We heard all the big'uns were at Oswego, so today, Mike and I decided to make a run from Port Bay to Oswego aboard the 'Irish Wake'. ============== TRIP OVERVIEW ============== Date(s): 09/04 Time on Water: 6:15 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Weather/Temp: sunny- 68 - 78 deg Wind Speed/Direction: 5 - 10 mph / NW Waves: 1 - 2.5 Surface Temp: 74 deg Location: Oswego LAT/LONG (GPS Cords): =============== FISHING RESULTS =============== Total Hits: 6 Total Boated: 3 Species Breakdown: all kings Hot Lure: Spin doctor green/green, hoochie white/white, e-chip green/green Trolling Speed: 1.9 - 2.9 mph Down Speed: ? Boat Depth: 85 - 140 fow Lure Depth: 80 - 100 down ==================== SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS ==================== We left Port Bay at about 6:15 and headed to Oswego. We set up in front of Rudy's (west of the college) about 7:00 and headed east. For a Friday, there seemed to be an awful lot of boat traffic. I don't think I've ever seen that many boats in one place before. Just after we finished setting up, our first hit came in front of the twin stacks on a White spin doctor w/ green spots and white fly, on a rigger, 80 down over 105 fow. Seemed like a nice fish, but only lasted about 20 seconds. At 9:30 in front of the five stacks, heading east, we landed and released a 18# king on a green spin doctor- green fly off the rigger in 112 fow, 95 down. We kept heading east and had two more misses (one on a green/green spinny on a dippsy out 270 and one on a white/green spot spinny green fly on a rigger, down 95) in front of the nuke plant. At 10:30, heading west, in front of the five stacks, we landed and released another 18# king. She hit a white hoochie mama/white fly on the dipsy, out 240. After that fish, it got quite. So around 2:30, we decided to pack it in and head back to Port Bay. We started to turn the boat east (with the wind) to bring in the gear, and the outside riggger fired. We landed and released a 23# king on a green/green e-chip down 90, over 130 fow, just east of the five stacks. So that encouraged us to hang around for an couple more hours - to no avail! So, we finally packed up and headed home. We hit Port Bay channel around 4:30 p.m. All in all, it was a great day on the water. Nice weather, Nice fishing, and great company. Marks on the screen were pretty steady all day, mainly 73 - 90 fow. And for all the boat traffic, there was very little conflict on who had the right of way. We stayed in 85 - 140 fow all day. We'll be back out today (Saturday), but will stay around Port Bay. Good fishing, Jim

Can anyone tell me where 'five stacks' is located, outside Oswego? I was originally from Oswego, but haven't fished that area in about twenty-five years! Weather premitting, I plan to head to Oswego tomorrow for four days of fishing, and am looking for some good advice (like stay at Port Bay, it's not worth the ride!, etc.). Thanks in advance. Tim, We were marking good fish, usually three to five at a time in the 80 to 90 feet down range around 120 - 180 feet depth. They just didn't like what we had! Hope you have a better day than we did! Good fishing, Jim

Tim, Mike and I went out this a.m. from 6:15 - 11:30. Same place, same gear, same conditions (except wind from the north) It was a humbling experience. We went 0 for 0! Just when you think you have these fish figured out, they let you know you haven't a clue! We threw everything we had at them and had one twitch on a dipsy rod that was gone before I could get to it. Oh well there's always a next time. Mike has to work Monday thru Wednesday. But, if the weather cooperates, we plan to head to Oswego Thursday a.m., fish that area, and return Sunday. It gave me and my fishing buddy Mike McCoy some good ideas of where and what to fish on the 21st. We left the bay at about 6:15 am and set up north of Chimney Bluffs in 70 fow, and started to head east toward the silos. We fished: One downrigger down 70 feet with a NK Watermelon and a (I can’t remember) on the slider. Two dipsys- one with cut bait 270 back, and one with a green hoochie w/ green fly 240 back. One nine color lead core down the chute with a 4 oz. weight and a green e-chip and green crinkle fly. We had three immature kings and one 5 – 6 lb. brown hit the NK Watermelon and one small king on the meat rig. All were returned to the water safely. When we were in 90 fow, just west of the channel, the watermelon rod started screaming out line again. I just held on and watched. After a couple hundred feet of line later, it decided to stop and rest. I managed to then start gaining some line back. After about fifteen minutes, I had it to the back of the boat and knew this king was a LOC contender. After a few scary moments with the net, we had her in the boat. Later, at Screwy Louie’s it officially weighed in at 28 pounds 14 ounces! I enjoyed first place for about two and a half hours! I am currently in eighth and dropping. Mike also had a big king take the lead core down to about ten turns of the backing. He managed to get it to within ten feet of the boat and as I was getting the net ready, it spit the e-chip and fly at us and slowly swam away. (Why do all the fish that get away look like tournament winners!!) Tim, Mike and I plan to be out in about the same area tomorrow (weather permitting). Welcome Brad! It's good to have another fisherman from Port Bay aboard! I'm fairly new to the site also, and it's helped me tremendously. In fact, I'm currently in third place in the LOC with a 28pound- 14 ounce king taken out in front of Chimney yesterday. Keep reading and asking questions, Jim

Thanks for the explaination Ray and Bill. It's just about what I thought it was, but I wasn't sure of the distance to run from the rigger.

I've heard guys refer to running their lures 'down and out' off the riggers. Can someone explain this? Thanks, Jim
