Most saltwater wire reels are chrome over brass spools.(Penn hsp, old Penn Mariner 49l, Diawa 400hw)They are conventional reels (no level line). They use Monel wire. They mark the wire every 100ft. it has a sink rate of 10 to 1 every 100ft. will get you down 10ft.You can use a line counter with alum. spool just use braided line.
As everyone has said you should be fine with your rig.I would consider putting a kicker motor on your boat.Save on gas, less fumes, good piece of mind if something happens to your main motor. It was the best investment and improvement I have ever made to my boat.I would never fish the big lake without it.
I have used a Vexilar fl 8 for about 15 years. It doesn't have bottom zoom like the more expensive Vexilars, but does everything I need.I can see smelt hit my jig at 100' works for me.I sent my old one back for service once. Customer service was great, fixed my unit very cheap quick turn around time.Very happy with my Vexilar.I have not used any of the others but have been more than happy with my fl 8.
I saw this one in the selling section.knowfish

Congratulations Deaf Fisherman on some awesome fishing, sounds like you are having a blast. You are definitely right about epic, last weekend out of Long Island was nothing short of epic for us.
The fall run is in full swing. My friend Todd and I headed to Montauk Thursday10/7 fished Friday, Sat,Sun.We caught about 100 Stripers top 3 fish were37lbs 35lbs 32lbs.The last drift with our last 2 eels we got the 37lber and 32lbs double, what a way to end a great trip.We also had a 22 and 23lbs. double.Weather was great with calm seas.We also landed many Blue fish and some Sea bass.
Bobs boy is right on we fished Mon and Tues out of Sandy 100- 140 of water.100 down was hot.Best bait was NK 28 for us.Paddles and flys took mostly Rainbows
Fished Sandy after work 4:30 till dark.Started out in 230' caught some Rainbows on Crazy **** and 42 Spin Docs. 200' and 240' out on wire divers.Caught 3 or 4 up to 7.5 lbs.Nothing on riggers.Headed in to 140.I had a screamer crosses a couple lines makes a couple hundred ft. run. I start gaining he hits the surface he is off . We set back down my friend hits a nice 20lb.Ten minutes latter I get another ripper I drop that one to I have dropped Like 4 majors in the last 3 trips. It just hasn't been my year but that's fishing.Kevorkian down 100 over 140 was the ticket.
My friend and I put in a full day in at Olcott.Started on the inside.Cold water and lots of boats.Fished between 70 and 110 ft. After an hour or so with no luck we headed out to the 27 line. Not fast and furious but a good steady pick.Smaller Kings and Rainbows. We landed about 12 -14 fish and lost as many.We have never had so many dropped fish. Most fish came on wire divers Crazy **** and 42 sec. spin doctors did most of the damage. 200' and 240' out.Went back to the inside water for the night bite, got one skippy.Glad we went out deep.
http://www.cutco.com/products/product.j ... Group=5721 Best Knife I have owned for cleaning fish.Made in Olean NY. Life time warranty. Some people didn't rate it very well but I have had great luck with mine for many years.
I have been known to take chances but that would be way out of my comfort zone.Try open seat/trade a trip section. There is always people with extra room(especially with a few bucks for gas)
Great first Steelhead. We have been catching or best Kings on Dipsy Divers.180-220ft. On braided.160-200ft.on wire. This has been my best setup lately.Good luck and hold on tight.

Yes Dewey that was me at the dock that told you to run the Tohatsu.I would try the new solenoid but my guess is your starter is bad. Hopefully that is all. That was a lot of smoke when you jumped it.You can take the starter off and probably have it tested at auto zone for free. There are a few places around that rebuild starters as long as the winding's are not cooked.I would check the inline fuse also to make sure it isn't corroded in there. If you have tried the old starter trick of tapping the starter you could have broken the magnets and it could be stuck to your winding's.Some of the outboard starters the magnets are epoxied to the outer case, and easily break when tapping on the casing.Good luck and get it fixed while the fish are still comping at the bit.I saw a 1984 50 hp Force not sure if it would be the same as yours,on Rochester Craigslist for $150.00 with controls. Not running, no spark. It could be a good parts motor for you or you might be able to put your power pack in it and run it.Here is a few ideas hope something works for you.
