Top producing set-ups for the Fingerlakes
lil' troller replied to HPORT's topic in Finger Lakes Discussion
Everything FLXtroutman said, plus i would add some cowbell set ups to the list, the larger "beer cans" or ding-a-ling aluminum blade cowbells work good in green, with a green peanut . You can't go wrong with the suttons you mentioned earlier also. the 88's are good in the spring because they run really slow, and the 44's work well all season. Although sometimes its hard to run other rigs that work at the same speed. Alpena diamonds are a good spoon if you can find them, i believe they stopped making them though. Green is a good color 90% of the time, but purple, blue, white, and black are a good go to colors. a good selection of stick baits like thundersticks, or rapalas will help you in the spring and fall. -
Fished most of the day today. The old man just got his boat (20' Trophy) in the water for the first time this week, this was our second venture out on cayuga. For some reason he wanted to take that out insead of my little boat . We boated 9 fish, mostly lakers, 3 bows. Sutton 44's were working well 80-90 ft down over 250-350 fow. Down speed 1.7-2.2. A few good hits on a chrome and red pro troll w/ purple fly behind a dipsy 250' back on # 2 setting. The fish seem to be a little more scattered than a few weeks ago. The rainbows came off a 44 slider. down temp at 80ft was 47-50. T-falls to the boyscout camp was the most productive. We had one double of 5lb lakers, that was fun. All in all a slow but steady day.

how were the weeds and fleas? Lots of helpful info there, thanks for posting.
-
Glad to hear you got into them. Any size to the lakers?
-
I agree with chowder, suspended lakers over deep water is probably the most productive right now, i would start around 70' down over 250-300 and go from there. Green is almost always a hot color on cayuga, glow green in the early morning. 2 weeks ago the laker bite was great. I launched at Meyers and trolled north and had fish all day.

I had a blast on the lake today. launched from Meyers. I was on the water before sunrise and caught 2 small lakers and one around 5 lbs. Two came on a green glow alpena diamond, and the other on a sutton 44. After the sun came up nothing, i tried everything. Then I came across a blue and green R&R spoon, dropped it down to 70' over 300 and that made for steady action. Caught 6 more lakers all around 5# and one of them made 8#. One of the best days I have had out there by myself, and all quality fish. The bite slowed down around 2. This is a day i will remember for a long time.

Englishmen mourning loss of 64 lbs carp!
lil' troller replied to Pike Hunter's topic in Fishing Videos
were all gonna miss that guy . That is too funny. Did he say there may be a witch hunt? Nuts could have been impropperly prepped bait??? Is that how those Brits fish for carp? They drop a couple nuts in the water and wait for a carp to suck them up Maybe that's why they are going to miss him so much -
i was out there too. I was off the water by ten, but caught and releases two small lakers (20-22") they came @70 and 90ft down over 250. It was a little choppy for my little boat. Spent to much time clearing weeds, but theres no such thing as a bad day fishing.

nice lakers!

that fish was a hog, congrats!

Hey RR, what was your weight for last years LOU-ALL. I'm trying to get an idea of how picky to be in the morning. Thanks
-
It looks like I will probably be late on Sat. I may have to work until 7, but should be able to get on the water by 7:30. Hopefully thats ok. If not let me know. I can check in on the radio if you need a head count before the weigh in. thanks

hey cdgn troller congrats on your rainbow. I can't believe there weren't more rainbows caught. I'm not complaining though. I have to tip my hat to you laker guys. I have considered myself decent at catching lakers, but i hear radio chatter of boating 20 or more fish in a day. Thats unreal. I usually fish alone, but if I catch 5-6 lakers in a 12 hour troll i consider that a good day. I have a lot to learn. Congrats to everyone that fished the tourny. The weeds and fleas sucked, but a day on the lake is never bad. Hopefully I can show the same amount of luck oops! I mean skill next weekend. I look forward to meeting you guys, and don't run over the little blue and white boat out there .

How did everyone make out? I had a rough first day, motor wouldn't start. I had a lot of water in the gas, brought it home got it taken care of and by that time the weather had turned. We got out today@ 2:30 a.m. and started a night troll north. Day broke before we hit AES, around 8:00a.m caught a nice rainbow that placed second (6.18 lbs). Made my day, we caught a couple lakers and a LL but nothing with size. heres the rainbow.

Hey thats trolling, lol! Take him out on a few more slow days and he will love the good ones. Maybe i've had too many slow days . Good you got him out there, I hope he gets a slammer next time!

Great video. My dad and I still fish a lot. I remember a lot from growing up fishing. One that sticks out right now is the day i started taking fish off the hook. We were at a small pond we fished a lot, and we were catching blue gills like crazy. One of those days where you have a fish as soon as the worm hits the water. i remember him trying to rig his pole as i brought him sunny after sunny. He finaly got pissed and said that's it! lol. I was probably 4 at the time, it's funny to look back at. My dad worked 2nd shift most of my younger years, so the only time i really saw him was fishing on the weekends. I used to drive the boat when we were trolling, probably started around 3years old. I would drive while he would set up the downriggers. My dad and i were talking the other day, he said that by the time i was 5 he would rather have me driving the boat than his buddies. I remember watching that old hummingbird fishfinder with 1/4" blocks on the display. I think it only went down to 200'. I would drive by that and look out for upcomming points and creeks. Good times. He tells me of a day there was a 3' chop on one of the fingerlakes (i can't remember) he would get everything set going into the wind. We had 4 poles down, and he says we would turn downwind and get atleast a double each pass. I guess a few times we had all 4 poles "pop". He gave away his boat to a guy he worked with when i was 12 or so. I hated to see the boat go, but that guy had cancer and it was good that he got to enjoy it. I just got back into trolling the last few years, and the lakes are totally different from 15 years ago. I fish because i have always fished, it's what i do and it's who i am. theres no place i would rather be than in a boat or on the ice. the tug of a fish on the other side of my line always brings a smile to my face. I still get excited like i did when i was 2-3 catching carp out of the river. It never gets old.

nice healthy bow, good job!

I'll be out of meyers on cayuga! Good luck!

i did the same troll yesterday Justin. I launched from myers, up to AES(miliken)over to the west side down to taughannock. I got 4 lakers, but all were small. The largest was about 22", they were all released. I had a good hit in front of AES, had the line screaming off the reel off a dipsey with a dodger/spoon. I got it out of the rod holder and it was gone. 3 out of 4 lakers were on sutton 88's and one on a black/purple southport slammer. I couldn't seem to find the big ones.

Great Brown!

That's a good day of fishing. I took a guy i work with out for his first time trolling and we had a day like that. We couldn't keep rods in the water. I kept telling him it's not usually like this. Days like that make all those slow days worth while. I hope you get to go back out and slam them again!

i have Roemer releases on my riggers, and i run them about three feet up from the ball. I have tried adjusting the tension tighter, but then i ended up dragging smaller fish without knowing it. I don't think they are false releases because a lot of times it's not right on bottom, and the speed hasn't changed. I don't have a probe, so maybe it's some currents messing with me. I do feel headshake on a few i lose, but most of the time i can land them if they are there. My question is more about releases with nothing on there. I do have some cannon stacker releases, but i don't think its a release problem. I'm running the lure about 24"-30" back from the cowbells now, and thats mainly beacuse i fish from a small boat usually by myself and any longer of a leader makes it hard to net. Thanks!
-
I get a lot of releases on cowbells, but i have a hard time hooking up on them. I was wondering if the fish are hitting the cowbells instead of the spoon, or peanut. If that is that case is it the distance back from the cowbells, or the size of the lure i need to work on? Maybe it's just the drag from the cowbells keeping me from getting a good hookset. Any ideas? thanks!

I don't have all the results, but the 10# laker taken the first day won it. 2nd&3rd place lakers were both in 8#'s and change (I believe). We fished both days, but had a wheel bearing go bad on my trailer. We were working on that when they did the awards. Fishing was slow for us, lost more spoons than anything. Lost about a 6# laker at the back of the boat, and had a lot of releases but couldn't get hooked up. How did you do?
