Here's another consideration... For those of you running a kicker with an I/O stern drive, how are you steering your kicker? My I/O has power assisted rack and pinion, and my kicker would be attached to the out drive via a bar or rod. Would that make it more difficult to steer the kicker with the main motor and power steering system not running? -

What kicker motor has the best charging system?

I thought about running my 7.5 this year but I don't know if I will need a 20" or 25" shaft (I haven't measured it yet). I'm keeping records of the amount of gas I burn each trip out so I have some sort of measuring stick to compare to. My wife loves this Bayliner, and Lake O is too harsh on her bladder with chop as little as 1 foot high, so she prefers to take this boat to places like Cranberry lake for an overnight camping/fishing trip. We don't own a camper, so this boat serves that purpose very well, which is why it's not a full time Lake O boat. I have options and some good ideas from the feedback left here, and I appreciate it a bunch! -

Thanks for all the feedback! A-Lure-A, what model Honda motor do you have? Pap, I don't know what my alternator puts out, but are you saying that it's not a good match for my size 29 interstate deep cycle battery? I chose this battery because it has over 800 MCA and over 200 reserve capacity. After 3 trips out with this battery I haven't noticed any charging issues or performance issues with my electronics. It's not hard to confuse me when it comes to electrical stuff. Jeremy, what model is your Mercury kicker? The only long shaft motor I own now is a 1980 Evinrude 7.5 with a 20" long shaft. It's halfway taken apart because I was going to convert it to a short shaft for my 16ft utility boat. And honestly I'd rather have a 10 or 15hp motor for a kicker on that Bayliner. The older 2 strokes are lighter, and my kicker mount is rated for up to 100 pounds (it's factory mounted on the swim platform). Thanks again for all the feedback! -
I'm just doing some research on a 10hp kicker motor for my boat. I only have one size 29 Interstate DC battery, and I run a Humminbird 959, a Sub Troll, a Humminbird 859, a VHF radio, and lights if I fish at night. I think I would need a high output charging system on a kicker motor to keep up with the current draw from my electronics. I'm not dead set on buying a kicker motor just yet because I have Amish buggy bags, a Happy Troller trolling plate, and buckets. I know it is cheaper to run a kicker than my main motor (a 5.0L OMC Cobra), but how many fishing trips would it take for the kicker to pay for itself? New kicker motors cost half as much as I paid for my boat (or more), and my retired budget gives me few options. So right now I am just researching my options for "older" motors. It could even be a 2-stroke with a charging system, it doesn't have to be a 4-stroke. I only troll Lake Ontario about 3-4 times per month in this boat, so it's not getting full time use like some of your boats might see. For the sake of research, what kicker motor in the 8-10hp range would you recommend for a 21ft Bayliner Trophy 2160, fully enclosed cabin, weighing close to 5000 pounds loaded? Thanks!

Question; Pros/Cons of using a trolling plate?

Thanks Dan and Pap, I was wondering if the coated cable would work better, it seems like it would hold up a lot longer than the lanyard. -
Question; Pros/Cons of using a trolling plate?

Thanks for the tip with the handle, Pap! Does your boat have a swim platform? Mine does, and it seems to not allow the lanyard a straight enough pull from the transom to the plate. Just wondering if my swim platform might be getting in the way. -

I just bought a NIB 959ci HD GPS unit for $600 on ebay. It doesn't have DI or SI but it has the 83/200kHz dual beam transducer. It works great and has the 8" screen. It also fits in the same mounting bracket as your 898. Ebay has brand new units for some great prices right now. I haven't priced any of the 999ci units with the SI. I also have an 859ci HD DI that I bought last year and have had no issues with it. Here's a screen shot of the 959 last weekend. It was my 2nd time out with the 959 and I am still fine tuning the settings, but this shows the 83 ducer on the left and 200 ducer on the right.

Question; Pros/Cons of using a trolling plate?
Todd in NY replied to Todd in NY's topic in This Old Boat
I haven't used the trolling plate yet because the lanyard needs to be replaced, it is frayed about 75% through at the release lever. It is also real "sticky" when pulling on the release lever by hand. I ordered a parts kit for it from the Happy Troller web site so I can replace the lanyard and the springs, and $10 for the kit is reasonable IMO. The plate is supposed to be stored in the down position when not it use, and I the PO didn't know this because he's not a fisherman, and he admitted that he didn't know anything about the trolling plate. I also downloaded the owners manual for the plate and I found out that the plate is also supposed to be lubed before each fishing trip. I'm guess WD40 will work, or would a spray type lithium grease work better (like PB blaster brand)? I also ended up buying a pair of 28" Amish buggy bags because my 2 buckets weren't getting my speed down below 2.5 mph, and that was at bare minimum RPM's. With these 28" bags I am able to get my GPS speed down to 1 mph. I didn't know if I would need the 22" bags or the 28" bags, but with everything that I researched, my trolling speed at idle (800 to 1,000 RPM) was over 3.5 to 4 mph according to both FF GPS units. Maybe the 22" bags would have been ok, but I was also comparing it with my friend's boat. He has a 26ft Penn Yan with a 5.7L, his boat weighs 6500 pounds and he uses 22" buggy bags to get his speed down to 1.2 or 1.4 mph. Comparatively, my boat weighs 3500 pounds and has a 5.0L, so I figured I couldn't get my speed down far enough with 22" bags, especially if I were going with the current. Best of luck to all who are fishing this weekend. I'm doing yard work and replacing the power steering and alternator belts on my boat. I'll hit the lake next week when it's less crowded at the boat launches. -

I wish mine had zerks on them, it would be an easy decision.

Another possibility... If I lose another bearing buddy I might go back to those tin caps, they're a lot cheaper
-
Thanks Pap, never heard of it, but sounds like some good stuff.
-
The bearing buddies that I am currently using are the 1.98" size. I tried using my dial calipers that I use for reloading but they are too long to fit with the wheel on the hub. I was going to measure for an out-of-round surface somewhere inside the hub, but I didn't want to have to remove the wheel. The bearing buddy has to be seated with a dead blow hammer, and doesn't seem to seat any easier than the other 3 bearing buddies, so it has to be off by thousandths of an inch. I might end up replacing all 4 hubs this year just to be on the safe side, and all new brake shoes too. The trailer sat for the last 2 years because the PO kept it in a boat slip.

Can you post a picture of your 12 pound torpedo?
