  1. IMO the saltist has a better drag from the factory...a size 30 will hold 1000ft of 7 strand with no backing...thats what I run for wire. I had 40's set up last season with 150yds of 50lb power pro backing behind 1000 ft of wire only because I got them dirt cheap, now the 40's have 300 copper on them, I found a couple 30's cheap on ebay over the winter. Ran them all last year and so far this year with 0 issues. Check classifieds on here, I think there were some new ones a week or so ago. If not watch ebay...occasionally you will pick new ones up cheap, if you aren't in a hurry. Some guys like tekotas, have one and don't care for the drag at all. Maybe I got a dud, but its sticky right out of the box.
  2. lighthouse 716-778-7270 b&b across from marina 716-778-7767 pete guest house 716-778-0713 (slippery sinker) lakeview motel 716-791-8668 (other side of wilson but only 10 min drive to olcott - closer to wilson tuscarora launch) Also have a couple of cottages they rent right on the lake. If it matters, there are no showers or a/c in the b&b but she does have a tub and is very reasonable.
  3. What seems fishy to me is 2 guys joining a forum after they win a weekly just to complain about not getting paid overnight! Both of you have been members for less time than you've been waiting to get paid...HMMMM? I could see complaining after a month, but come on guys, really??? How long do you wait for your tax refund? You do know this is a busy time of year up there right? Have you ever been to Olcott when Wes wasn't in the Sippery sinker or Jim or Karen weren't at the boat doctor? Do you really think they are running away with your "big" jackpot? How far do you think they would get on your winnings? And do you really think they would jeapardize their businesses over a lousy couple bucks? Really?
  4. Also agree with Tim, that being said my biggest fish 2 weeks ago came out of 60 degree water. The thermocline will show up a little lighter than a rigger line on your graph, it shows a light blue on my hds5. If your not seeing it the water might be too mixed up from winds or your gain may not be set high enough.
  5. Nice fish, congrats on the catch.
  6. Ask at the local bait shop, they usually have an idea of what is going on. I usually start out in 60 FOW and check the down temp, if its too warm I'll keep heading deeper til I find decent down temp and work from there looking for bait on my fish finder all the way. Generally when you find pods of bait the fish won't be far off. Watch for slicks or temp breaks, great place to start if you can find one, not too hard if the lake is flat but a little chop will make it harder to see. In general, we head north west from about 60 FOW until we get bit and work the area once we find some fish. If you don't get into fish, don't be afraid to keep trolling into deeper water.
  7. We run 30lb big game without too many problems....last weekend the 20lb was a mess with fleas but the 30lb was not bad at all.
  8. We run 30lb big game between the dispy and flasher with no snubber...the mono seems to stretch enough to keep from breaking off on the initial hit. Ran snubbers for half a season and seemed to loose more fish with them. As others said....personal preference, set your drags right and you should be fine.
  9. Nice job Rick, I have to agree with the above posts, you guys certainly derserve the win!! You always have great reports that are spot on, unlike most. Congrats.
  10. Black and clear have been good for me.
  11. Saw in another post someone was looking for the results. It was our first event and had a blast fishing it. Sorry for the poor cell pic but that's all I got.
  12. Job well done Rick. Tough bite for most, but you guys put it all together and consistantly!
  13. Where on the LOC page does it say salmon only derby? The LOC is a trout and salmon derby isn't it? I had a heated discussion with someone last week about the topic, his "thought" was the LOC is a salmon derby. My thought was it's both. Not to get off the laker/king topic, but what if one of us hooks into a huge brown trout and its heavier than the biggest king? That would be a true trophy, but not qualify for a grand prize? Why not promote the lake for the fine fishery that it is for all species...not just the king... If you want to split a derby up for fairness, why not make a division for the weekend warriors? Seems to me alot of the fish that end up on the boards come from charters....
  14. http://lakeviewmotelandcottage.com/ Puts you in the middle of Wilson state park launch and the fort launch. Fishing should be good at both that time of year. Also a short drive to Olcott if the fishing happens to be better over there. T and R convenience store in the town of Wilson has reasonable/good fast food (pizza, subs etc), they also sell fuel. The motel has a common kitchen area with pots/pans utensils for guest use, so you can bring your own groceries if thats your thing, also have freezer for fish and very boat friendly for parking (lots of room).
  15. I use basically the same thing and had the same problem with the ez steer before making the change. Mine came from gander but cabelas has the same thing here.. http://www.cabelas.com/product/Boating/Boating-Accessories/Boat-Steering%7C/pc/104794380/c/104706180/sc/104602680/Auxiliary-Motor-Connector-Rods/700014.uts?destination=%2Fcatalog%2Fbrowse%2Fboating-boating-accessories-boat-steering%2F_%2FN-1100610%2FNs-CATEGORY_SEQ_104602680%3FWTz_l%3DUnknown%253Bcat104794380%253Bcat104706180&WTz_l=Unknown%3Bcat104794380%3Bcat104706180%3Bcat104602680 works alot better for me.
  16. Did you try it in the water? The probe has to be submerged to send a reading. If you try it at home make sure to put the probe in a bucket of water. Run you wires directly to the battery. I had alot of trouble with mine until I ran direct to battery. Also check your rca connections and the little spring in the probe, make sure it is tight. Make sure you are connected to the correct side of the probe, plastic tab up. Do you have the right clincher/swivel? You can also find someone else with a DR and test your probe on their set up. That would tell you if the probe is functioning. If all else fails, call kell labs 262-534-2202. They have excellent customer service. Jeff
  17. Thanks Tim, Looks like a winner to me. Jeff
  18. Thank you, that's pretty much what I was thinking but wanted some pros and cons. I do have a hatch up front but that would be a pain. Jeff
  19. Thanks guys, I knew I must have missed something there!
  20. O.K. so I'm trying to figure out the differences between sportsmans and conservation licenses and limits for fishing lake ontario. I can't seem to find a specific zone for Lake Ontario. What I did read showed that salmon and trout seasons in zone 16 - 17 start on the 4th Saturday in April? Does that sound right for Lake O? If so, what do you guys do for the Big Fish Friday in the KOTL since it's the day before the season opens? Or am I not looking in the right place or zone? Also, is the outdoors card a yearly thing or do they cover a few seasons? I've been thinking about fishing in Canada the past couple of years and just want to be sure I'm not breaking any laws. Thanks, Jeff
  21. Hi guys, I have a crestliner sabre hardtop and am looking to add big boards to my arsenal. I was wondering the pros and cons of 2 single masts or trees vs a double mast - and the rod holder configurations you would recommend to run either set up. I'm leaning toward the tree style masts with rod holders attached to them but wanted to get some input before pulling the trigger. Thanks, Jeff
