Continuity/Fish Doctor ============== TRIP OVERVIEW ============== Date(s): 6/4/11 Time on Water: 5:30-9:45 Weather/Temp: Cool and cloudy Wind Speed/Direction: W SW Waves: 1 or less Surface Temp: 49 in close, 47 out deeper =============== FISHING RESULTS =============== Total Hits: 11 Total Boated: 7 Species Breakdown: 1 laker, 1 atlantic, 2 baby salmon and the rest steelhead Hot Lure: red stuff on top (alpena diamond, creamsickle, small red DW SS), dirty white boy Boat Depth: 70-180 Lure Depth: top 80 feet, mostly a surface bite ==================== SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS ==================== Did a short morning again out of Sodus. Tried for browns (albeit not very hard) with nothing to show by 6:30, so we pointed north. Found a nice scum line and about a 2 degree break in 75 FOW and immediately had steelhead action on it with the red surface lures, but they were all short. Looking for bigger fish, we pointed it north, and did a slow pick of slightly larger steelies with an atlantic (~23 inches) and a laker (6 lbs) on top, and a few small salmon down lower. We never got outside of 200', and 170-180 seemed to be the magic number. We were working mostly west of everyone else today, just west of maxwell. Nothing was caught on anything bigger that the DW SS size. Where the heck are my salmon? The only ones I have caught the last few weeks are dinks. Sorta got spoiled last June with our salmon fishing, so I am looking forward to seeing the mommies and daddies again. Steelhead jumps are great, but I prefer to see reels screaming! Of note, in 70-150 FOW, that 60-120 down looked pretty good..... Pics to come I think...

Browns after springtime...
rdebadts replied to joejv4's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
Browns in my experience are usually in less than 100 fow all year long. As the water gets warmer they just get deeper. This time of year 30-70 fow can be awesome, from 10 foot sown to the bottom. And remember that browns will gladly stay in warmer water...55+ is ok... [ Post made via Mobile Device ] -
Surface bite - I-Bay
rdebadts replied to smalltauk's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
And in addition to what Steve said when it is calm and clear like today use long leads and light line. Planers are a must out there! Small spoons of the dw ss or smaller size seem to work the best for me [ Post made via Mobile Device ] -
Fishing Report Your Name / Boat Name: continuity fish doctor Total Hits: 9 Total Boated:6 Species Breakdown: equal mix browns and steelies Hot Lure: red and orange dw ss and alpena diamonds on top Boat Depth: 8-30, then 180 fow Lure Depth: all on top SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS Decent am in sodus again. A better morning brown bite in 10-30 fow to the west. That died off when the fog burned off, so I went out deep. Did three steelies out in 180 fow, but the bite was much slower for me than during the week. Completely a spoon bite for me today, all small red stuff. ==================== [ Post made via Mobile Device ]

help with browns this weekend
rdebadts replied to kchamp's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Light line! I can't stress that enough- 10-14 lb test is plenty. Browns are in close 5-15 fow still. Flat lines and planers work. Otherwise read the technique page for more info [ Post made via Mobile Device ] -
Fishing Report Your Name / Boat Name: ============== TRIP OVERVIEW ============== Date(s): 5/25 Time on Water: 5 Weather/Temp: 9:45 Wind Speed/Direction: 5 NE Waves: 1 Surface Temp: 48 in tight, 44 out deep Location: West of the bay, in front of Boller pt LAT/LONG (GPS Cords): =============== FISHING RESULTS =============== Total Hits: 11 Total Boated: 9 Species Breakdown: 2 browns, 3 lakers, the rest steelies Hot Lures: Anything red, particularly small red stingers and alpena daimonds Boat Depth: shoreline, then 180-200 Lure Depth: on top to 30 down ==================== SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS ==================== Nice productive short morning out of Sodus. Just me and one other guy. Did three brownies in tight by 6:30, then trolled north. Did nothing until we got to 180, then it was a very steady pick of lakers and steelies on top, with a few hits on 20-25 foot rigger. All small red stuff for the most part. I think a glow small stinger did a few too. The lakers were very nice quality, and we got one quality brown and one big steelie, the rest thrown back to fight another day. The water is cccccold, they were all in 44 degree water. Warmest water i found all day was 48. Friggin east wind will screw this up I am sure. Is it really the end of may? Coulda fooled me! I heard of a few salmon in 50-90, no dice for me though.

Guys I have a reel that I use for topwater stuff (browns, steelies) that is crapping out on me, and another that I fear could be close. What does everyone here use for light rods and lighter line (14 lb) for the planers? I was thinking of going with sealine 27s, but wanted to know what everyone else uses. Thanks in advance... Abe

Lake Ontario Spring Lake Trout???
rdebadts replied to MarkNY's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
In that area all the way to sodus i find 100-140 right on the bottom to be most productive. Cowbells and flashers as he said but also mag green glow spoons work [ Post made via Mobile Device ] -
Sodus 4/30/11
rdebadts replied to rdebadts's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Yes, but the Sodus Guys are slaying them now too. I cut my bite in half at least by getting out way too late and friggin boat issues. Plus, I didnt even fish today because I was chasin turkeys! I'll get the numbers here in Sodus, I have no doubt about that. Then I will steal all of your kings in August!! And my boat isn't exactly trailer friendly... You love Sandy creek don't you? Give me a call and I'll hop on with you again. Perhaps you can convert me yet! -
Kooter/Oak/April 30 2011
rdebadts replied to Kooter469's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
These trout are some of the most frustrating but rewarding fish to go after. Congrats on the successful day, and here is to many more in the near future! If you are at the oak this August I will hopefully see you there! -
Fishing Report Your Name / Boat Name: Continuity/Fish Doctor ============== TRIP OVERVIEW ============== Date(s): 4/30/11 Time on Water: 6:45-12 Weather/Temp: sunny and warm Wind Speed/Direction: 5-10 out of NW Waves: 1 or less Surface Temp: 44 at the warmest Location: LAT/LONG (GPS Cords): =============== FISHING RESULTS =============== Total Hits: 7 Total Boated: 5 Species Breakdown: browns, 1 laker Hot Lure: gold and black thunderstick, jointed blue and silver rapala, glow NK cowbell ==================== SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS ==================== FINALLY got out for my shakedown cruise. The weather (gale force winds specifically) had blocked my first 4 attempts. I got out WAAAAAAAY too late because I overslept, which I havent done in a long time... so, we finally set up at almost 7 in front of the old lighthouse. Did 5 quick brownies from the trailer park to just west of boller. Somehow we caught these fish between my boat overheating due to a sticky thermostat and a friggin gear cut out that was acting up (we fixed both out there on the water). Stalling in 7 FOW= not fun. Weird day. The browns were all cookie size, but certainly fun on light tackle. There was decent color in close, but alot of boats and tough to stay in there. Then at 8 it just shut right off. They are still in very tight and the water is COLD. So, after an hour of nothing, I went out to harrass some slime balled forkies... We did manage one nice 12.7 Laker that was on the LOC board for about a minute. A cowbell in 126 FOW straight out front did that one.. Not as productive as it should have been but at least the boat is figured out and we got some fish.... Much more to come I hope!!

Try fishing off the bay bridge. Can always catch perch and crappie under the bobber this time of year. [ Post made via Mobile Device ]

trolling line question
rdebadts replied to shooter0's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
A 10-20 foot leader with 12-14 lb mono should be fine, then you don't have to buy floro which would cost 15 bucks or so... in addition to what don said [ Post made via Mobile Device ] -
The south end in 10-15 fow can be on fire this time is year with fat spawning mommies! [ Post made via Mobile Device ]

Raymarine and humminbird both put out good dual units. I have a furuno 585 that I absolutely love... I have a handheld how by garmin that is plenty sufficient for a rec guy if you wanna save some money [ Post made via Mobile Device ] -

Favorite spoon for northern pike
rdebadts replied to Believer's topic in Musky, Tiger Musky & Pike (ESOX)
The poonie spoon with a red bead did a few decent ones for me this year. Otherwise a copper doctor spoon is my favorite [ Post made via Mobile Device ] -
Me and a buddy sorted through over 100 to keep 17, all over 9 inches. Bigger stuff, especially niagaras on tipdowns, did the best. We were in 15 fow south east [ Post made via Mobile Device ]

As far as the Releases are concerned- I have had nothing but good experience with the black releases. If you crank them down tight (which you should anyways), you can immediately see a change in the rod or cable angle that indicates that you have a skipper hanging. I can count on one hand the number of fish that I have "dragged to death" a fish, no matter how small, in my trolling career. And thanks for the insight Vince; heres an example of a fish that now has 2 holes in his lips...
