Sandy Creek 7/4
carpedium replied to carpedium's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Never knew that, I just figured I would get them as far out as possible. Thanks for the tip! [ Post made via Android ] -
Fishing Report Your Name / Boat Name: ============== TRIP OVERVIEW ============== Date(s): Time on Water: 9-12 Weather/Temp:nice Wind Speed/Direction:west Waves: 2 feet Surface Temp: 67-72 Location: LAT/LONG (GPS Cords): =============== FISHING RESULTS =============== Total Hits: 2 Total Boated:2 Species Breakdown: Laker, King Hot Lure: Glow Frog, NBK Trolling Speed: Down Speed: Boat Depth: 180 Lure Depth: 60-80 ==================== SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS ==================== A little rough out there for my setup, but still fun nonetheless. Ended up with a 26" laker and a 32" king. I'm surprised that nothing touched the familiar bite whole alewives that I ran at 250-300ft out on the #3 setting with wire.

Can these be thawed and re-freezed, or do you just thaw, use what you need, then refrigerate? -
This weekend wind/thermocline/productivity

I think 60 C is a little too warm. I don't know how warm, but my days in Quebec, NS, and NL taught me a few things! I think it would be reliable for general purposes, but as always YMMV. There really isn't enough resolution bet the farm on it. -

Paul, I'd love to take you up on the "long version" sometime! I'm a geek like that. Thanks for the info. I think you misunderstood though. I was not referring only to surface temp, but cross-sectional subsurface temp as given for lake O. Graphic "B" in the link above. It shows you isobars of the temperatures vertically as if you were to look at a cross sectional "cut" of the lake. The "long version" requires a few "Adult beverages" at the Black North. However, I do have an on-the-water class coming up on Sunday July 17th where will be covering all that stuff. How's that for a shameless plug?? I realized after I wrote all that that you were probably referring to graphic B but the Lat Lon lines you referred to threw me off. Like I said, you're on the right track. The most important thing to remember with Lake Ontario is cold water is heavier than warm water. Everything else is usually a function of the wind acting on the water. Hey, i'm buyin' the drinks! Don't get the wrong impression even though I fish out of sandy........ Guilt by association is not fair. (viewtopic.php?f=52&t=24963&hilit=sandy+creek+shootout&start=15) I'd seriously consider a class - keep me posted with the schedule. I can't make the 17th 'cause I'll be up fishing Lake George. Thanks again for the info Paul. -
We we all waiting in suspense to see the results of the wire we use? The torpedo wire has worked well for me so far, no fish on it yet... but caught a pretty healthy tree stump about a month ago. That was a hell of a fight.

Finding the Thermocline
carpedium replied to TyeeTanic's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
I just posted some questions on the interpretation of the data: viewtopic.php?f=16&t=25470 -
Based on this link: http://www.glerl.noaa.gov/res/glcfs/glc ... pe=N&hr=-1 It looks like there has been a breeze from the NW over the last few days. Its pretty clear that this breeze has been causeing upwellings of cold water along the canadian side, and pushing all of this warm water toward the american side. Furthermore, judging by the tightly packed bars around 15M on cross section "B" it looks like there is a thermocline finally set up for this weekend. My questions, if you'd be so kind to provide your input: - This wind condition (From the NW) looks to be pushing the thermocline lower and moving it around, but not really disturbing its overall presence. This suggests that fishing should be good as far as that goes on the american side this weekend, correct? - Around 43.45 Lat there are some major shifts in the location of this thermocline, and as you get further out, it seems to greatly stabilize. Is this evidence that fishing will be better down 60-120 over say... 300-400? In using this data as a tool, am I missing or misinterpreting anything? I'd like to start understanding what is going on based the tools available and what I have learned so far instead of just blindly "following the pack". Thanks, Matt

So, if I wanted to pick some of these up (rigged) I would add the meat and then pull behind a dipsy and flasher? any reason not to run these behing a 42nd spinny or mountain dew crush spinny? Does the baithead have to match the spinny color-wise? Any advantage to these over the whole baits from familiar bite? Any tips for someone who has never used meat? Thanks, Matt -
All of my kings this year have been on reds and pinks except for one which was the scottB special green/silver/copper cup with a glow eye. I think they have been spotty for people up until this weekend. Just like with all fishing I'm learning there actually is some sort of luck involved. Otherwise it would be called "catching" Good luck

I run dipsys off the same side as my 4' boom riggers set at a 45 degree angle relative to the transom. I have never had a problem with a tangle. I am also now running planers without using lead or copper - I just attach an inline sinker from my mainline to a flouro leader. I don't know how deep that gets me, but it worked for me yesterday!
