I was there two summers when in the service. I was twenty one, so fishing was a low priority. That said there were guys surf casting everynight. We went once and drank way to much. Caught some small fish using shrimp. Cheap date.
Striper fisherman are one of the craziest bread. I tried it last year. Took my 9 ft gourge rod with 50lb braid. Chucked an 8inch bass popper the tackle shop guy said was hot. I let out half my line and took a hit on my first cast. Thirty minutes later, a guy fishin near me yells that i should get back to shore. I was waist deep in the light surf. He knew i didnt have my first stripper. I was not ready for something with that many teeth. At 2 am that whole experience was a sensory overload. I was just west of the montak lighthouse. Its worth a trip if you ever get the chance. Took me three trys to finally get one.
Ive caught a lot of nice fish with east winds. Its not like fishing at night. Slow things down. Find some kings. Plan a nice 1300 shore lunch. Better than playin with gear. There is plenty of time for that when the snows comin down.
Ive used different kinds and they all are very. Similar in quality. I havnt run into any bad core. Dont know if this helps. To save $$ i like the bulk packs from cabelas.
Try 20lb dacron. Fly line backer. It outlasts braid and mono and is cheap. I wouldnt use 10lb. You cross lines with anyone and they get a new spoon for sure.
They do stand behind them. Had an issue with my probe and he sent me a new one. Its been working great for two years now. He also had it back to me in under five days. Hard to beat.
Good thread, interesting points of view. This is the stuff that makes just riding around in the boat all day fun. Nice 25lber, that makes it fun as well.
Speed wins. Position helps . On a full day it comes down to whos payin attention. We get hours of free entertainment from this. Wouldnt dream of setting an order. Great side affect is the fake pop. It is an art. These are greaat moral and attitude changers and a big part of the total package.
Caught my first in dunkirk harbor in the 70s. I have caught them in every erie trib. From flys at burt (i know lady O) to fredonia. Thats twice the size of the biggest i have seen. I have never seen anyone eat them. I was always told they were garbage bottom feeders. We call lakers sheep trout because they fight like sheepheads. They feel like an old boat filled with water. They are also considered bad luck in bass circles, once you catch one your lure will only catch sheeps. Not a pretty fish. All that being said, I'd mount that sucker.
Two seasons ago, us coast guard had live fire drills out in open water. Those are not the boats that they use for enforcement. It was a large cutter with an m60 mounted upfont. It looked like a newer version of mchales pt 73.
