Sodus reports
rdebadts replied to Pappy's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
There have definitely been some majors 100-120, if you are willing to grind them out Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United -
Moved the boat to the oak this week, as we are on vacation. Fished for an hour this am with the wife and kids in 80-150, with blank screens and no hits. The water was cold, in the 40s down 70. This afternoon, we went out much deeper. We started in 180 on a ne troll. We found bait and fish in 250-300 a few miles east, and ended up 3-6 in about 3 hours. 4 bites came on mag silver/green nks, 3 on a 70 rigger and one on a 150 chinook dipsey. We took a shot on a 400 copper with meat and broke off a meat on a 280 dipsey. Mixed class of fish, with 1-2 year old kings and a steelie. We did have one legit screamer that broke us off. Should get out a few more times, and will report back with more... The Fishin' Physician Assistant

Same boat here chowder, but this week! Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United -
Yeah, olcott did a really nice job this year. I was impressed. The only reason anyone cares if you clean fish is because olcott is a TINY harbor that could get very stinky very very easily if everyone threw their fish in the harbor. It's a courtesy thing. Salmon are 160 and deeper. Temp was reeeeeealy deep (140 down). May be worthwhile to run way out deep Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United -
Wanna guess what the maximal efficiency is for the hydro turbines? Might it be right near that 9900 threshold, magically? If you think this was plan was anything but a big giveaway to shipping and hydro, you are sorely mistaken. It was chrony capitalism masked as an "environmentally friendly" plan that got rammed right down property owners throats. Some of the more vocal advocates of the plan have come right out and said that they don't think that "rich people" should have lakefront property and that that land would be better in the hands of the "public" Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United

I've run dipseys as far back as 450. I THINK that the chinook divers go deeper faster Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United -

Netting Techniques- lost 3 today -bad technique
rdebadts replied to garrymny's topic in Tackle and Techniques
We use a heavy rubber band to hold the net back. I am strongly against having anything hard mounted to the net, as I once had a nice king pop back out because the basket couldn't expand when we went to pull it out of the water- the net got caught on it. The more hardware you have, the more chance for error. Netting is all about technique. That net shouldn't touch the water until the fish is calm and ready to net... if he's going nuts, he's not ready to net. I go in at a 45 degree angle, head first, and quickly in a downward motion to go under the fish. I either hold the excess net with my finger, or use a medium sized rubber band. Beautiful day out of Sodus on Sunday. Flat calm seas after the big ne blow. We started straight out front in 120 fow, on a ne troll. Not much happening inside, so we moved out to 200-250, and had a real nice pick of 1-2 year old kings, with a bonus 20 lb 9 oz laker! We caught the laker, a boat and personal best, on a mag spoon down 90 over 220 fow. That bite dried up at about 8;30, so we pointer her north and got into some more small kings and steelhead in about 500 fow. Ended the day 9-13, in by 11 am. Nice day. The wanted mag green and glow spoons, off riggers and 400 coppers. Temp was about 80-100 down. My dipseys were again completely worthless, and not a single bit on meat or flies (we ran one of each all day). THEN on the run in, all the sudden the boat started violently vibrating... after some investigating, turns out we sheared off a fin of our port prop!?!?!?!? Not sure if we hit something or what? So strange. Had to limp in on one engine and made it to the loc weigh in with just 7 minutes to spare!! Be back at it in 2 weeks (once repairs made and oil changed)! The Fishin' Physician Assistant

Yeah, kings are all over the place right now! Though, the biggest ones are still in Canada! The top of their leaderboard is all 30+ with a 35+ leading! Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United

Sodus pro am
rdebadts replied to rdebadts's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Screamer had a 92 pt box, those who placed were 82 and above Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United -
Sodus pro am 2017- we fished Friday-Sunday. The word was all about kings, so Friday we started in 100 fow out front on a nw troll. We pretty much immediately found fish, scattered from 120-240. we worked out front to 4 miles west, and we had 3 pockets holding fish. Temp was high (70 down was 48-51) but our hits mostly came deeper. We had a nice box of 2 year old kings, with a steelhead and a brown. Cutbait on copper and a mag carbon 14 on a rigger caught all of our fish. We had maybe a upper 60s box for bff, but most of the high placing boats had upper 80s and 90s, so I didn't bother weighing in. I felt good about our program as a lot of the boats that did well were working 120-200 just like us... we just needed to get the bigger fish to bite. Saturday brought a whole new game. It was absolutely miserable, with strong nw wind and big water. We started off with all the right bites working 160-200... by 7:30 we had had 7 screamers on, but we boated freaking ONE of them. We had one teen in the net that came out with a big wave, and lost the others due to some strange freak stuff . We did 2 more small kings, then the bite shut down for us completely at 9 am. We wouldn't have another bite for the rest of the day. Again, we were in good water as some of the better boxes came right around us in 120-220 straight out front. Some really good scores from both the pros and ams considering how awful the conditions were. Sunday was a gorgeous day. We set down in 120, and trolled around looking for the fish from the last 2 days, but they were gone! We finally found a bunch of active 1 and 2 year old kings in 270 just east at about 9 am. We did 8 salmon, but just had no size. A mag carbon 14 on the 90 rigger was a stud (the center rigger with a carbon 14 took 18 shots alone this weekend), and took all but 2 of our bites Sunday. I guess the bigger fish came in 500 fow, and I saw boats stretched from Hughes to Sodus in that water. Again, some really nice scores today. It was apparent to me that the bigger fish were out deeper this weekend (300-500 fow). Fun tournament. I'm now convinced I am cursed on Saturday for the Sodus pro am- this is the third year in a row that we fished well on Friday, bombed and Saturday, and fished well Sunday. Rochester 7/1

I will be at Sodus! Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United -
We fished the Monroe county pro am today out of the genesee river. I have never fished Rochester, so wasn't sure what to expect. We started off long pond in about 100 fow- we ran spoons off the diggers (65-100), dipseys with meat or flies back 250+, and 400-500 coppers with meat. We had pretty decent action to start- we had a nice steelie jump us off right behind the boat on a 80 rigger, we boated a good salmon and a nice brown on a double.. then it all fell apart. We missed 2 shots on copper with meat, then had another double where a nice laker spit the hook JUST before I could scoop, then we had a brown fall THROUGH the net (apparently it had a hole?!?!). Then we tangled 2 long coppers. Before it all was said and done, it is 8 am, we've had 8 bites, and 2 freaking fish in the box! We easily should have had 5 in the box- we lost 3 fish within 10 feet of the boat. We just never recovered after that. Our best program was long coppers off of braddocks bay in about 140-180. Riggers with small spoons down 70-110, and meat deep took shots. I had multiple hits on pretty Much every rod- except my dipseys. The lack of action on the dipseys was perplexing. We would have a very slow pick the rest of the day on small salmon. They just weren't big enough to make a difference, and I didn't even bother weighing in. The good news? Tons and tons of bait. Also, the public launch is nice and I like the port of Rochester. The Fishin' Physician Assistant

We run ugly sticks almost exclusively. Love them!! We use 8'3 medium light for riggers and boards- they work awesome, never fail, and are light enough to actually enjoy the fight with a small fish. And they handle a big salmon just fine! Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United

Not too light at all. The max leader I use is 17 on my main lines. I do use 20 or 25 lb leaders on by wire lines, but only because wire does stretch at all and the mono ends up acting as a shock absorber Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
