Cannon Mag10 HS
High Bidder replied to High Bidder's topic in Classifieds - Buy, Sell, Trade or Rent
Ray, There isn't a swivel base included. I needed it because I also bought a Mag 5 ST which doesn't include a swivel base. Thank you -
Cannon Mag10 HS
High Bidder replied to High Bidder's topic in Classifieds - Buy, Sell, Trade or Rent
Sorry, My boat name is "High Bidder". Because when I first got hooked on salmon fishing I bought most of my equipment on Ebay. I will remove the ad as soon as I find out how to do it, so I don't further offend anyone. I will try to come up with a new name for my boat also. Sorry again. -
Cannon Mag 10 HS. This unit is 4 years old. I used it for two weekends and two weeks per year. I am selling it because Cannon sent me a new Mag 10STX in exchange for my failed Intellitroll. It comes with the mounting base and battery side wiring harness. I installed 300 ft.of new cable on it the last week I used it. I am asking $325.00 plus shipping cost. I am in central PA. High Bidder

Would there be any advantage to upgrading my Lowrance GPS puck to a 4000 series? I have a 7500c Globalmap which also runs my Simrad AP24. It works OK but it does have a variation to the actual course of about 50 to 100 ft. I notice this when going thru the channel it shows me going on land to the left side. I know it would take an adapter cable but it should connect with the existing unit. On the newer units you can adjust for the variation but I am not ready to upgrade the whole system since this year I have to buy a Fish Hawk. Thanks High Bidder

Non coated downrigger cable for use with your speed/temp
High Bidder replied to cuseroller's topic in Tackle and Techniques
I got it to use on my Cannon Intellitroll. The Intellitroll failed shortly thereafter. So I can't give an opinion on the cables function but it didn't seem to change the blowback as compared to the standard coated cable. It is a better idea than the coated cable because it should last longer. Since it is a twisted cable and not braided it is a little more difficult to terminate. High Bidder -
I had 13" bias tires on my trailer which hauled a 21 ft Striper. I averaged 1 tire failure per 2 trips.(1200 miles). I replaced them with 14" radials and haven't had a failure yet.(4800 miles) I did have to make new fenders to accomodate the bigger tires but it trailers much better. High Bidder

I know how you guys feel. I felt the same for years in that I had to surrender my right to carry a handgun everytime I went to NY. I felt like a 2nd class citizen. Here in PA we are also controlled by the city voter majority. Rural people are tolerated only because their taxes support the cities social programs. I don't know where PA is headed in this deal but I'm sure it will be for the worse. High Bidder

After replacing my Cannon Mag 10HS riggers with Cannon STX downriggers my "short" crew members(wife and son) complained about the increased height of the rod holder. It is about 6 inches higher. And I have to admit it does make getting the rod out a bit more difficult. The solution I found was using 2 dual action arms before the rod tube. This lowers the tube about 4 inches. It does limit me to only one rod holder on the left side of the rigger which is not a problem. I guess I'll find out this spring if using 2 dual arms will handle the stress of the rod pulling on the holder tube. If anyone else has a better solution I would be interested to hear it. Thnak you High Bidder

One thing to consider with getting a FF only is how can the system be upgraded. I made the mistake of buying a 778c Humminbird which doesn't have the SD card slot. I had to buy a computer cable adapter and a battery pack kit to install upgrades. I could have saved money buying the 788c GPS and FF unit which has the SD slot. It also would have been a lot easier to do the upgrades. I don't know about other brands. High Bidder

Probably the only results are from the test units. The new model is only for sale for a few weeks now and only from the Fish Hawk Store. Most dealers are only going to get the new model in the coming weeks. I had a Intellitroll unit which had the depth. But with the extra $150 cost of the new X4D I am wondering if it is really that important. Due to more blow back on the probe rigger you still have to guess where to set your other riggers anyway using the cable counters. The only real purpose of knowing the depth is when I am fishing near structure, such as the Wall in the Trench, or when the thermocline is near the bottom and don't want to catch my probe on the bottom. I'll decide in the next month or so which unit I will purchase. High Bidder

I got very little water in the bilge. Most of it probably comes from washing the floor after landing a fish. Thre is never enough water in the bilge to activate the bilge pump even after fishing for a week. So the leak wasn't big, just big enough to ruin the gimbal bearing. Thanks for the advice. Last year I replaced the bellows on my OMC cobra. When I first bought a boat with an I/O I was worried about the bellows leaking and the boat sinking. So after 3 years I figured that I should change it. Apparently I did it wrong because it leaked and ruined my gimbal bearing. I replaced the gimbal bearing and u-joints and now I am ready to install the new bellows. Should a special sealer be used? My manual isn't very detailed for the installation. Thanks High Bidder

The Mag 10 STX came last Saturday. I mounted the new base and rigged it to test it. Now all I have to do is buy a new Fish Hawk, replace the bellows, gimbal bearing and seal and new u-joints and I'll be set for next season. Apparently my bellows leaked and compromised the bearing and u-joints. High Bidder

I'm glad it worked out for you. I'm patiently waiting for my Mag 10 STX to arrive. High Bidder

Henderson's Trench 9/1/12
High Bidder replied to Chas0218's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Looks like a natural salmon. Half the ones we caught in the Trench were naturals in the past two weeks. High Bidder -
My faith in Cannon is renewed. After contacting them they said they can't fix or replace the Intellitrol but they will send me a value comparable item. I chose the Mag 10 STX downrigger. If I sell my mag 10HS I will have part of the cost to buy a Fish Hawk. High Bidder

You are right, Capt. Spike, I am definitely not alone. I should have search the site first for other people who have problems with the Intellitrol. The one post sounds exactly like my brother-in-laws unit which shows 95 degrees all the time. Tomorrow I'll be contacting Cannon about resolving this issue. A Fish Hawk is on my wish list for next year. Thanks High Bidder

After 80 hrs of use my IntelliTrol has failed. My brother-in-law's unit failed after 60 hrs of use. What a piece of junk. It is the probe because we tried switching the probes between boats and neither one works. Johnson Outdoors did not use their best research and development on this product. I would like to know if anyone else has this unit and if it works or has failed. Thank you High Bidder

Just came home after 12 days at the Trench. It is the first time everyone that fished with me actually got tired of reeling in salmon. We caught fish every day. Even with having to take a morning off to install an new gimbal bearing we still managed to catch our limit in the afternoon and evening. (my limit is 6 fish). I had to pack up and leave a day and a half early because we can eat only so much salmon. It was a year that will be talked about for a long time. Great weather, great fishing and great friends. I also was amazed at the no. of naturals we caught. About 50%. The only downside was the low water at the dock. What a year. High Bidder

8/4 Shipping Lanes
High Bidder replied to Mattk's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
I hope they move into the Trench in two weeks. I'll be there for my two week fishing vacation. It's a long haul to the shipping lanes if the water is rough but if that's where the fish are that's where I'll be. Looking forward to more reports from Henderson. High Bidder -
I guess from changing the lines at the actuator I got air in at the beginning of the line. It's all bled now and the brakes work great. There was constant problems with the drum brakes it had on it before and they were only two years old. I'm hoping the disc brakes don't freeze up during the winter storage like the wheel cylinders sometimes did. I also discovered that not all trailer wiring on trucks have a backup light wire to them to activate the reverse solenoid on the actuator. My brother-in-law's 97 Ford truck has the reverse wire but my 99 Ford does not. I guess if I want to use his boat now I'll have to rewire my truck. Thanks for the imput on fixing this issue. High Bidder

Nitro, I used the comealong method and it worked great. The first time I bled the calipers I started at the fartherest. The next few times I started at the closest. It took a lot of fluid to finally get the brakes to work. Kodiak calipers have bleeders on both sides of the unit so you can always open the top one. I'll bleed them one more time after I take it for a trip around the block. Thanks High Bidder

I just installed disc brakes on a buddy's trailer and I can't seem to get enough pressure to activate the calipers. I installed a new disc brake type actuator with a reversing solenoid. It is a Tie Down model and Kodiak brakes. There are no leaks anywhere and the reversing solenoid is functioning properly (no bypass when not activated)and it has me baffled. Is there a special procedure to bleed the actuator and system? Or could it be just a defective actuator? High Bidder

Fishing Report Your Name / Boat Name:High Bidder ============== TRIP OVERVIEW ============== Date(s):6/29-7/1 Time on Water:Lots Weather/Temp: Wind Speed/Direction: Waves: Surface Temp: Location:Mexico Bay LAT/LONG (GPS Cords): =============== FISHING RESULTS =============== Total Hits: 10 Total Boated:9 Species Breakdown:8 kings, 1 brown Hot Lure: Trolling Speed: Down Speed: Boat Depth: 220 Lure Depth: 130 ==================== SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS I went out on Friday AM and started in 165 FOW in front of plant. It was a little rough and by 11 it was getting too rough for my wife. I did manage to land a small king and a keeper king. Friday afternoon was definitely too rough for me as the wind really picked up. Saturday morning my son was along and we only got 1 king. Saturday evening we ran the riggers a little deeper and our luck greatly improved. We landed 3 kings in 4 hours which is real good for us. Since I only fished at Mexico a few times, on Sunday we headed to the area where there were the most boats in front of the plant in 220 FOW. We set our riggers at 160 ft. of cable( about 130 ft. depth and 48 degrees) and our copper at 450 ft. and got 4 kings by 10 o'clock when it was time for us to pack up and head home. The last king hooked up as we started to pull our riggers. Most of the kings we caught were 15-18 lbs but we got our biggest king which was 21 lbs on the copper with a green dolphin spoon. Most of the kings were caught on Atommik hammer flies. We used various flashers . Most were green but the Big Shooter coho special did well for us also. It was amazing that the fleas were terrible on Friday but by Saturday there were hardly any at all. I stayed at Catfish Creek and met a lot of nice people. I thought I would finally post a report even though I only get to fish about 3 weekends and the last two weeks of August. Good Fishing High Bidder

I had the same problem with my radio. It turned out to be a poor ground(corrosion). Cleaned all connections and it worked great. I couldn't see the corrosion until I removed the ground wire from my terminal block. High Bidder
