    I will start by saying that there are kings in the area, being caught 40-80 or so. Guys were getting them to the west, but they are getting them to some extent out of just about every port. Also, early am brown bite has been good. But that’s not my report. In a bit of a lifelong dream, I got my kids out fishing on the big lake for the first time! I had 4 kids (my kids, as well as a niece and nephew) so I needed 4 Fish guaranteed... so we beat up on lakers. Highlights including 3 kids getting their first trout and a 16 lb laker! We worked 70-110, cowbells and mag spoons did the trick- right out in front of port. I made a video- let me know what you think! The Fishin' Physician Assistant

    I threw most of them back, gave 3 to an old friend who can’t fish anymore, and made 2 into food for my dog. He loves it, and fish is good for him! I do it once or twice a year Some people love lake trout- I don’t. I eat salmon and steelhead regularly. My general rule is we only keep Fish if we have a specific reason for doing so.     Plan today was for nearshore browns, then slide out and hone my laker game- as I really want to get my kids (4 and 6) out soon for lakers. We fished west- from Maxwell to almost Hughes. Nada on browns. Flat calm and crystal clear water is no bueno. We tried about 15 different sticks/spoons. I did hear that guys that went east did better. Guess I zigged when I should have zagged. We bugged out of there at 9 am. On a positive note- laker fishing was fast and furious. Constant, steady bite on healthy fish. Gambler rigs were on fire. I literally cannot wait to get a calm day and get my kids out!! We kept a few (dog’s gotta eat), released the rest. Back at it soon! The Fishin' Physician Assistant

    FINALLY had our shakedown run- out latest one ever. First and foremost, boat and equipment all worked well. We had a steady pick of 3-7 lb browns all am- 15 bites in about 3.5 hours. We went east, but fish were caught in both directions. It was sporty out there, and chocolate milk colored water waaaaaaay out. We actually did the best with natural colored bay rats in like 10-20 fow on the outside of the mud. I heard of a few kings caught out in like 40 fow... wish I would have known that before I came in!! I ran a pretty basic setup of 6 top lines and 2-3 riggers- but the little browns were just trashing my spread. Tangles all day- weird. Also- first fish of the year was a 30 lb carp. No joke. It ate a black/silver bayrat. That’s a first for me!! The Fishin' Physician Assistant

    No hotels in Sodus. If you want to stay near Sodus, I would look into bed and breakfasts, or consider renting a cottage from one of the charter guys in the area- I know that Honey hole and magician both have houses they rent out Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United

    It’s all about the length of the knot. I think we use 10 inches from the front of the otter boat, and that works well? The second keel is only for running coppers in summer, as stated before Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United

    All fish I keep to eat are immediately bled and gutted. Then kept in an Ice water mixture. You wouldn’t believe how much better quality the meat is. I got to this point by research what commercial guys do, and paying attention to ocean charters. It always used to bug me that I could find seemingly fresher fish at the store (2-3 days old) than directly from the lake. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United

    Yeah, I clean as much as I can on the lake, and we rarely keep Lakers so it’s not too much of an issue for us. Cleaning fish on the lake saves even more time than you think, because then you can clean your boat one time on the way in and you are ready to tie ropes and grab your stuff and go as soon as you dock. No fuss, no mess! Cleaning at the docks is undoubtedly good publicity... that being said, Rick has an excellent point about the whole “hero” thing. In fact, I remember as a mate hiding our good catches so that other guys on that dock that may have struggled that day didn’t get made to look bad. Everybody can’t be great every day.     Couple times. He will go after whatever you want. I’ve only done ground fishing with him. Doing tuna this year though! The ground fish are plentiful, easy, and delicious.     So sad I missed it. Certainly things look a bit more hopeful with a very good 2016 year class. This winter hasn’t been too bad, so an average year class from 2017 and good survival of the 2016 year class will do a lot to getting us “out of the woods”. I’ve been emailing Steve Lapan and he seems more optimistic than years past, though cautious... bring on the spring! Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United

    Hey all- do you find there is any magic to leader length with copper. I’ve gotta be honest- I just sort of eyeball it- maybe like 30-60 feet. I had a guy on my boat last year that said he’s seen others run much shorter leaders, as the thought is it imparts better action on the setup. He said the longer the leader, the more stretch of the mono/floro, which made a lot of sense to me... just wondering what you all think The Fishin' Physician Assistant
