Two weeks ago the fleas were non existent in the water I fished with 12 lb test. I got burned in the same water Sunday on a couple of majors. I tried to slap off the fleas as they stopped my progress on the first one. In my inexperience I tightened up the drag to force the issue. I didn't back off the drag quick enough after slapping off the fleas. A few violent head shakes and gone. The second fish got off while trying to slap the fleas off. Lesson learned: Go buy a couple of high capacity reels and 40 lb dia. and leader down to 20# flouro.

Kids fishing with me on the big O @ Sandy Creek

That was a treat to watch Gene! Those boys sure had a blast! Great to see the young ones getting out there. -
Seems like everything is fee based because different vendors are doing the work. At least Reserve America is located in New York not like your fishing license. That point of sale machine is connected to somewhere out of state. Not sure about to where, but NJ and a lot of states is connected to a guy making a killing in Tennessee. You would think they would have someone close to home and keep the economy here, but it is cheaper to ship the work out. Sort of like where all the jobs went...OUT! http://www.answers.com/topic/reserveamerica

Not the best picture, but Team Proteus got the job done.

Yes, just like getting your paycheck at the end of the week from a boss who don't know you.... And they should get combat pay for tuffing out some of the conditions both weather wise and otherwise. I don't observe to make money, but would like at least enough to cover any expense I might have to get up there. That would include if I have to pay for sleeping arrangements. The experience gained is certainly worth looking to break even. Just so you know I have yet to run in the black on the money end of it.

Here is the link to the promo I made for my friend Brent Perkins of BP Adventures. He charters out of Oswego. NY. I met Perky last year as I observed for Captain Jimmy Samia and the East Coast Boys all summer. Editing his videos was the least I could do. He allowed me to stay at his camp a couple of times and asked for nothing in return. His friendship and many others is certainly a benefit of being an observer on these boats. Thanks Perky...

Catch and release tactics?
shadster replied to FLO1919's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
http://www.bassintips.com/fizzingbass.html Thanks for sharing. I don't know if that is the condition the Salmonids experience or not. I know torpedoing lakers back into the water gives them a sudden burst of air for the bladder and they scurry back down to the depths. What chance for a King caught on a 500/600 copper and another 50 yards or so of backing? -
Your job is to insure the integrity of the tournament rules. Making it a personal matter should not come into play. These tournaments can bring the best and worst out of people for obvious reasons. There is a lot on the line and some teams handle it a lot better than others. Regardless of what might happen, it is for the Captain and crew to sort out as a team.

Weird electrical problem causes port riggers to quit?
shadster replied to chowder's topic in This Old Boat
I'll second that! I have a pair of Mag 5 HS riggers and when putting them to the same battery they didn't work at all. A ground issue I'm sure. I now run one on its own battery and the other off of the main. What I have is total manual control on the independent batt rigger and the other runs in full auto. I don't have a problem with that setup on my small boat. -
Catch and release tactics?
shadster replied to FLO1919's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
A sad fact of life for these fish. They fight so hard they commit suicide. -
I got checked by the State Police marine patrol near Oswego last Monday for what they called a safety inspection. For whatever reason I think they were looking for more than that. I had failed to replace this year's registration in my wallet so they telephoned to make sure I was legit. Gave me a directive to get visual distress items on the boat and left. They could have been hard for all of that. I think it was my 16 foot boat that interested them out there all by itself on the big lake. I saw them a long way off and they came all that way to check me out. I had a Coast Guard Zodiac slow down and look hard as it passed a bit later on. I waved. I saw those boats and a bigger State Police boat Tuesday. All were on the run to somewhere at different times of the morning. As GAMBLER says, they are just doing their jobs.

question...
shadster replied to rdebadts's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
I think you find those attitudes everywhere in most endeavors. Some people are all about one up man-ship. A condition of our society. Knowing you are not going to catch every fish in the lake or shoot the biggest deer in the woods is knowing why you are there in the first place. -
Good day in Oswego
shadster replied to shadster's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Thanks for all the applause guys! I am still a bit pumped from catching this fish in my boat. It is too bad that the lake is just a tad far to run on a regular basis. The fishery is something special. I'll certainly get up there to try again. I can't thank those Captain's enough who have given me valuable advice on what it takes to catch these fish. From observing I found each have their own way of doing things with a few tricks up their sleeve. What they all have in common is a passion for the art and the willingness to share. For that I am ever so grateful. -

How hard would it be to direct the top finishers for the events to the Live Fish Reports on this website in real time?

Fishing Report Your Name / Boat Name: ============== TRIP OVERVIEW ============== Date(s):6/15 Time on Water:6 hours Weather/Temp: Beautiful Wind Speed/Direction: Waves: 0-1 Surface Temp: 67 Location: LAT/LONG (GPS Cords): =============== FISHING RESULTS =============== Total Hits:10 Total Boated:7 Species Breakdown:5 kings, 1 rainbow, 1 20 lb 6 oz Atlantic Hot Lure: Michigan Stinger Gator Down Speed: ??? Boat Depth: 40 to 90 Lure Depth:Everywhere in between. ==================== SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS n ==================== After observing for the pro/am at Pont Breeze I had a job to do for a test and review of a new product for jet pump motors and fished Oswego. Last Wednesday and Thursday were a wash and I was happy to see the weather turn good the past couple of days. I fished Monday landing two juvenile browns. Was going to head home, but decided to get an early start Tuesday. Started in 40 feet where I caught the browns only to end up staying out of the way of the big boats. There was a crowd east of the nine mile and more boats coming as the morning wore on. The first skippy was caught in 60 feet of water halfway down on a Hi Tech. I worked the water from sixty to eighty on a northwest southwest line quartering the waves. Picked a legal king on the return to where I caught the first. Working that water I picked up 2 more juniors and a rainbow that was FAT but just shy of 21" I then proceeded to run out of gas. Filling the motor tank with gas on board I ran back to eighty feet where I did the trout. It was not long after heading a little deeper toward the port when the Atlantic hit! This fish hammered it and it was off to the races. He took off and ran a good way then jumped out of the water and tail danced a bit. I gained some control with the Big Game 12# test and got him coming my way. I gave it the line whenever it wanted it and slow but sure got it to the boat. Unfortunately, it was not for long. Being in a low boat in such clear water the fish reacted like a deer as we made eye contact and ran like hell!!!! It made a ruckus on top but didn't get on its tail. Once again, I worked the fish to the boat only to get the net hung up on the keeper knob of my Bimini top. The net let lose and fell on the gunnel with a bang. The fish didn't like that and took off again. One more time I worked it to the boat. It was getting as tired as I was nervous. I got it to the front and went to turn it back into the net, but missed. It ended up under the boat and it was all I could do to get it back. I thought sure the rigger wire on the other side was going to play the role of the devil. Finally, it was alongside and in the net. Of all the different fish that I caught in my lifetime this was my Moby Dick. Everything they say of these Atlantic Salmon is true. I can't put to words the excitement of such a battle. I don't know had it got away if I would have turned into Ahab, but I do know I would have cried. Just as I did after squeezing it into my live well. All the boats were gone. The Jet Wing worked like a charm as I trolled back to Wright's catching another skipper on the way and losing 1 more.
