I'm a short rod guy too. I have 8' talora wire diver rods and 7' talora one piece planner board rods for the riggers. I think what's important for fighting kings on any rod is that they have some back bone. there's nothing worse than trying to muscle in a big fish on a noodly rod.

during tournaments I'm ridiculous. I work from one side of the boat to the other cleaning lines. then I start over again. you can't catch fish when your lines are messed up and the fish love those spots where the currents meet and the weeds build up. If we are fishing clean water you don't have to check that much. normally you'll get a good feel of how the water looks around you. don't leave the lines down too long

I've heard dismal reports about the bar this year. that would normally be my go to. but Dalhousie has been so hot in tight there has been no need to make the run. good luck to ya

I think it shows that set up on the J plug package. Out west they don't run anything with out a flasher. it'll work

some days are tough though. we went 5 for 14 during KOTL amateur tourney this year. Not much hooked up that day.

Bigger hooks in the fall. we up the size of our cut bait hooks to 1/0 or even 2/0 gamakatzu trebles in the fall. the #2 owners that come on the Atomic flies are nice hooks most of the year but miss a lot of hits in the fall. Great flies, all I use but I definitely noticed a bad hook up percentage on them this fall, where as 80% of the kings hooked up on the cutbait rigs hooked up well.

I caught dark fish in 50fow out front of Port Weller the first week of August this year and I've caught them in 38fow out front of Port Dalhousie as late as October 18. Early bite is usually best but that's not to say they won't turn on at any time of day. All you can do is go give it a try.

I feel ya being stuck to a fish Steelydan. I was attached by the fore arm to a 6Lbs Northern Pike up on the Bay of Quinte. We where connected by a Husky Jerk. Talk about a scary moment.

Funny you say that. We say the same thing when the fish aren't at the bar they must be in American waters. I guess the grass is always greener on the other side "EH". Fish location changes all the time some days you'll bang em at the Bar, Some days Weller is hot while others it's all the way to Port Dalhousie or Jordan. good luck

Meat was very good. especially later in the year. This was the first season I ever gave it a fair shot and what I discovered was when I ran it very deep it would catch bigger fish than spoons and flies. it seemed to avoid the dinks. I had great days with meat even on days that others struggled with the regular stuff. Mind you it could be my 1000 year old super secret brining recipe. Hey guys, need a little help here. I bought 2 new CV55 for copper rigs. As per someones suggestion I used my roto tool and widened the level wind to allow the knot to pass by more freely. It seemed to work well but it is definately rough compared to the factory finish. I'm afraid it is going to cause havoc on the leader or backing. What have some of you done to smooth out the finish. Man I'm glad I only did it to one. Am I able to buy wider guides from Okuma to fit this reel?

Just an observation as I don't fish that area. however king fishing you have to go faster. usually this time of year I'll start my day with the boat at 2.5 and do some turns to see what kind of mood the fish are in and most of the time I find that the fish will like it a little faster. assuming you have a sub troll or depth raider a down speed of about 2.1-2.4 is a good place to start. good luck Matt

I can vouch for that. I've been having great success on these spoons for the last couple of years. tops are Mixed veggies and NBK. Can't wait to try some of these new UV ones.

side note. I hate snubbers, I loose more fish with snubbers than with out. just use mono as opposed to flouro and there should be enough stretch there.

The first thing I do even before I get the rod out of the holder is back the drag off so that the king can run free. I've found landing percentages went up huge when I started doing this. Let the king do it's initial run to tire out, the last thing you want is a green mature king beside the boat tangling all your other lines. I believe that we sometimes pull a lightly grabbed hook out of the fishes mouth when we are fumbling to get the rod out of the holder so get some good quick release holders such as salties or Scotty Orcas, the backed off drag should help this too. Some guys keep the drag super loose but put the wire in a planer board release to get a good hookset, I have not found that it helps me but may help you. Everyone has there own style that works for them. try some of these tricks and let us know how it works out. good luck Matt

I'm new to the cut bait fishing but really going to give it a chance this year. (I say that every year) but this time I mean it. lol. I'm curious as to what your favorite bait heads are for SALMON? I'm looking for any tips you might offer to help me get started as well. Thanks Matt
