  1. All good advice, but if you are hunting a metro area try a distressed kitten call. They love cats. Keep the wind in your favor and stay alert..some times they come in and take back off in a matter of seconds. My buddy uses a SBE Benelli with heavy shot coyote loads and says he's killed em out to 80+ yards. We also always have a rifle and shotgun, prefer centerfire loads over a rimfire. Good luck and kill as many as you can...PA is trying to pass a $25 bounty on them...started off with just a few and now you can hear them almost everywhere when the fire whistle blows at 6:00.
  2. Man giving up a nut to fish? You guys are off the hook, If you're that serious about the great fishing over there....just move, at least for your slow months....see alot of boats docked in Wilson for the spring that aren't there all year...guess you could move over there in the fall too right? Or maybe give up the left and move out east...
  3. Hooked mine up to my hds5. Don't use any of the fancy features, but hooked it up anyhow. If memory serves me right there were only 4 wires but colors were different from raymarine to lowrance. Had to read each manual a couple times to get it right. It should hook up to any gps with NMEA capability, you could always call raymarine to double check.
  4. I've done business with them a few times. Fast shipping and good communication.
  5. I had a raymarine spx5 installed last summer and loved it (other than noise) until the 1st week of June this year. The motor burnt out in less than 1 year but was covered under warranty and the new motor got me through the rest of this year. Hopefully this one will last. I had Wilson boatyard do the install and he did a great job. However, left more than one message when the motor went out and still have not gotten a return call, that's been since the 1st week of June. In my experience, I can't say I would recommend the boatyard if you're looking for customer service after the install. Called Raymarine and they sent me a new motor which I installed myself. Not too bad if you're mechanically inclined. I found hodges marine to have the best price by far on any autopilot and most electronics if you decide to do it yourself.
  6. Go pro has an editor for free on their site that works pretty well. I've been playing with it a little and it seems pretty user friendly.
  7. Ray, Yes I peeled the coating off and soldered to a ring connector. I have the boat home now so I might try and mess with it some more, but will more than likely go with another coated cable. My opinion so far is the same as bigblues and G-Daddy. I might try and get in touch with torpedo to see what they have to say.
  8. Anybody have any luck with the torpedo probe cable? I bought some last summer and tried it with little luck, soldered it like directions say but still loose signal frequently. I actually put my coated cable back on for most of this year until it got cut off and had to try the torpedo cable again in a pinch. Still having the same problem of loosing signal, but I do like the cable not having coating on the outside (my crew is hell on coated cable). Is there a secret method to termination I'm missing? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jeff
  9. Bill's diner. Reasonable and good portions. TR corner store in wilson has good subs and pizza also reasonble and pretty quick, also have gas and ice.
  10. Also agree with Rick. The water changed almost every weekend we came up. One week it would be 45 degrees in 50 fow and the next it would be 65 down 90. We had to hunt for fish almost every week but once we found them they were eager to bite. Probly my best year for majors, many in the mid 20's and up...also many with the adipose fin in tact. My thoughts were the weather had them scattered. This year seems to be a couple of weeks behind last year, for us anyhow. I guess the runs in the rivers will give us a better idea of how many fish are actually left, but I'm guessing there'll still be good numbers.
  11. Good point Jason, I'll be wishing someone was crowding me out in another month or 2, waiting for April!
  12. I can understand that in combat fishing, but there were only 10-15 other boats within maybe 4 miles. Our 2 boats were the only boats working that area for hours and this guy cut between us and set up in my spread. No need or reason with no traffic around for miles. Just tryin to give guys that might not know a heads up. Some guys may have sent a flare their way.
  13. Anyone know where to find results, just curious how the fishing was over there.
  14. You can clearly read registration numbers on the other boat! You can talk to the people in the other boat! You can see a hit on the other boats downrigger rod and are able to tell them they have a fish on! You run over a short copper to get beside the boat! You deploy your dipsy's into the other boats spread! You are well within where he would normally run planer boards! You cut between passing boats, running over a hooked fish and both of their sets! The guy in the other boat asks if you'll net his fish! FYI...to the guys that pulled this on me Friday....it is understandable sometimes in heavy traffic, but when there are only 2 other boats within 1/2 mile, very poor sportsmanship on your part. Not sure why you felt the need to cut between us while running and set down on top of me, not cool with no other traffic around. Next time you might want to circle around the boats you see hooked up, set up a couple hundred yards away and make a pass thru where they just came from, less stress for everyone involved and you might actually catch something.
  15. Think they are reacting to the "deck hand job" not your set up...Heck of a way to book charters!!! Slow fishing but at least you get a happy ending.

  17. Nice fish congrats on your 1st mature. Let the addiction begin.
  18. I'm glad you hear it all worked out for you guys, as many of us told you it would. Putting the logic together, if the parking lot is full in August, when do you think a takle shop would take inventory, order supplies, and stock its shelves? My guess is he does it a month before, as well as book his guest house, do his other paperwork, weigh derby fish, answer the phone to give reports, and be in the shop for the few people that are fishing in July asking questions on where to go and what to use.... The parking lot might not be busy in July, but I'd bet money, Wes would tell you he was very busy in July getting ready for August. As you said, all is resolved...other than any negative impact this thread had on 2 local businesses that voluntarily run a weekly derby. Ever wonder why no one wants to do anything for free anymore?
  19. Anybody know if they are still in business? Website is gone and phone numbers I have don't work anymore, got an animal clinic instead of Tony. Thanks, Jeff
  20. cush it -- inside diameter large 1 7/8 med 1 1/2 sm 1 1/8 cabelas has the large in the bargain cave online for under $20.
  21. Did not fit over an okuma dipsy rod, but I think the large one should.
  22. Works great, actually have 2 of the medium size and everyone on board has liked them so far, except for the macho guys...of course.
  23. no room for backing 1000 ft fills the spool.
