Most memorable moment of the 2009 season?
choo-choo replied to Landshark's topic in Open Lake Discussion
My partner Rusty and I were fishing the Niagara bar the first week in may.....rigger fires, I grab the rod and fight a real nice 18 lb. spring king to the back of the boat, when out of nowhere a fearless coho grabs the slider spoon inches from the big king!!! Both fish go nuts , I'm screaming "net the big one"!!! Rusty makes the scoop, both samon in the net and into the boat!!!! A double the hard way....1 rod ,2 salmon!!! Lots of fun. -

Chris...I wear 2 pair of socks for biting flies...they can't bite through 2 pairs. Simple and easy, try it ....works great...steve -
Tom, I wonder if we would see many more natural fish,if we could limit the amount of wading, and drift boat anchoring, in the prime spawning gravel during and after, the peak of the fall run for salmon, and again in the spring for the steelhead, until all the eggs are hatched.. I shake my head in disbelief when watching those beautiful fish ,digging the gravel ,laying the eggs, with the males right there fertilizing them, then 3 clowns go wading right through the gravel, ,trashing the redds(nests) and destroying those fertilized eggs!!! I think we should at least give them a chance. steve

Glen... Thanks for the input and advice. I'm going to remove my pump and check it for a screen, and replace the pump if it doesnt have one .I'm gonna add a backup pump, and a manual pump too. Also, I plan on filling , then draining the entire bilge area ,while the boat is on the trailer,to hopefully flush any debris that might be in there .Then i'm going to be real careful about any ,and all debris, while on the boat, that might end up down in the bilge area . Man, i'm sure sorry you had to go through that nightmare , but as musky bob noted,"thanks for the reminder".It is a great wake -up call for all of us.....also....great job on those fish!!!! you guy's are awesome!!!! stay well and continued great fishing for ya's....steve -

Spoonfed-1 I just read about your ordeal, and it gives me the chills . I will add a manual pump and a high gpm pump with alligator clips for emergency use. Also, would it be a good idea for me,and everyone else for that matter,to actually "wet test" my bilge pumps ,by pouring a bucket of clean water in the bilge before leaving the dock?I currently just throw on the switch, and listen for the bilge pump motor hum before heading out. What do you think? steve -

"FX"....I fished sat. afternoon a little west, very slow for us also, landed 1 king about 12 lbs.,lost one , and missed one on a slider spoon.. that was it. We fished sunday morning same area, marked some fish, but only managed 1 9lb. steelie that hit our rigger down 80 feet.,over 200 ' of water and 1 lake trout about 7lbs same depths. We trolled east and found lots of bait 60 to 150 feet of water, but only 1 taker ,which we lost, small king.Man did it get hot and dead calm before the clouds and rain moved in. Headed home...hope you guy's do better over there this week..choo-choo

Wow what a report!! especially the wacky weather.I guess you started out wearing a snowmobile suit and ended up in a speedo! btw, what spoon did that 24 in steelie hit, after only being in the water for 45 seconds? was it a 42 second spoon? Please let us know. Keep the reports, and stories coming....awesome stuff. choo-choo -

Todd...the motor is a 2008 merc optimax,2 stroke. My friend took it back to the boat dealer first thing on Monday .They put it on the diagnostic computer, and problem pointed to the plugs! It turns out, that these newer outboards are programmed to mix extra oil into the fuel for better lubrication during break in period. The plugs fouled by hours of low rpm tolling on saturday.Learn something new everyday. Thanks for your concern, and mention this info to any friends with a new 2 stroke. Good luck fishin' ...steve -

I went up to Mexico Bay to try out a friends new boat....tough fishing .Saturday afternoon we headed out in front of the power plant, only bait marks were on the bottom in 120'....we caught 3 small lake trout ,biggest maybe 5 lbs.(yes lake trout, people we told thought we were fibbing).Sunday morning we tried to get back out there to search for salmon, but we developed engine problems .It, would only run at trolling speed, high idle,so we re-rigged for browns and idled back to the state launch, catching 4 browns(largest 5lbs.)and 1 small atlantic .All on sutton spoons and rapala sticks.Hopefully, the king fishing will heat up again for ya's real soon. It looks like a big push of fish is just off to your west. Good Luck,Steve. -

Fished the Niagara Bar..had A great time. Stayed inside a bit first sat. and sun. of loc. No browns ,only a few coho and lake trout.Put a laker on the board saturday fishing spoons,it got blown off the board by sunday.Decided to head out beyond the red can and take Longlines advice to me back in april on the "Questions about trolling" forum.Advice was simply "find the prey fish, and the predators will be close by". Wow,did we find preyfish out there! WE waypointed the pods, and figure eighted through the area...Rusty and I went 5 for 5 on kings monday,3 for 3 on kings tuesday, all on spoons,40' to 80' down, riggers and sliders, not one fish on flasher/fly or dodger/flies or dipsies . All kings were 13 to 18 pounds.Wednesday and Thursday things changed, we went 2 for 4 on kings wed.,and 5 for 5 kings on thurs.,our last day.Not one of those kings took a spoon!! They all hit Spin Doctor/flies off our mono dipsies ,170' and 190' back on 2.5 setting at 2.3 speed !!and 1 hit a bloody nose J plug !.All of those kings were 14lb. to 19.8 lb. .The 19.8 fish we weighed in on our 2 boat scales read about 21.5 lbs.! we thought we had a money fish,so we pulled our lines and headed in to Petroy marina for official weigh in.... only 19.8 on their scales...ours were way off...new scale on order!! The highlight of the trip was on Monday,we got a double the HARD WAY !! While bringing in a mid teen king, which hit the rigger ball spoon, got him wallowing in the prop wash,a 3 pound coho attacked the slider spoon, fish on!coho went nuts ,king went nuts and my partner Rusty yells"What do i do??" HELLO!! Net the BIG ONE !! A quick scoop, and rusty bagged both Fish!!! FUN !FUN FUN !

Janz.... great job on landing that 22.10 salmon!!! Think how close you guy's were to winning it all!!By the way ,how could they lower your salmons weight after they punched a hole in the gill ? Doesn't seem fair to me. Can a fish be weighed in at more than one official weigh station? I would have loved to see that king greyhounding across the surface like a sailfish...must have been awesome! -

Rod (fishtails) Ihavn't been on the computer since before the derby started. I've been looking through this past weeks posts...Read about your 21/22 lb. kings on your scale, but did not make 20 on the certified scale.I had the same thing happen on thurs.,may 7,. Fishing east of the red can, landed a beauty, weighed right at 21.5 on our 2 scales, immediatelly ran 6 miles in to the river for official weigh in, but salmon did not make the board, their scale said 19.8. Bummed me out,ran 6 miles back out...wasted fuel and fishing time ! Learned a lesson, i will have a new, super accurate scale on my boat next time!!
