Hey Yankee Troller, would you mind explaining what the marks are on the screens? I think the straight horizontal lines are your downrigger balls, correct? And I know the arcs are fish and the big red ball on the 3rd screen is a school of bait, I believe. Being able to read the fish finder better is one thing that I'd really like to be able to do to help my fishing. What do the different colors represent, is that based on the density of whatever that particular material is? Thanks!

Usually when I want to take my mind off something, I go fishing....that probably won't help take your mind off it! Congrats on your new boat, I would like to have one like that some day.

Nice job on the bass and northern pike, glad to see you got into them. Too bad you couldn't get into the walleye to top it off, maybe next time though! -

I haven't been up yet, but will be heading up Memorial Day weekend. Let me know how you do this weekend if you get a chance! -
Thanks for all the advice, it has been very helpful. I think they are leaning towards the Helix as you all suggested. Now the question is, do they go with the Humminbird Helix 5 Sonar/GPS Combo, or do they spend an extra $50 and get the Humminbird Helix 5 DI Sonar/GPS Combo? I'm not too familiar with down imaging, so I'm just wondering if it's worth the extra $50?

I typically only fish on the finger lakes, so I will leave the more informational posts for the more experienced guys on here. Your last post you mentioned something about stacking lines on your downrigger. That is a very good way to cover more water when trolling. Below I have attached a link to Scotty Power Grip releases. These are very easy to use, and work very well in my opinion. You clip one end to the downrigger cable and the other end to your "stacker" line. I normally run a line right off the downrigger ball, and then my stacker 20' above that (on each downrigger). Then I will put one downrigger at say 80ft and the other at 70ft. That way I have lines at 80, 70, 60 (stacker line), and 50 (stacker line). That way you are covering 40 feet of water. http://www.cabelas.com/product/Scotty-Power-Grip-Plus-Release/1703200.uts?Ntk=AllProducts&searchPath=%2Fcatalog%2Fsearch%2F%3FN%3D1000004585%26Ne%3D1000004585%26Ntk%3DAllProducts%26Ntt%3Ddownrigger%2Brelease%26Ntx%3Dmode%252Bmatchallpartial%26WTz_l%3DHeader%253BSearch-All%2BProducts%26WTz_st%3DSearchRefinements%26form_state%3DsearchForm%26search%3Ddownrigger%2Brelease%26searchTypeByFilter%3DAllProducts%26x%3D10%26y%3D6&Ntt=downrigger+release

My parents are looking for a new fish finder for their bass boat. The boat is used mostly for bass/northern pike fishing, but will also be used for jigging for lake trout on the finger lakes. They are looking to stay around the $250-300 range, just wondering if anybody could suggest a good one for that price range. A few of the ones that they were looking at were the Lowrance Elite-4 Chirp (83/200), and the Humminbird Helix 5 Sonar/GPS Combo. I don't know much about boat electronics, so I'm looking for a little help! Thanks, Sean

Thanks for the replies everyone. Because I had very little time I stopped at Walmart and got a few tube jigs with some jig heads to try in the morning. We will be launching at the South end, but I think we might just motor up near the bluff to start with in the morning. Any suggestions on depths to start at?
-
My brother and I are going to give jigging a try tomorrow morning on Keuka for a few hours. I have all trolling gear, so I don't have lures for jigging right now. I know it's late notice, but is there anywhere near Addison/Corning area that would have some good jigging lures that I'd be able to pick up sometime today? Or maybe something that Walmart carries that works well for jigging? From what I've heard, our best bet would probably be to jig somewhere around the bluff? Feel free to PM me if you have any suggestions, and thank you to everyone in advance for the advice!!

Are you going to be trolling or casting? -
Thanks for the info, that's good to know. If I did go to Keuka it would probably be out of the South end, but I haven't seen or heard many good reports from the South end yet this year. Do you think my best bet would be to go to Seneca?
-
I may be out there as well. Can't decide whether I want to go to Seneca or Keuka (first trip out this year)

Here is an animated video on how to tie the Palomar knot. I have learned from others on here that instead of doubling your line and pinching it to initially put it through the eye of your swivel, it is best to put the end of your line through the eye of the swivel, pull 6-8" of line through, and then put the end of your line back through the eye of the swivel. If you double your line and pinch it together to go through the eye of the swivel it causes a weak spot in the line. http://www.netknots.com/fishing_knots/palomar-knot/

Most of you are probably hunters as well, so you'll probably appreciate this gun humor Top 10 reasons a gun is better than a woman. #10 You can trade an old 44 for a new 22 and even get money back! #9 You can keep one gun at home and have another for when you're on the road. #8 If you admire a friend's gun and tell him so, he will probably let you try it out a few times. #7 Your primary gun doesn't mind if you keep another gun for a backup. #6 Your gun will stay with you even if you run out of ammo. #5 A gun doesn't take up a lot of closet space. #4 Guns function normally every day of the month. #3 A gun doesn't ask , "Do these new grips make me look fat?" #2 A gun doesn't mind if you go to sleep after you use it. And the number one reason a gun is better than a woman. #1 YOU CAN BUY A SILENCER FOR A GUN

My wife left me... I don't understand. After our last child was born, she told me we had to cut back on expenses and I had to give up drinking beer. I was not a big drinker, maybe a 12-pack on weekends. Anyway, I gave it up but I noticed the other day when she came home from grocery shopping. The receipt included $45 in makeup. I said, "Wait a minute I've given up beer and you haven't given up anything!" She said, "I buy that makeup for you, so I can look pretty for you." I told her, "Hell, that's what the beer was for!" I don't think she'll be back

Just thought i would share the link to this. Bald Eagle nest with 2 little ones in the nest. Very cool to watch them bring fish and other small animals back to feed the little ones. http://hdontap.com/index.php/video/stream/bald-eagle-live-cam

Does anybody know if the South end of Keuka is open yet? Was thinking about heading out on Friday if it's open.
