30 pounder I got on Thursday

We did an afternoon trip today, as frankly that’s all my hectic life could accomodate. I heard the king Fishing has been intermittently great, but that they bite in bunches and stop as soon as they start. We started the day looking for Browns, so by about 3 pm we were setting up in 30 fow. It was bath water in there, so we trolled north till we found 60 degree water in 75 fow. We worked that for a few hours and caught some brownies, nothing huge but fat healthy fish. They wanted 300 coppers and 180 dipseys with black spoons. There are NO fleas in there- how nice! By 5:30 we decided we wanted kings, so we pushed out to 100-150 and worked mag spoons and meat rigs. We did manage a few smaller kings (10 lbs and less) and missed 2 legit screamers, including one that burned out 400 feet of line, shot to the surface and jumped 3 feet out of the water... and spit the hook. Overall, a good short afternoon run. Back in 2 weeks. The Fishin' Physician Assistant

What's holding you back from fishing a tournament?

They might not be right on shore, but I have to imagine browns should be inside of 40-50 fow this time of year. Worth a shot. I might do the same tomorrow Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United

I like 3-6 fish boxes, with culling allowed. 6 is probably my favorite- a nice mix of skill and luck required to win those tourneys. I like the open concept with no observers too. I was a bit frustrated in niagara when I caught 12 salmon by noon and would have been 7th in the pros, but barely got 6th in the open. All because I lacked a 18-20 lb fish. Our niagara pro am- basically just Friday- was good action but relatively small Fish. I had a nicer class in the same water Thursday, so we stayed there. Never leave Fish to find Fish, as they say. We were 12/20 so good Fishing. I love fishing out west this time of year- so many salmon around, and the marina at newfane is awesome. Saturday was cancelled after 2 hrs. It shouldn’t have been, and we never got to go back out despite calming conditions Saturday and beautiful conditions on Sunday, the “blow off day”... 2 hrs isn’t skill, it’s luck imho. Niagara Pro am

We brought our boat out for our annual attempt at the niagara Pro am. We fish the open, so the plan was to target big salmon, if we could find them. The weekend before, we found a few good ones in 100, but the wind had blown every conceivable direction this week so I wasn’t sure what we would find. Thursday- we started in 150 fow out front, with the plan to take a long northwest troll. The inside water was ccccccold, and we didn’t mark squat, so we worked out deep. Our action for the day started at about 7:30 out in 270 fow with 4 salmon in about 10 minutes. They were decent fish, a few in the teens, on deep stuff- 100 rigger, 400 copper, 300 dipsey. We worked the rest of the day in 270-330 picking away at various classes of salmon- over a dozen bites in a few hours. The action was deep, 60-100 down for the most part. By 1130, the south wind was howling and I figured my biggest 3 would have weighed in the mid 30s. Not too bad. We came in with a solid plan for Friday. Friday- we ran right out to our waypoints from Thursday, about 300-350 just east of port. We had steady action on kings all day- 20 bites in all. The bite was much higher, mostly 25-50 down. Our leadcore was doing work and the 30-40 riggers with spoons were great. But the bigger fish from yesterday were gone. We could only find 2 year olds, and our score was 56, good for 6th. Tough to be mad about such good action, just sucks that our score didn’t reflect it. We would have had a classic box just shy of 200 pts. Oh well. Saturday- what a catastrophe. Our departure was delayed by 1/2 hour due to ne winds. We left at 5:30 and pounded into 2-3 footers. We stopped short to check out 200 fow, as a saw a few boats with bigger fish were in that the range on Friday. We didn’t see squat, so we trolled out to 350 fow, and immediately had 2 bites- we boated a 6 lb king and lost a legit major. Then at 8:20, with the lake laying down, I get a call that the ams are being called in. Not only are we done for now, the day and the tournament are done?!?!? No going back out in the afternoon, no using our blow day?? My one fish netted us a whopping 16 pts. Ugh It’s too bad how this ended. It shouldn’t have been called to begin with, though I understand why it was... but we certainly should have been able to go back out in the late morning or afternoon. 2 hours of fishing is by no means a reflection of skill- it only shows that you are lucky enough to set down right on active Fish. Why have a blow day if you aren’t gonna use it??? Also, I hear that someone who did VERY well Saturday may have called in and said how Unfishable it was.... I certainly hope this isn’t true. This is a cool tournament and a cool spring fishery. I’ll be back. I just hope a few common sense changes are made. The Fishin' Physician Assistant

It’s really too bad how things went today. Seems a delay would have made a ton more sense, even if we were already out. Beautiful all afternoon and gonna be nice tomorrow, sucks to have the results based on 2 hrs of fishing... when it didn’t have to be. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United -

Yeah, we’ve been standing the dipsey holder straight up and putting the dipsey in the holder furthest back too. Running just planers and riggers things are smooth The Fishin' Physician Assistant -

Our plan was to start the am brown fishing for the LOC, then slide out for kings as they are definitely around. We set up in 10 fow to the west and the water was gorgeous. Shockingly slow start, no bites for an hour- but then all hell broke loose. We had a mix of browns and reel smoking, spread ruining spring kings in a pocket of 47 degree water (10-15 fow) that kept us busy the next 2 hours. We ended up 5-8 inside, then slid out to 100 and did a king on a 140 dipsey, before packing it in at 10:15. Lots of kings around, from 10 to 150 fow. Man are they fun on light tackle. Dw ss and small stingers in green and glow did the damage for the most part. They wanted nothing to do with stick baits. Enjoy the video we made! The Fishin' Physician Assistant
