I stand corrected. It's a coho. I've never seen one that large, so when it hit the deck, I just assumed 'king'. (Also, I consulted with the fish authority- Hank.) Thanks for the input. Jim

Tim, If you're going out of Port Bay (to the west), I'd suggest starting at 140 and working out. We marked a few good bait pods with big marks around them. Temps inconsistent but around mid 40's to high 50' 90 down. (That was this morning though). Tight lines, Jim

We set up in 70 fow hoping for a few browns, but the down temp at 60 feet was the same as the surface temp (not good)! So we headed north in search mode with two down riggers running sliders with spoons, and two wires with spinnies and flies. We could have left the wires below decks for all the good they did. We did have a hit and a miss on one white/green dot w/ green glo fly, but that was it. The morning started slow until about 9:45 a.m. with two releases and two misses. Then I brought in a small king on a NBK. Next my son Chris landed a nice 15 lb. king (nice fight! Heading for the smoker!) on a Die Hard. Then Mike brought in a 4 lb. steelie on a Michael Jackson (sorry no picture). We ended the day with a double header with me bringing in a 5 lb. brown and Mike, a small king. All in all, it was a great morning with good friends (can't ask for more!!- Well maybe a few more fish!) Jim

Make sure the drive worm gear is well lubricated. If it dries out, it will cause the motor to over torque, thus popping the breaker. Jim

We started just east of you in 120 fow. With the light early SSE wind, we started a NE troll until we got just east of the channel. We picked up a small brown and a small king. We were now in 190 fow. We found 45 degree water 110 down at 180 fow, but it wasn't consistent. It fluctuated from around 41 to 52 degrees at that depth. The bait pods we saw were just out of temp at 85 to 100 fow. We turned and headed west until we got to the Chimney's with no takers in that direction. Then headed due north in hunt mode for anything big, but only picked up another dink brown and king! We got to 380 fow with no takers, turned and headed back in to shallower water. For us, it turned off at around 9:30. I tried you on the radio too, but didn't get an answer. Mike was getting the "low voltage" warning on his FF too last year, but remedied that problem by direct wiring the radio, removing it from the buss. I guess the FF is very voltage sensitive, and the radio sucks a lot of voltage in transmit mode. Jim

Hi Tim, Mike & I had about the same luck, except we had two small browns and two small kings. I think you followed us out of the channel. I tried to call you, but got your wife answered instead. She told me you forgot your phone! I hope I didn't wake her! Our day pretty much mirrored yours except we couldn't move any of our flasher/flies combos off the wire. All came on spoons. It was hard to find good, consistent temp, too. And we saw those bait pods, also. We circled a couple of times with no takers. We quit around 11:30. Jim

First, I'd like to congratulate Team Boxed Out for taking first place in the Open Division both days, and biggest fish on Saturday with a 25.95 pound king! They just beat our biggest fish by .75 pounds! They almost screwed up on Sunday by bringing in a box of three browns, one of which was undersized. That cost them 12.37 points (10 for the fish and 2.37 for weight), but still managed a score of 17.45 for the Sunday win. I fished with my fishing buddies Mike McCoy and Rich Johnson on Mike's boat 'Irish Wake' (thus the team name) out of Port Bay. Saturday started slow with a couple of dink browns. Then about 7:30, we were just resetting a rigger rod when one of the wire rods started screaming. Mike grabbed it, and fought it for about 35 minutes. When the king hit the deck, so did Mike. I think he was more tired that the fish! When we weighed it on the boat, we thought we had a 27-29 pound king. But the official scales said 25.2. We gotta' invest in better scales (or new glasses)! We managed a full box for Saturday, but the other two were just 19.5" kings, giving us a total score 60.28. Sunday was rock and roll time. I'm not sure how many boats were entered that day, but there were only four that registered by noon. We started early with three fish on in the first half hour, but all three were lost. Then as the sun got higher in the sky, everything just shut off for us! We tried deep, shallow, and in the middle, with no luck. We tried just about all the lures we had, when finally, around 10:00, we managed a small laker, and that was it. We almost didn't enter it, but then thought that if we were struggling, maybe there were others in the same position. As luck would have it, there were only two other teams with fish. Our 5.1 pound laker gave us the second place win for 15.10 points. This was the second time we fished the Wayne County PRO/AM. We had a blast (even with Sundays occasional six & seven footers)!! It was great seeing and talking to some of my LOU friends, and meeting a couple of new members. See ya' next year. Great memories!! Tight lines, Jim

Hi Vic, Three of our LOU members won the BIG FISH FRIDAY contest. Finders Keepers, Coup and Woody. They will probably have more information later, but I think they won with three kings- two 25 pounders and a 22 pounder. Jim

Two weeks ago, we switched over to 30# flee flicker line for our two down lines. It works great. Hardly any fleas. Our dippsie rods are equiped with twillie tips, and the wire loads up pretty heavy. But as the fleas hit the twillie tips, they seem to 'slice' off the line pretty easily. Jim

Nice going Tim. Our day was about the same. Mike brought out his grandson Lee, and he soon had a sour left arm! We set up in 160 fow and followed yesterdays line. Within ten minutes, the wire dipsie with a white hoochie mama/white fly started screaming. it was set at 420 feet, and in about ten seconds, it was at 520 feet! Lee played it back and forth for about nine minutes, and had brought it in to 380 feet, when the hook popped and the fish was gone. I would have loved to see that moose! We ended the morning at around 10:30 a.m. with 5 steelies between 4-6 pounds, and a 16 pound king. Best lure was again the NK glow watermelon for three of the steelies and the king. Jim

Mike and I had another great day thanks (in a way) to Tim's (Finders Keepers) advice from yesterday. Tim mentioned that on his way in yesterday, he found a lot of good marks at 120 fow. As Mike and I were leaving the channel this a.m., I mentioned that Tim suggested we start the day in 160 fow (Hey, I'm old!! The memory isn't what it used to be!) It's a good thing we screwed up, because we finished the day 9 for 11!! Summary: 1 small coho on a NK watermelon off the rigger 75 down 2 steelies, both about 4 pounds- one on the same rigger as the coho, and one on a NK green glo down 140 6 kings- from 6 to 18 pounds- three on the NK green glo rigger down 140, one on a white hoochie mama/white fly out 420, one on a green dot black spinnie/ green fly out 360, and one on the NK watermelon down 70. Thanks again for the good advice Tim, even if I didn't follow it!! Hey, they moved out overnight!! Tomorrow, if the weather holds, I'm going out with Tim. (I think I'll let him pick the spot!!) There were quite a few boats out deeper (350-450 fow), but were pretty quiet on the radio. Not much was happening for the first hour. But then we started to mark fish 30-45 down, and brought one of the riggers up to 70. Almost imediately, the rod popped, and Mike brought in a nice 5 lb. steelie that hit the nk watermelon. What an acrobat!! We set back up, and the same rod popped again, and I brought in another steelie (maybe 4 lbs.) on the same lure! Then the wire with the hoochie mama starts screeming, and about ten minutes later, Mike brought in a 20.1 lb. king. As we were getting the king out of the net, the other rigger rod popped, and I landed a 6 lb. coho that hit a nk rainbow? on the slider. We decided to bring in one of the wires and put out a 5 color lead core with a kevorkian. Within five minutes, fish on! and Mike brings in another 4 lb. steelie. Within the next 45 minutes, we brought in two more steelies on the sliders (about 3 lbs. each), and one 10.3 lb. steelie on the lead core! About 11:15, we decided to call it quits, and headed in. All in all, we had a great day. I can't remember a day when we boated all the fish we had on!! Weather permitting, we'll be out again tomorrow. Good fishing, Jim

The 7 pounder hit a NK watermelon and the 5 pounder hit a 42nd. All but two of the kings were immatures. The 15 pounder hit the white/green dot spinny w/ white fly, and the 17 pounder hit the white hoochie/white fly. It seemed that at 9:30, all the fish went on break because we couldn't buy a bite. At about 10:30, the weather started to look a little threatening, so we decided to call it for the day, when the 100 foot rigger popped, and the reel started singing. I played the fish to the back of the boat, and as Mike started to get the net into position, the line let go right at the swivel! We just stood there and watched a decent steelhead swim away with our slider rigged with a kevorkian and a 42nd! Number two rule of fishing- check your knots often!! Especially when fishing sliders! I hear Tim (Finders Keepers) and his brother had another good day- 12 for 18? Hopefully he'll post the details. Jim
