Fish the warmest water you can find in the spring. 54 is within a kings comfort zone and a good place to find bait. Fish the top of the water column in this situation and you should fair well. Top 35 fow was good to us this year. You will find kings deeper too, but I'd target the top 50fow unless you are not getting bites or see hooks deeper. Watch the at the bar videos from a few weeks ago on the instant reports section. His lines were pretty high most of the spring, at least early in the morning.

trolling and the current?
hawkeye625 replied to hawkeye625's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
Depends. Generally across and slightly upstream, but if others are catching fish casting downstream I try to make some adjustments to catch those fish too. -
Dodger, I put them in my gps as a stop sign to avoid it. We were out for the pro am and just stayed away from that area. Didn't want to chance losing a probe. Thanks for posting coordinates, I'm sure its going to save a lot of tackle. Sorry to see you guys got knocked out of 1st for the derby, guess the fish gods want to see you back out there next year! That format is nice. I don't recall seeing any threads like this started on the East end tournaments..do you get any complaints? -

You have every right to voice your opinions. I think it's unprofessional and ignorant to tell a newcomer to take their ball and go home. Don't like it don't fish it? Really guys? Thought the whole point of the rec open was to bring new guys into the tourney scene. Now you tell them don't fish it if they don't like it? I wonder why participation is low? -

Size of your boat and a captains license won't help you boat 20 pounders. Time on the water and a little luck will. Just enter and fish. Anyone can win. Box 3 mid teen fish and you'll more than likely win some cash. -
Make sure to keep the wire tight when spooling.

No backing, electrical tape wire to spool, 1000 ft will fill the spool. Most wire comes in 1000ft spools.

If it takes the blue connector cabelas in Wheeling WV had several in the bargain cave for around $25.00 a few weeks ago. I see they have them on the site for $49 to $99. Might be worth a call to the store to see if they'll ship one. The ones in the bargain cave were all new, old stock. I picked one up for my hds unit for a spare.

I had same trouble trying to link HDS5. Seemed easy enough but could never get it to work. Called raymarine and Lowrance, both said it should work with no other connections. Finally gave up on it. Let us know if it works for you.

What site are you guys getting the satellite imagery from? I can't seem to find one good enough to see the plume. -

Good job, we had trouble all last week keeping kings buttoned up. I'd say we were about 60% for the week. -
trolling and the current?
hawkeye625 replied to hawkeye625's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
Thanks guys, I do try to repeat what works. I'll have to try moving my spread around a little. I do know a few times we couldn't buy a bite on an east troll but the boat beside me was doing well. When we turned around we started popping rods. Not sure what they were doing different, we had the same surface speeds but they caught fish in both directions. Might have been as simple as moving rods up or down a few feet. Makes sense now that you guys mention it. Faster surface speed would move my lures up in the column regardless of direction. -
trolling and the current?
hawkeye625 replied to hawkeye625's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
To clarify, I am talking about downspeed which I try to keep the same in either direction. Should I be looking to increase downspeed too? I know the boat needs to move faster, but do my lures need to move faster as well? -
Do you guys have better success trolling into current or with the current, and do you adjust trolling speed from one direction to the other to entice more bites? It seems the fish only want to bite for us going in one direction some times, just wondered if there's a trick to getting bit going the other way.

big boards and traffic
hawkeye625 replied to hawkeye625's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
Yea that's the kind of thing that was being talked about on the radio. The boats under discussion Wednesday were from Canada, not Erie. All in all though, the bar wasn't too bad all week. I've seen it worse. -
No problem...that's what this site is all about. People helping each other. You'll get a lot of different information and will have to work out your own program but it sure shortens the learning curve. With what you have I'd run 2 braid divers with Flasher flys and 2 riggers w/spoons stacked or cheated.

I've only fished the Oak a few times but there are a few landmarks people refer to regularly. Johnson creek, pump house, flats, silos, glass house, devils nose. Someone else may chime in here but Johnson creek and the pump house are on the west side of port and the rest are on the east side. I think they run in the order listed heading east.
