker on it. Stuff it with some sliced onion and a bit of garlick. Now take some dill, lemon and butter sauce (McCormick) and pour inside. Pour more of the sauce on top and sprinkle some grated cheese (parmagan). Now lay some slices of lemon and some parsley on top. Fold up foil and lay the package on the grill. Let it steam inside the foil for 4 or 5 minutes and serve with white wine. I like to pour some wine on the fish so it poaches in the wine as well. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  4. The EPA released a statement today stating that the use of corn for ethanol production costs more fuel than it produces. Interesting that they remember that little well known fact now that the fuel prices have come down. The oil industry is starting to target ethanol.
  5. I second pro builders. They do very good work and do not rip you off. The difference between a marine starter and an automotive starter is crucial for your safety. On a car, a car starter or for that matter any electronic part is in an open environment. If gasoline drips out,it falls on the ground in case of a leak. In a boat, the leaking fuel goes in the bilge and causes gases to accumulate under the deck. (Hence the blower). An automotive starter may give off a spark and your boat will go up.... You cannot stop the boat in the middle of the lake and step out like you would with a car on the road. That is why all the electronic stuff on a boat must be double insulated. 6. It is possible to do a good rebuild for about $125.
  7. Are these original or have you added lead?
  8. Thanks. That is what I normally do
  9. I've tried monel single strand 50# test in both fresh and salt water. I had to use carboloid guides because of the higher abrasiveness of the material. With 7 stranded or 19 stranded wire you can see a single strand going bad and replace it . this saves your terminal tackle. The monel single strand tends to break off without warning and you will loose all hardware. If you want to change to wire line ,it may be better to go to a multi strand stainless.
  10. What happens to these wooden boats when they are taken out of the water in fall? Does the wood dry and warp or shrink?
  11. There is more than one way to stop a subsidy, but when changes in the market make a subsidised material obsolete, that will always be the most effective . This is an example of such a market and soon enough some politician will claim this to be his achievement and the subsidy will die a natural death
  12. Can you say Garmin? A simple 182 with or without a lake ontario map if it is for speed. It comes in black and white or in color. These GPS units out of production but you can still get them on E-Bay.
  13. At least the 3 liter mercruisers are just basic GM blocks. So why use a high grade fuel? Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  14. In Henrietta I paid $3.05 on 5/30. Ethanol free 87 has always been available in Pittsford just past the railroad tracks. I think it is becoming more available because, now that fuel prices have come down, it is cheaper without the ethanol in spite of ethanol subsidies. Maybe for once the farm lobby is losing its subsidy battle.
  15. Good job, in spite of it being a bit sloppy out there. How big a rig are you fishing on?
  16. Went over to the fast track station to get ethanol free gas and expected to have to buy premium when to my surprise, there was a sign saying :" New, 87 0ctane ethanol free gas" this might be the beginning of the end of ethanol laced gas. Cornelis.
  17. Left the launch at 6pm and went north and east to about a hundred feet and started setting up. We started out with with dreamweaver ss nbk lures on the riggers at 40 and 50 down which did a nice job on the steelhead. We tried the dipseys with spin doctors and flies using every color combination in the book to no avail. We gave up on flies and changed to lures ,first black and white and later green. the dipsies were out at 160 feet and 185 . They both started catching lakers. All in all 7 steelies and 5 lakers. the lakers were all between 10 and 15 pounds. This time around,we did not use the net even once. We brought the fish alongside the boat put a jaw clamp on, unhooked and released without the fish ever leaving the water. they all swam away.Non of the lakers had lamprey scars. All in all a nice day.
  18. thank you so much for ignoring Owas co lake. My cottage is right there and I love fishing this lake.Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  19. This year I went from a 19 pitch to a 15 pitch prop on my Islander. Where before it was hard to go under 3mph,She now slows down to about 2mph. Its not just the lower pitch, its also the lower stress on the engine that allows me to troll at 500 rpm. I still keep my kicker on board ,to use in case of need and as pap said,it will get you back to shore.
  20. See if it does the same when the cowling is taken of the engine. Sometimes there is an exhaust leak under the hood. The air intake starts taking in exhaust gas,and the engine becomes oxygene starved. Also ,pour a can of Seafoam in the tank. It is a decarbing, carburetor cleaning mixture. It may also be a carburetor float being stuck in place and not letting enough fuel through.
  21. A few weeks ago I was careless in shallow water and I lost a torpedo, not the probe heaven thanks. So anyway, I had to get a replacement and being a firm believer in Murphie laws I ordered 4. If I would have ordered one, it would have joined the first one on the next trip out. Now that I have five they will never get lost. I ordered a set from Salmon Slayer Vermont and a set from Trout hunter Watkins Glen just so I could see what works better for me. Salmon Slayer 's product is a bit rounded at the nose, much like the Atommik type, They are black rubber coated, but they do not have an eye at the rear end which are needed when using cannon releases. Price included shipping is $75 and can be paid with paypal. Trout hunter's product has a slightly more pointed nose, there is no rubber coating, but it does have the eye at the rear end. Price including shipping is $70 for a pair. Trout hunter does not do Paypal. Both products track equally well and overall performance is much the same. In the end it is personal preference, but there is no quality difference. Cornelis.
