Quality net without breaking the bank?
Mike M replied to Seneca Slammer's topic in Tackle and Techniques
I have a ranger salmon sIze net too and I'm happy with it. Replaced bag last year with some genric bag not happy with that. Where can I get a good bag for a salmon size net?? I like the coated bags that are resistent tob hook penatration. Any advice please. -
I'm not complanining. Fish strictly off niagara county and sometimes go into canadian waters. Tons of staging kings at bar right now. some are calling the past month the best they've ever seen. You know if your only getting out twice a week its really hard to stay on top of this fishing. You really gotta watch the weather and pick your days. When the east win blows best to stay home. When it starts coming from SW or W don't expect fishing to get good in 1 day. BTW, I only got out twice a week this year but I was able to pick those days somewhat.Got friends that are out 3-4 days aweek, and always out there when weather is right. I network with these guys and it helps a ton.

Its been suggested that I should try VMC sparkpoint 4X strong treble in size 2 for my stingers and size 1 for my stingray spoons. I looked at some-wow! they are sharp!! Made from vanadium steel and chemically sharpened. Almost never need to sharpen so I'm told. Any opinions?? Any other hooks you guys reccomend???

We lost to many steelys today. We've never gotton into replaceing stock hooks on my trolling spoons. If I wanted upgrade hooks what wouid you guys reccomend?? Ive got quite a collection of NKs,Stingers,Stingrays,DWs and Fishlanders. I know I should be hitting these hooks with a sharping file or stone too. Advice please.

Are you guys NOT in the LOC derby??? Hope you are. -
Had the Panther remote steering on my 9.merc pro kicker pushing a 22ft penn yan outrage. Did not like the panther remote steering at all. Came with a new to me boat, took it off half way thru first season with boat and used an ez-steer. Next season put a TR-1 autopilt on kicker been very happy. Previous boat I also had a Tr-1autopilot in a 24ft Lund and was very happy. We like trolling with a 4stroke kicker an we love the TR-1 autopilot!!! Its like an xtra person on boat who's job is to drive and they never complain!!! Great slow speed controll. It definitely puts fish in the boat!!!

When I had cannons on the boat I found the best service by far came from A&P Custom tackle in the Albany area.Peter Shumannn is the owner 518-283-5920. He always gave me great service with fast turnaround time. I would ship my riggers to him. Would be back in business much faster then using local cannon service center I will not name, Pete Shumann is a good guy running a small business like myself. Hes also an avid fisherman.'

I have fished western LO and eastern LE for 25 years. The sharing of info is definitely different on the 2 lakes. Very little specific info is found on internet from eastern L. Erie. Seems its mostly word of mouth on Erie from your good old boy network. Luckily I do have a network of friends I talk to via phone. Even on the VHF hardly any detailed info is shared.Seems on LO theirs lots of internet sites that give very specific and detailed info. LOU,Spoonpullers,LOTSA, even GLA. You can go to these sites and ask a specific question and pretty much get a straight answer. Location, lures, speed the stuff you need to know. On the VHF I've made some friends I've known for over 20 years. Lots of out of state guys on LO always willing to share. When a tourny is just around the corner you better have a goodoldboy network you can call on both lakes. Anyhow just my observations after all these years. I'd welcome an LEU site and hope it could be as great a site as LOU has been for many years.

I found my 97 outrage in sandusky-port clinton area. I live in Buffalo area. My basic criteri was it had to be a hardtop in 22 to 26ft range. Hard to find cause all companys that made freshwater boats in this size either went out of business or stopped making them. Mostly used craigs list to search Buffalo,Rochester,Erie,Syracuse areas. When I started looking at sandusky-port clinton area I realized there were more used freshwater fishing boats THERE then probably anywhere in U.S.!!! Made 3 trips to Ohio in fall of 2012, 600+ miles each trip. Each trip I would have appointments all lined up to see and some watertest boats. Nov 1 2012 brought home the 97 Outrage, had snow flurries on ride home. Good luck!

I own a 97 outrage and really like it. Mine has the 4.3 V-6 mercruiser I/O. Plenty of power, will do 38mph on flat water. Just right for 2 to 4 guys for a day of trolling. Have a 9.9 merc 4 stroke kicker on it with TR-1 autopilot.Keep it on trailer, pulls real easy on loadmaster bunk trailer. Good on fuel too.

is'nt the microwave east of olcott?? -
Playing around with this. Recent spread fishing 80-120fow for staging kings. Port side: high diver#3 out 170 with mag spoon, low diver#1.5 out 110 with F-fly, port outdown rigger down 60ft with F-fly. Chute Rigger with Mag spoon. Starboard side: high diver#3 out 180 with mag spoon, low diver !.5 with F-fly out 90, starboard rigger down 53ft with F-fly. Questions: could the outdown riggers with FF baits be to close the inside 1.5 divers with FF baits?? To much comotion to close together?? BTW all diver rods are 30lb 7 strand wire. Outdown riggerbooms are 5ft. Boat beam 8.5ft. Also running 10 color down chute. We got bites on all rods except port rigger,10 color and both starboard dipseys. We went 2 for 3 on mature kings this morning with many shakers. Our action was better then most we talked to this morning. Guess my general question is would we be better off thinning out our spread. Maybe run just 2 riggers,2 wire divers, and a 10 color down the chute?? pHigh diver#3 out170 with mag spoon,

I've been using a TR-1 for trolling since 2002. Would not want to troll any other way!!! Current boat is a 22ft Penyan outrage with a 9.9 merc prokicker 4 stroke, Previous boat was 24ft Lund sportcabin with 9.9 yami. You should be able to find some videos on TR-1 on youtube.Bought mine from Calumet marine they were great at helping with install and programing. Steering and throtle all from one remote. No longer does someone have to be locked to the steering wheel to have a fun day of trolling. Its the best way to set up a boat for trolling IMHO.

Double D 5/8 at the bar
Mike M replied to dvdegeorge's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Great job!!! Mind if I ask what was your hot bait? Headed out tomorrow any help is appreciated. -
Rick, Just want to take my hat off to you for your GREAT fishing reports. For those of us that can only get out a couple times a week it really gives us alot of optimism about our next time on the water. Your sharing of info is the way all of us should be in this great sport we all love. Fact is the # of fishing and hunting licences is on the decline nationwide. Doesn't it make sense that those of us that are having lots of success should help those that are struggling? The taxpayer $ that support our outdoor sports will not be there unless politicians feel lots of people/votes are enjoying these outdoor sports. Especially Great Lakes Fishing. Your doing a great service to us all . Thanks and please keep up the good work. Wish you lots of success in your business!!

Had Cannons for more then 20 years on 3 different boats. They were Mag 10s some from late 80s some from mid 90s. Had 4 on my 24ft Lund. Had a 5th mag10 I kept around in case 1 would act up. They would have periodic problems and I was glad to find A&P Tackle in upstate NY 518-283-5920. Peter Shumann I believe is owner. The service and turnaround time from A&P was amazing. Sold the old Lund 24ft with those old riggers on it. Big ? on new to me boat for 2013 was what rigger?? After lots of thought, research and opinions I choose Scotty 2116s. Just seemed everyone that owned a Scotty was happy with 0 problems .I agree there ugly compared to Cannons.Only complaint on the 2116s is there almost to fast!! Some of my elderly fishing buddies are almost afraid of them. Probably would have been happy with 1100 series there not quite as fast i'm told.Went with 2116s so I could have option to run up to 20lb balls for those really deep kings I keep hearing about.Anyhow 2 seasons and no problems with my Scottys.

No experience running them but I was very impressed with the look, finish quality and all the color choices! Bayrat was at the Niagara/LOTSA expo, we won a bunch in a raffle and bought about a 1/2 doz more. Look forward to trying them on spring browns and L.Erie walleye. I think I was told there made in Erie PA. Not much made in USA these days,if they catch fish they will get my support.
