Reels/rods for trolling lake ontario
hawkeye625 replied to perchhound's topic in Tackle and Techniques
I run daiwa salitist's for copper and wire dipsys. Shimano charter specials for down riggers. Lever drags on the charter specials are very nice for the riggers. Also run ugly sticks for riggers and copper. So far my saltist's have been flawless as have the ugly sticks. -
You can run it just under the surface and check it against your gps. Chances are very good that it won't match exactly but it will give you an idea if it's reading fast or slow. My depthraider reads .5 slower than my gps. On the surface if my gps reads 2.6 my probe is 2.1. I keep the probe at 2 to 2.3 most of the time when trolling. Surface gps speed can vary from 1.5 to 4 while keeping the 2 to 2.3 downspeed. 10lb is too light for the probe. I'd go with whatever your riggers max at or at least a 12lb. The 10lb is going to give you too much blowback.

Lakeview motel in Youngstown has cabins and some newly renovated larger cottages that I highly recommend. Cottages have a couple of bedrooms and would be perfect for multiple couples. Clean and reasonable. Bring your own food and cook right there. Also have a freezer for you catch. No affiliations but I do spend a lot of time there during the summer. We've tried other places and find them to be the cleanest and friendliest around.

Average fish per day?
hawkeye625 replied to hawkeye625's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
I have to agree, 17 fish is a great average no matter what species or multiple, I wasn't talking kings only. We boated over 20 fish a day 2 years ago but we got a lot of steelys and spent all day on the water every day we fished. To average 17 on a 8 hr charter is awesome. I'd imagine that includes many coho but who really cares. They put up a fight too. My post wasn't a dig at Dan at all, I just was looking for an idea of what other boats were catching on a daily basis. I was sort of hoping to get some response from charter captains from Lake O to get a better idea of what the lake I fish yields from the pro's. The 1st one matters and look at my facebook isn't really the respone I had hoped for, but it's better than not posting I guess. -
zeroing in on salmon early
hawkeye625 replied to Hooked on Kings's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
Agree with Tom B.. More than likely fishing under them. Early am kings will come in close to feed and move out as morning progresses. Probes are great but always remember kings will come out of preferred temps to feed, especially early am and dusk. Never hurts to stop in say 40 to 50 fow on your way out to 100 and look around for bait and hooks. If your screen looks good, drop lines, if not motor out a little more and take another look. Some days we never get to 100fow. -
Agree 100%. The money you will save in lost tackle will pay for the reels. Make sure to keep the wire spooled tight and check it frequently for nicks/loose strands. If it looks bad cut it and re tie.

trout and salmon fishing
hawkeye625 replied to f.bishop2008's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
If you run a boat under 22 ft I'd recommend going out with Matt from wet net charters. He fishes out of his lund year round and knows how to put fish in the boat. That would give you a better idea of how to fish out of your own rig, assuming you have a smaller boat. He'd be fishing the Niagra river this time of year (out of Lewiston). He has helped me out over the years just shooting the breeze at the launches. Also cost less than a bigger charter, if that matters to you. All other mentioned charters will also put you into fish, just feel he'd be a better option for you if your looking to fish on your own down the road. River fishing should be good right now (lakers, steelhead, browns) Be careful, this sport if very addicting.... -

Preferred speed while trolling
hawkeye625 replied to Guppy35's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
start to zig zag if you feel your not getting bit as much as you would like, time frame is up to you. If you get bit on the inside, slow down, if outside gets hit speed up. also remember it might not be your speed, when you speed up your dipsys/longlines will rise, slow down they will fall. could be depth and not speed. sometimes just the erratic action of the zig zag gets em going. -
Preferred speed while trolling
hawkeye625 replied to Guppy35's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
I go by my depthraider most of the time. 2.0 to 2.3 for salmon/steelies on the lower side for browns and lakers 1.5 to 2. Generally my gps speed is higher by .5mph can be much higher in currents, but generally .5 mph. Also do some zig zagging and pay attention like longline said as to which lines get bit. That tells you whether to speed up or slow down on any given day (fish are moody sometimes). Remember all probes don't read at the same speed. Seems like my depthraider reads slower than fish hawks, doesn't matter to me as long as I can find a speed and can repeat it. Just remember when someone tells you they're going 2.0 at the ball, their unit may not read the same as yours. Pay close attention to bends in your rods and bubbles coming off your rigger lines when you get bit. It's always good to know what your looking for when your electronics crap out, can save a day on the water. -
See them all the time at Olcott harbor and Wilson in the summer, got to the docks and look around you'll find them.

I run 9' bw ugly sticks 1101...same rods I use on my riggers for all fish. Light enough for browns, yet stout enough for kings. Run shimano charter special reels, top shot my 30lb main line with 12lb for stick baits. Also use the walleye boards with this setup with no issues.

Thanks JD. That's what I was looking for. I'll have to play with the zoom feature a little more. Seems like the best way to learn features of a unit is to take them one at a time. I ran for the 1st week on the cruise feature, couldn't figure why we didn't mark any fish....then I ran for a while on fishing trying to figure out why I couldn't adjust the gain...finally got a little wiser and took the manual on the boat...but it's hard to read and try to fish at the same time. Limited time on the water doesn't help either.

J.D. I'm getting pretty much the same as the video from the hull truth link. Set mine up the same as you are doing with the gain in the auto off mode. Once in a while I'll let it run in fishing mode and it seems to do ok, but usually like to tweek the gain in manual mode. Also have all the other gizmos turned off. From the sounds of things mine is working fine, just thought the picture should be a little more crisp. As long as its marking fish I'm happy. I'll try playing with the interference settings as soon as weather allows. As far as the deep fish, maybe I need to zoom in a little more or something. I'll see clutter down deep but rarely see the fish archs or marks I would think are fish. I will get streakers shooting up from the depths, but never really mark them before they start climbing. Thanks for your help. Jeff

So I put a furuno 620 in my boat 2 years ago with the airmar ducer. It seems to mark bait and fish o.k. but I almost never mark deep fish say over 100ft and the fish I mark say under 80 ft show up more like a blob than a clean hook (looks digitized if that makes sense). I've seen some screen shots on here from other brands and they look pretty clean compared to my unit. Just wondered if it was my unit, ducer placement, or an adjustment I'm missing. I play with the gain alot and just cant seem to clean it up. The manual leaves a little to be desired and wondered if anyone has some tips that might help. A unit with this price tag should have a better picture IMO. Almost has to be a setting I'm missing. My old Lowrance 520 had a much cleaner picture even out of adjustment. I do mark riggers and even cheaters so I know the unit is working, it's just fuzzy. Thanks, Jeff

Lake Ontario for salmon and trout. Overheard some guys talking at the LOTSA and they were talking mags in the spring. I see a ton of emeralds around the docks during the spring and thought smaller might be better. Never tried the small spoons but might this spring.
-
Just wondered what size spoons you guys normally run from the spring to fall. We normally run standard size throughout the year and throw a mag or 2 out off the coppers. Just wondered if any of you run the smaller sizes and when (like the DW wd size walleye spoons). Or if you normally run mags. Thanks, Jeff

Wonder why the money from unfilled slots never rolls to the next derby? or isn't raffled off at the awards ceremony? We all have a ticket number right? It could be divided up among daily winners too! Just a thought. The $$ should go back to the players and not the house....

Try calling him. 607 535 2390 from an old post. -
That was our 2nd year fishing Lake Ontario. Fog was so thick it was scary. That was the only year I remember the Salmon division not getting filled in the spring LOC.
